     I HATE EXERCISE!

You've no doubt heard about the positive effects that exercise can have on your overall health and blood sugar control if you are diabetic. Yet, if you're like most people with diabetes, you're still not getting enough activity in your life.It can be difficult to make the leap from knowing to doing.

The first step is to figure out what's getting in the way of your get-up-and-go. Once you understand what's stopping you, perhaps you'll know how to start moving forward.

What one thing frustrates you the most about exercising?

1. I HATE exercise!

2. I DON'T have time to exercise!

3. IT  Doesn't make any  difference!

4. I AM NOT motivated!

5. I get BORED and give up!

People hate exercising because its not fun.  Find some activity to do that you will enjoy.  Try gardening, or find a walking group so you are with other people when you are walking.  I found boxing to be my sport of choice.  I started over 5 years ago, and discovered it to be a great way to get out my frustrations and compete with myself.  Punching the bags is a great release for me and a wonderful activity to lose weight.

People I have worked with started belly  dancing classes (even when they thought they were to fat) and loved the way they felt connecting to their bodies again.  Step outside the box when you think about getting active.

You don't need to go to the gym to exercise. Think about what kinds of activities you liked as a child.  Did you jump rope, play volley ball or soccer.  Think outside the box.  Once you find something you enjoy, its much easier to get motivated and find the time for yourself to do it.  Remember, if its boring, the chances of you continuing are slim.

That's why I started Walking Soles.  To help people get started to move again.  My  Walking Soles groups have gone on to  walk in races, marathons and triathlons!  And it all started with them walking with my groups.

I designed the Walking Soles program to complement weekly one-on-one therapy sessions. The program is ideally suited to those who feel intimidated by clinical therapy. Here, you'll give up the therapist's couch in favor of a lawn chair and green grass. In this setting, many people relax in ways they couldn't in the office, allowing for important work that gets right to the source of the feelings underlying emotional eating and unhealthy lifestyle choices.

The Walking Soles group gathers each week in the lovely outdoor setting of Eisenhower Park on Long Island to meet with other women committed to long-term weight loss.

Walking Soles is a mutual support group, where, under my guidance as an obesity expert. I have created a loving and supportive environment for talking about our weight issues free of shame and self-loathing.

Each group meets for 90 minutes. The session begins by everyone pairing off with a "walking buddy", and the assignment of a discussion topic given by me. Then you and your buddy will take an easy, pleasant walk or a brisk walk (depending on what level you are at) around the park for 30 minutes or so, while discussing the topic for the day.

After the walk, we all meet back at Field 1 for a seated group session where we talk about the emotional issues around our weight, share tips on adopting a healthy lifestyle, and work on the deeper issues that keep us from losing weight.  Each week you will receive handouts and motivational materials.

Sessions are held on Saturday mornings and run for 4 weeks at a time.  There are 3 sessions planed for the summer.
Fees are as follows:

4 weeks $120
8 weeks $240
