Beer-Poached Grilled Sausages

By: Whole Foods

Difficulty: Easy

This fun recipe is so simple and super tasty, perfect for a relaxing summer day by the pool or the beach. Try marinating the sausages in different beers to mix it up a little.

Ingredients

-3 lbs chicken sausages, such as Italian or Cilantro

-3 cups of beer

-6 garlic cloves, finely minced

-1 onion, thinly sliced

-1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Directions:

Prick each sausage a half-dozen times with a fork or thin kabob skewer.

Marinate sausages in beer and garlic for about an hour in the refrigerator.

Arrange onion slices on the bottom of a sauté pan just large enough to hold all sausages.

Place sausages on top and add leftover marinade to cover.

Place the pan over medium heat and gradually bring liquid to a simmer.

Poach sausages until half-cooked, 4 to 5 minutes.

Transfer sausages to a rack on a baking sheet to drain or drain in a colander.

Meanwhile, set up the grill for direct grilling and preheat to medium-high.

Oil the grill grate.

Lightly brush sausages on all sides with oil and place on the hot grate.

Grill until casings are crisp and nicely browned and sausages are cooked through, 4 to 6 minutes per side.

Insert a thin metal skewer into the center of a sausage to check for doneness: It should come out hot to the touch.

Transfer sausages to a platter and let rest for 3 minutes. Serve on toasted buns with condiments of your choice.

Pumpkin, Pumpkin, Pumpkin...I can hear the echoes of that chant from years past. Yes, it is finally here! The fall seasonal beers are hitting the shelves as I write this intro. I know, I know...it is August 3rd. It feels like the height of the summer here in South Florida....so why are we talking about Fall Seasonal beers, Pumpkin beers and Oktoberfest beers. Well, it is because it takes time for us to get these beers to you. We have been planning these roll outs since January when we put the initial preorders in for most of them. We've had to check with our retailers, get their orders, make sure we ordered enough, make sure the breweries can make enough and endless other things to get to this very moment when we can say...the beer is here and you can go out and buy some at your local bar or retailer.

But before we get too far ahead of ourselves though, there are lots of them that are still going to be hitting retailers throughout the month. Yes...Shipyard Pumpkinhead, Smashed Pumpkin, Left Hand Oktoberfest, Victory Fest and a few others are already out there but there are many more to come. Ayinger Oktoberfest, Southern Tier Pumpking, Dogfish Pumpkin, Cisco Pumple Drumkin and many many others are still getting brewed or on trucks headed our way.

And don't forget about those Summer beers....I mean...it is still Summer here. Penn Summer Berry Weisse is probably the best fruit beer I have had in sometime. Victory Summer Love is a perfect crisp clean wheat beer. Narragansett Summer is no doubt one of the better tasting light beers out there bar none. So be sure to pickup a few more of these before their time runs out. We still have about another 3 months of weather left before it actually feels like fall here!

Cheers,

Adam Fine

DUVEL

Duvel Single - Enjoy the classic Belgian Strong Ale, now brewed for draft! This "single-fermented" ale contains all the typical Duvel flavors and aromas. Duvel Single reveals true craftsmanship, uses only the finest ingredients-including noble hops-and has superb drinkability. 6.8% ABV (draft only).

Magic Hat Logo
MAGIC HAT BREWING COMPANY

Burn Pile Smoked Porter - Six malts, ranging in roast from dark to darker, are used in its brewing, offering an aroma of caramel and chocolate with a subtle, complimentary smokiness. Burn Pile is brewed with the goal of gathering kindred spirits seeking warmth, flavor and a small-batch craft beer. 7.5% ABV (bottle and draft).

MacTarnahan's Brewing Company

Full Bloom Craft Lager - With beginnings reminiscent of a Bohemian pilsner, this bountiful craft lager is a refreshing hoppy Northwest experience. (bottle only).

Goose Bump Imperial Stout - This deliciously dark imperial stout is brewed with roasted and chocolate malt, coffee beans, and bold hop flavor with percolate into a complex blend of fearsome intensity. 9% ABV (bottle only).

STONE BREWING COMPANY

Stone Smoked Porter w/ Vanilla Bean - This ale was the brainchild of Small Batch Brewer Laura Ulrich, who had a stroke of genius after trying Stone Smoked Porter poured over a couple scoops of vanilla ice cream. The complex flavor of Madagascar vanilla beans melds perfectly with the chocolatey, malty, coffee-like character of the beer, making it almost like a liquid dessert, but without an overbearing sweetness. 5.9% ABV (bottle only).

Stone Smoked Porter w/ Chipotle Peppers - This porter is a thing of spicy glory, with the just-right heat of smoked jalapeños (aka chipotles) that combines beautifully with the beer's peat-smoked malt and roasty character. The idea came about in 2006 when Merchandise Manager Chris Carroll suggested Stone make a special "South of the Border Stone Smoked Porter" for Cinco de Mayo that year. One sip, and you will be hooked! 5.9% ABV (bottle only).

Stone Ruination Tenth Anniversary IPA - This IPA was created as a homage to the almighty hop. They cranked up the ABV and used twice as much hops-a whopping 5 pounds per barrel, including a pound each of Citra and Centennial in the dry hop. The results are glorious. The only more bitter than those who don't get any...will be those who do. 10.8% ABV (bottle only).

BREWERY OMMEGANG

Seduction - A Belgian love affair that is loving brewed with six dark malts. Chocolatier Callebut provides the chocolate, while Liefmans brings the cherries. This international romance is consummated with a full body, alluring aromas and flavors of Belgian chocolate and tart cherries. Beautiful, rich, smooth, roasty and malty throughout. 6.8% ABV (bottle and draft).

TERRAPIN BEER COMPANY

Reunion - This complex, dark ale is brewed with cocoa nibs, vanilla, and chili peppers. The flavor begins with complex malt overtones and quickly gives way to the chocolate, cinnamon, and vanilla. Inspired by rich mugs of Mexican hot chocolate this is going to be especially good with BBQ, Mole, and Churro. 7.6% ABV (bottle and draft).

Samurai Krunkles - Taking the Orient and the rest of the world by storm, Krunkles returns! In this edition of the bearded IPA brewer's saga, "Samurai Krunkles", as he was once known in the Far East, pulls out all the hops from his katana's sheath to make this Asian flared brew. While traveling around the Pacific in a souped up rickshaw pulled by his trusty side kick Cato, Krunkles uncovered unique brewing ingredients such as jasmine rice, jasmine green tea and the finest ginger the Orient had to offer for this Samurai master's ale. 7.1% ABV (bottle and draft).

Other returning favorites hitting the shelves:
Look out for returning hits such as: Shipyard Pumpkinhead (bottle and draft), Left Hand Oktorberfest (bottle and draft), Magic Hat Hex (bottle only), Magic Hat Hi.P.A. (bottle only), and Dogfish Head Tweason'al (bottle and draft).

When you order a couple of beers at your neighborhood bar, you're not just having a drink, you're taking part in a grand old tradition stretching back to the birth of our nation and beyond.

When the first British colonists began to wash up on our shores, the very first thing they built was usually a tavern.

"It sounds absurd, doesn't it?" author Christine Sismondo tells weekends on All Things Considered host Guy Raz. "But it kind of served as the initial infrastructure while everyone was waiting for everything to be built properly, and it just wound up being all things to all people."

Sismondo is the author of the new book, America Walks Into a Bar: A Spirited History of Taverns and Saloons, Speakeasies and Grog Shops. She says she was inspired to write it after traveling through America and realizing how many important events in the country's history had their roots in bars and taverns.

AMONG THE CRAFT-BEER COGNOSCENTI, pilsner has long been considered a dirty word, sullied by its very popularity, synonymous with lowest-common-denominator, industrialized swill. Big, bold flavors were more distinguishing for the fledgling craft-brew industry than subtlety and snap. But in the last few years, the tide has begun to turn, and some craft breweries are visiting the style for the first time.

Pilsners were born to be crowd-pleasers, and that's the problem. What is now the most popular style of beer in the world was invented in 1842 by a cantankerous German brewer named Josef Groll, hired by the concerned citizens of Plzen to do something about that Bohemian town's shoddy beer (four years earlier, a mob dumped barrels of it at the steps of city hall). Groll applied lagering, a technique of aging beer cold that was popular in his homeland, to local ingredients: peppery Saaz hops; delicate Moravian barley; soft, limestone-filtered water. What he made was brilliant gold, kissed with honey and the herbal spice of summer grass. It could only come from Plzen, and it was so named.

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Want a 170-year-old beer?

Finnish researchers say they may be able to recreate beer from the 1840s after finding living bacteria in beer from a shipwreck near Aland islands.

The 2010 discovery of the ship, believed to have sunk in the 1840s, also included the world's oldest champagne considered drinkable which has since been auctioned off.

Researchers analyzed two bottles of beer, which they admitted "had not stood the test of time well" but retained a pale golden color and could originally have had hints of rose, almond and cloves.
