Featured Beer Pairing

Porters and BBQ

Next time you fire up your backyard grill or head out for some great BBQ, reach for a porter after that first bite. Porters get their darker color from roasting the malts longer, so porters have that great roasty flavor with a kiss of smoke. Perfect for anything that  you pull off a grill. Try a Stone Smoker Porter or a Highland Oatmeal Porter.

Craft Beer Can Chicken

By: craftbeerchef.com

Difficulty: Easy

One of our all time summer favorites is beer can chicken. Experiment with different craft beer cans for different flavors. Try Oskar Blues Gubna Imperial IPA for a hoppy overload or even Breckenridge Avalanche Ale for a sweet treat.

Ingredients

-1 whole young chicken
-Salt & Pepper
-Old Bay Seasoning
-1 large potato
-1 can of craft beer

Clear out all internal packaging from the middle of the chicken.

Add salt and pepper to the entire chicken, internally and externally.

Add Old Bay Seasoning to the outside of the chicken giving it a light orange tint.

Open the entire top portion of the craft beer. Not only the drinking tab, but the entire top of the can should be removed.

Add 1 tsp of Old Bay directly into the beer.

Place the chicken on top of the beer can.

On the top side of the chicken, add 1 un-pealed potato.

This will allow the beer to flavor the meat and not escape through the top.

Place the craft beer and chicken on the grill.

Maintain temperature of 350 degrees for appx 2 hours.

Continually check the chicken to be sure the beer is not overflowing on the grill.

Cut the chicken down the middle to be sure all of the meat is fully cooked.

Remove from the grill and remove from the craft beer can.

Enjoy.

Pair with your choice of canned craft beer.

High ABV beers are certainly all the rage these days. (ABV = Alcohol By Volume for you non home brewer folks out there). The higher the better in some circles. Certainly these beers create all the buzz when they come out  But how many monster beers can you drink at one sitting without falling on your face? I've never been consumed by what the percentage of a particular beer is except when I am driving and have to be careful what I am imbibing. I've always sought out flavor and character over effect.

That is not to say I haven't drank a few of these alcohol bombs in my time. I do have my favorites for those moments (mostly when there is no driving to be done) that I like to ponder my existence.  But beer to me is a social medium and I tend to want to share these with friends so they can enjoy the experience them as well. And I always seem to have my hand on a lower ABV choice.

Sessionable beers, as some call them, are also pushing the bounds of high alcohol these days. Sessionables used to be in the 3.5 - 5.5% range. Now days you'll be lucky to find a craft beer less than 6%.  I guess once your liver adjusts to the 8% and 10%...6 % is a good reprieve for a moment or two. But I always prefer these "lower" ABV beers at the end of the day. It just seems a more natural way to enjoy a good beer...one pint at a time.

So when you are done twittering about your most recent choice of 15% Russian Imperial Stout that you just acquired in trade for a 18% Barleywine... call up a few friends, crack a few low ABV session beers, and enjoy the real social media called life.

Cheers,

New Arrivals:

BRASSERIE D'ACHOUFFE

La Chouffe - The legend of the gnomes (of Chouffes) who once brewed in this small area in France, inspired this lovely golden ale. Brewed with spices and bottle-conditioned, La Chouffe pours orange-yellow with a lush head. Fruit, hops, and citrus aromas and tastes abound, with a spicy finish. 8% ABV (bottle and keg).

McChouffe - This strong brown ale is dark, earthy-hued and spicy. It is brewed with Pilsner malts and English Golding and Saaz hops. The appearance is deep brown and the aroma is fruity and zesty. This is a full-bodied beer with hints of fruit, spice, plums and raisins. It has a complex and lingering fnish with a lush and smooth mouth feel. 8% ABV (bottle and keg).

Houblon Chouffe - In his travels around the globe, the little Chouffe wandered through beautiful hop fields. The overwhelming aromas such as Tomahawk, Amarillo and Saaz mesmerized him. Back home he brewed his favorite ale, a Belgian Tripel with these new found hops. It's a great quaffing beer. 9% ABV (bottle and keg).

BREWERY OMMEGANG

Abby Ale - This abbey ale is directly influences by the patience and wisdom of the Trappists, who ever seek divine union. Dark, ruby in color with coffee, chocolate, banana, roasted nut, and gingerbread aromas. The mid-palate brings prune and raisin with hints of pepper and more chocolate. The finish is dry on the tongue with a deep, sweet caramel finish. Suitable for cellaring. Enjoy with roasted meats, rich sauces, desserts, or as a meal by itself. 8.5% ABV (bottle and draft).

Hennepin Saison - This saison is a delicious brew for all seasons. Spicy and refreshing, it also has a high alcohol content to keep you warm throughout the winter months. Luminescent, golden color with aromas of citrus and yeast. Mid-palate brings a balance of orange peel, sweet malt, bitter hop, and ginger. The finish has a peppery kick with lemon and hops in the finish. Suitable for cellaring. Enjoy with fresh fruit, cheeses, and spicy foods. 7.7% ABV (bottle and draft).

Pair it with light and summery foods such as barbeque, salads, and picnic fare. 5.1% ABV (bottle and draft).

Rare Vos Amber - This Belgian Amber is styled after the smooth, drinkable beers popular in Belgian cafes. In fact, it's named after one just outside of Brussels: De Rare Vos, which translates as The Sly Fox. This sly fox has a beautiful tawny color with a balanced citrus, hop and caramel malt aroma. Mid-palate is smooth and mellow. It finishes with a perfect blend of fruity yeast and malt with a subtle yet addictive hoppy finish. Enjoy as a session beer or with mussels, fries, and other pub foods. 6.5% ABV (bottle and draft).

Three Philosophers Quardrupel - A dark, mysterious cherry-chestnut color. Flavors of dried dark fruit, chocolate, toffee, and caramel lend to the overall port-like aroma. Mid-palate shows a soft malt center which gives way to a dry, warm, wine-like finish. The strength and complexity of this beer make it a good candidate for ageing gracefully, as spicy sherry and port notes should intensify. Enjoy with rich cheeses, desserts, or as a digestif. 9.8% ABV (bottle only).

Belgian-style Pale Ale (BPA) - This fine pale ale has citrus and tropical fruit aromatic shared with a well-balanced - yet abundant - hop character. This Saison is brewed with parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme. 6.8% ABV (bottle and draft).

The Strongest Beers in the Universe
By: Jim Cohen

Beer is the world's oldest and most widely consumer alcohol beverage. In fact it's the third most popular drink after water and tea. The beer industry reached over $300 billion dollars, and breweries produce over 35 billion gallons a year. But we didn't need to tell the readers of Beer Universe that. What may be of interest is to discover the top 10 beers with the highest alcohol content.

Beers range from less than 3% alcohol by volume (ABV) to over 30%. The alcohol in beer comes primarily from the break-down of sugars that are produced during fermentation. The quantity of fermentable sugars in the wort and the variety of year used are the most important factor that determine the final amount of alcohol in a beer. Most brewing yeast cannot survive at alcohol concentrations above 12%.

After years of craft breweries reaching into the stratosphere of alcohol by volume (ABV) there is a renewed effort to go the other way, and offer lower alcohol beers that don't sacrifice on flavor-also known as session beers. While the majority of beers happily live in the 5-7 percent range, the drumbeat has intensified from customers looking to imbibe several beers without winding up under the table.

"For me it's being able to have one at lunch and not worry about it," explains noted beer writer, author, and TV show host Lew Bryson. Years ago, Bryson remembers being at a tapping event where barley wine was being poured and thinking that, "it tasted so damned good I looked at the glass and wished it was 3.7 percent so I could drink more all afternoon."

Golden Road has a dream: Craft beer at Coachella

With more than 120 artists representing the worlds of rock, dance and hip-hop, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival likely has something for even the most eclectic of tastes. Such variety, however, doesn't extend to the festival's beer options.

Though Los Angeles and its surrounding areas have experienced a growth spurt of late when it comes to craft beer, as evident by the success of such breweries as Golden Road, Eagle Rock, Hangar 24 and many others, Coachella fest-goers have but one option, a certain green-bottled lager from the Netherlands. Sponsorship rules mean L.A.'s nascent Golden Road Brewing won't be able to bring its beer to Coachella's Indio, Calif., site, but its team will get as close as it can.
