Cheese-y Beer Scones

By: Circle B Kitchen

Difficulty: Easy

These hearty buscuits take scones beyond brunch. Not only do they include beer, but call for cheddar cheese, chives galore, Dijon and sesame seeds to boot!

Ingredients

-2 3/4 cups all purpose flour
-1 Tbsp sugar
-2 tsp baking powder
-3/4 cup minced fresh chives
-1 1/2 cusp coarsely shredded cheddar cheese
-3/4 cup (or more) chilled wheat beer
-2 eggs
-1 tsp salt
-1 Tbsp vegetable oil
-2 tsp Dijon mustard
-Sesame seeds

Preheat oven to 425°F. Sprinkle a baking sheet with flour.

Whisk first 3 ingredients in large bowl.

Stir in chives and cheese. Whisk 3/4 cup beer, 1 egg, oil, and mustard in small bowl.

Gradually add beer mixture to dry ingredients, tossing until moist clumps form and adding more beer by tablespoonfuls if dough is dry.

Turn dough out onto lightly floured surface; knead just until dough comes together.

Pat out dough to 1-inch-thick round. Using 2 ½-inch-diameter cutter, cut out scones.

Gather dough scraps and repeat.

Transfer to prepared sheet.

Whisk remaining egg in small cup; brush over scones.

Sprinkle with sesame seeds.

Bake scones until golden on top and tester inserted into center comes out clean, about 14 minutes.

Cool scones on sheet 5 minutes.

Transfer to basket. Serve warm and enjoy!

As March Madness continues on it's journey of perfection to determine the best College Basketball team in the country, our thoughts begin turning to the rites of spring. The crack of the bat, the smell of roasted peanuts and of course the perfect companion to the two hot dogs you just consumed...nice frosty beers. It's baseball season! Time to pull out those stat sheets, split up the season tickets amongst your friends, pull out the trusty lucky baseball hat and buy some cracker jacks. And as spring turns to summer and the pace in South Florida turns to more bustle than hustle...we've got just the beers to wet your whistle as you kick back and sing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game." So let's PLAY BALL!

Cheers,

Waiter, There's a Doughnut in My Beer!
By: Eric Pera

I think I can safely say that Americans are exceedingly adventuresome when it comes to beer. Craft brewers, it seems, are especially fearless in their pursuit of lagers and ales that push the limits of extreme brewing.

Last summer while visiting San Antonio, Texas, I discovered a brew pub making a Belgian wit-style beer made with Spirulina, a type of blue-green algae. The beer was the color of Windex. And it was delicious, with notes of citrus and wheatgrass.

For Christmas, I received a gift that, on the surface, sounds silly. And the packaging only affirms that assumption.

But fear not. Rogue Ale's Voodoo Doughnut Bacon Maple Brown Ale is a serious beer for the connoisseur. It is an homage to one of the top-selling products made by Voodoo Doughnut, a grungy, hole-in-the-wall tucked on a corner in downtown Portland, Ore.

Craft Beer Industry Continues To Surge
By: Tom Rotunno

Any way you look at it, the growth of the craft beer industry continues unabated.

The Brewers Association, the trade association representing small and independent brewers, has released its full 2011 data and the numbers, as usual, are striking.

Craft brewers saw a 15 percent increase in retail sales and a volume increase of 13 percent in 2011, for a total barrel increase of 1.3 million. The Brewers Association estimates the actual dollar sales figure from craft brewers in 2011 was $8.7 billion, up from $7.6 billion in 2010.

Where the Streets Smelled Like Beer

By: Cristopher Gray

THE New-York Historical Society's exhibit "Beer Here: Brewing New York's History," to open on May 25th, is another example of the society's novel approach to presenting local history, in this case with beer tastings. In portraying this foamy story, the exhibit also covers the tale of two of New York's most important brewers, George Ehret and Jacob Ruppert. They competed for the same markets with back-to-back breweries in Yorkville, but were anything but rivals.

After the Civil War, breweries began to dot the Upper East Side near the river, among them the Doelger and Schaefer operations in the East 50s. George Ehret and Jacob Ruppert, both the children of brewers, set up their establishments on East 92nd Street in the 1860s. By 1877, Ehret's Hell Gate Brewery was the largest in the country, with Ruppert not far behind.
