Black Velvet
(ex. Left Hand Milk Stout, Shipyard Blue Fin Stout, Rogue Chocolate Stout)
Pour the stout into a Champagne flute and then slowly add the Champagne trying not to mix. A trick is to use an upside down spoon so that Champagne goes gently down the sides of the flute instead of splashing in the middle. The Champagne should float on top.
You can use Champagne, sparkling wine, Prosecco, or an Asti.

Bock New Year's Black-Eyed Pea Chowder
By: Steve Denney, Craftbeer.com

Difficulty: Easy
You can't ring in a new year without black-eyed peas, and here is a great black-eyed pea chowder recipe for just the occasion. All you need is Shiner Bock(or another bock), fresh black-eyed peas, and time.
Ingredients
-1 pint of fresh black-eyed peas
-3 slices of smoked bacon cut in strips
-2 Tbs. extra virgin olive oil
-12 oz. bock beer (Shiner Bock)
-1 red onion chopped
-1 cup red bell pepper chopped
-1 fresh jalapeño (optional)
-3 cloves garlic, chopped
-1 Tbs. fresh thyme chopped
-3 cups chicken stock
-1 Tbs. smoked paprika
-1 Tbs. cumin
-1 tsp. chili powder
-Handful of fresh cilantro chopped
-Kosher salt & fresh cracked pepper
In a medium stock pot or dutch oven, brown the bacon strips over medium heat until they are crispy. Remove the bacon onto a paper towel and save for later.
Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil, onions, red bell peppers, jalapeños (if using), a pinch of salt and some fresh cracked pepper.
Sauté until onions are soft, about 5 minutes.
Add chopped garlic and sauté for another minute or so.
Add smoked paprika, cumin, chili powder, and stir to incorporate.
Add black-eyed peas, beer, and chicken stock and bring just to a boil.
Reduce heat to low and let simmer uncovered for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Cook until the peas are tender.
Serve with cornbread or as a side dish for pork chops.
Pair with a nice, cold bock.

It seems every time I get to the end of the year, I say to myself that I can't believe that another year has passed so quickly! Most people like to reflect on the previous year and think about all the important experiences that affected our lives. Sometimes there are some really big things that went on but more often there are lots of little milestones that occur. That is why I prefer to look at my calendar and go through all the little and big things that I did in the past year. It makes you realize that the time didn't go by as fast as you thought and you probably did way more than you can remember. Try it...you will truly appreciate the previous year and all that you accomplished.
We at Brown Distributing had events every month from January (Jupiter Craft Brewers Festival), May (American Craft Beer Week), September (Key West Beer Festival), and December (City Link Beer Festival) to just name a few. And the untold amounts of tap takeovers, beer dinners, beer tastings, beer samplings, food pairings and the like that we squeezed in between all of those events. And don't forget about all the great new beers that were brewed and brought into the market. That list would take up several pages. WOW!
Not to pat ourselves on the back, but we sure accomplished a lot of great things in 2011 and we will be doing much more in 2012. January kicks off with the first South Florida Beer Week. So be sure to check out the blog at the following link. We look forward to a great 2012 and seeing you out there.
Happy Beer Year! Cheers, Adam Fine Director of Hoperations

New Arrivals:
DOGFISH HEAD BREWERY
Ta Henket - This beer is a liquid time capsule with ingredients plucked from Egyptian hieroglyphics. It is flavored with chamomile, dom-palm fruit, and Middle Eastern herbs. This ale is fermented with a captured Egyptian yeast strain and brewed with an ancient form of wheat. 4.5% ABV (bottle and draft).
RED BRICK BREWING
Red Brick Mason Series Old Stock Ale - A blend of three copper ales: one aged in oak barrels for 60 days, another brewed with LOTS of dark caramel roasted malts, and one brewed with a blend of sweet and bitter orange peels and star anise. Lots of complexity. Will age well. 7.9% ABV (bottle and draft).
SHIPYARD BREWING COMPANY
Shipyard Applehead - This ale is a crisp, refreshing wheat ale with a delightful apple aroma and subtle cinnamon flavor. 4.5% ABV (bottle and draft).

FORT COLLINS BREWERY Red Banshee - This recipe is a combination of crystal and wheat malts for an impeccably soft caramel flavor punctuated by the piquant character of Willamette and Tettnang hops. 5.3% ABV (bottle only). Rocky Mountain IPA - Fort Collins made Rocky Mountain IPA by dry hopping for an intense floral aroma and adding a generous malt backbone stable enough to support the bracing bitterness of this ale. 6.3% ABV (bottle only). Fort Collins Kidd Lager - This Schwarzbier was crafted to taste much lighter than it looks. Chocolate malt lends Kidd Lager its color while smoked malt adds depth. And a slight dose of Tettnang hops adds a light, balancing bitterness. 4.5% ABV (bottle only). Chocolate Stout - A velvety smooth mouthfeel and impeccable flavor make this Chocolate Stout positively seductive. The medium body will leave your mouth wanting more, while the subtle hop character rounds out the richness of the barley and chocolate malt. 4.9% ABV (bottle only). Z Smoked Lager - Rauchbier dates back to the 1500s in Bamburg, Germany, when malt was often dried over the flames of a beechwood fire. Z Smoked Lager was created to be palatable. Slight caramel undertones and a bright amber color compliment the lingering smoke flavors. The perfect companion to a good meal. 5.4% ABV (bottle only). Major Tom's Pomegranate Wheat - Fort Collins' take on an American classic is the refreshingly crisp Major Tom's. This unique creation is brewed with fresh pomegranates and filtered to achieve a bright color. The result is a striking straw blond beer with a tart finish. 5.2% ABV (bottle only). The Incredible HOP - Fort Collins' inspired IHOP is a "Double-Triple" -- a malty, furiously hoppy double IPA fermented with Belgian triple yeast. No easy baskets here! 9.5% ABV (bottle and draft). Double Chocolate Stout - Big chocolate and roast flavors about as subtle hop bittering rounds out the richness of this ambitious Imperial stout. This blushing black beer is complimented by a thick tawny head and lively chocolate nose. 8.1% ABV (bottle and draft).
ALHAMBRA CERVEZAS Alhambra Negra - This dark brown, reddish-hued lager presents a creamy, nutty nose, with caramel notes and a mild roasted malt character that is all around inviting. Expect a creamy backbone and some slightly roasty, caramel tones, with a distinct note of dark rum. Look for the subtle flavors of anise and black licorice, and enjoy the clean, caramel finish with lingering rum flavors. 5.4% (bottle only). Alhambra Especial - Named after the palace that overlooks the town of Granada, Spain, Alhambra Especial is a drinkable lager with a mellow, crisp flavor. 5.4% ABV (bottle only).

CIGAR CITY BREWING
Ligero Black Lager - A schwarzbier or "black beer" is traditonal dark German lager that has been brewed since the Middle Ages. Ligero Black Lager is a traditional schwarzbier: black, roasted, and nutty. It's low in alcohol at about 5% and quite easy to quaff. 5% ABV (draft only).

And Now, Of Course, There's a Tim Tebow-Themed Beer
By: MJD, Yahoo Sports
It's called "Tebrew" and it's going to be brought to you by Bonfire Brewing in Eagle, Colo. The company's Facebook page describes the beer thusly:
Tebrew Sunday Sipper - a barleywine from Bonfire - is almost here. In the style of 4th quarter heroics, we're waiting until the last minute to serve it up -- the moment the 10oz glasses arrive, the real games can begin. Stay tuned.
Tebrew will be good for a variety of things -- tolerating watching all that Tebowing; celebrating in victory or drowning the sorrow of a loss; dulling the pain of being the victim of a #tebowtipping. It will not, however, absolve you of any sins. In fact, it may cause you to commit many more.

Hoppy Holidays: Sweet Makers Try To Tap Market For Beer Candy
By: Katy McLaughlin, The Wall Street Journal
What's a tasty flavoring for a chocolate bonbon?
This is a question Nicole Greene was asked by an instructor when she was a pastry student in New York City three years ago. That very weekend, Ms. Greene planned to go to a Yankees game, where she would order her ritual soft pretzel and a Bud Light. That's when her flavor idea hit: Beer.
"I realize now it was actually a pivotal moment in my career and in my life," said Ms. Greene, today the proprietor of Truffle Truffle, an online and wholesale confectioner whose top seller is the "Beer and Pretzel Collection," which features beer-and-pretzel truffles and caramels, beer marshmallows and beer brittle.
Ms. Greene is one of a growing number of confectioners who have crossed what may be the final frontier in candy flavoring and begun to market candy made with beer. They've worked out technical kinks (beer burns at the high temperatures used to make many kinds of candy) and developed a market for sweets they describe as "hoppy," "malty" and "yeasty."

By: Brown Distributing Company, South Florida Beer Week
Part of what makes local craft beer special is the stories -- the tales of spirit and passion that drive people to turn this obsession (read: beer!) into a career. So each week on the South Florida Beer Week Blog, we're going to try to give you a little glimpse into those stories by talking with the people behind the beer.
For this first Brew Insight column, we caught a big one: Bob Gordash, founder of Holy Mackerel Beers(née Gordash Brewing). Based in Fort Lauderdale, FL and brewed out of Greenville, South Carolina, Holy Mackerel is known for its compact but ultra-potent line up of Belgian-inspired ales. It's Special Golden Aleis highly drinkable, even at 8.5% alcohol by volume, while it's Mack in Black imperial stout is a beast of a beer with layers of tart pomegranate and chocolate malt. Holy Mackerel's latest brew doesn't relent either -- Panic Attack strong ale, released in 2010, clocks in at a whopping 10%. Talk about big boys.
