Coffee Cake with Brown Ale
(ex. Samuel Smith's Nut Brown Ale, Cigar City Maduro Brown, The Eleven Brown Ale)
Swap the "coffee" in coffee cake for a nutty, rich brown ale to take your brunch (or breakfast if you're so inclined) to the next level. The roasted barley flavors are not unlike those in coffee, and will cut through the richness of the cake. Flavors of butter and spice will pair up with the nutty notes in the ales.

Spicy Indian Tomato Soup
By: Jenny Brule, DRAFT Mag
Difficulty: Easy
The familiar combination of beer and lime lends this easy soup intense brightness and kitchen-filling fragrance. If you're sensitive to spice, exchange the cayenne for chili powder; if you like to feel the heat, turn the curry and cayenne up a notch. The spice makes for a warming winter meal.
Ingredients
-1 12-ounce bottle of pilsner
-1 small red onion, peeled and chopped
-3 large cloves garlic, peeled and chopped
-1 sweet potato, peeled and cubed
-2 28-ounce cans whole plum tomatoes with juice
- 1/2 lime
-1 TBS hot curry powder
-1/8 tsp. cayanne pepper powder
-1 tsp. salt
-1 TBS plus 1 tsp. lime juice
-plain yogurt (optional)
In a large pot over medium-high heat, add the beer, onion, garlic, sweet potato, tomatoes and lime half. Bring to a simmer and let cook 20 minutes.
Remove and discard the lime half and add in the curry powder, cayenne, salt and lime juice, then pure with an immersion blender or in a stand blender. Serve immediately with a dollop of plain yogurt, or refrigerate for up to three days.
Serve with a hop-forward pilsner or India Pale Ale.

Well the weather outside is hardly frightful. And beer is so delightful. And now there's lots of places to go -- grab a beer, give a cheer, it's a great time of year!
It can be tough to get in the holiday mood down here in sunny Florida, where the temperature has barely dropped below 70 yet. ( Man, has it been nice out!) But the holidays are coming anyway... the shopping, the parties, the decorations, the food, and of course the beer! Dark, rich, luscious, spicy, and delicious beers from all over the country and the world are making their appearances in South Florida.
Stouts and porters are just the beginning. Big barleywines and imperial stouts made with cocoa, raisins, cherries, chocolate, and much more are available. Buy two for yourself (you have to have one to age out) and two for your friends (they gotta have one to age out as well), and commence enjoyment!
So check out our list of winter beers -- selections like Cigar City Sugar Plum and Warmer Winter Winter Warmer, Oskar Blues Ten Fidy, Left Hand Fade to Black, Boulder Never Summer, and much more -- and pick out some favs and some new ones you haven't tried. And don't forget about your partygoers -- they need something tasty to drink too! I'm thinking a few 750s to split with your bestys will do the trick. Lots of varieties to choose from. Sounds like that might get you into the holiday spirit... don't ya' think?!?
Cheers,
Adam Fine

New Arrivals:
FORT COLLINS BREWERY
Red Banshee - This recipe is a combination of crystal and wheat malts for an impeccably soft caramel flavor punctuated by the piquant character of Willamette and Tettnang hops. 5.3% ABV (bottle only).
Rocky Mountain IPA - Fort Collins made Rocky Mountain IPA by dry hopping for an intense floral aroma and adding a generous malt backbone stable enough to support the bracing bitterness of this ale. 6.3% ABV (bottle only).
Fort Collins Kidd Lager - This Schwarzbier was crafted to taste much lighter than it looks. Chocolate malt lends Kidd Lager its color while smoked malt adds depth. And a slight dose of Tettnang hops adds a light, balancing bitterness. 4.5% ABV (bottle only).
Chocolate Stout - A velvety smooth mouthfeel and impeccable flavor make this Chocolate Stout positively seductive. The medium body will leave your mouth wanting more, while the subtle hop character rounds out the richness of the barley and chocolate malt. 4.9% ABV (bottle only).
Z Smoked Lager - Rauchbier dates back to the 1500s in Bamburg, Germany, when malt was often dried over the flames of a beechwood fire. Z Smoked Lager was created to be palatable. Slight caramel undertones and a bright amber color compliment the lingering smoke flavors. The perfect companion to a good meal. 5.4% ABV (bottle only).
Major Tom's Pomegranate Wheat - Fort Collins' take on an American classic is the refreshingly crisp Major Tom's. This unique creation is brewed with fresh pomegranates and filtered to achieve a bright color. The result is a striking straw blond beer with a tart finish. 5.2% ABV (bottle only).
The Incredible HOP - Fort Collins' inspired IHOP is a "Double-Triple" -- a malty, furiously hoppy double IPA fermented with Belgian triple yeast. No easy baskets here! 9.5% ABV (bottle and draft).
Double Chocolate Stout - Big chocolate and roast flavors about as subtle hop bittering rounds out the richness of this ambitious Imperial stout. This blushing black beer is complimented by a thick tawny head and lively chocolate nose. 8.1% ABV (bottle and draft).
ALHAMBRA CERVEZAS
Alhambra Negra - This dark brown, reddish-hued lager presents a creamy, nutty nose, with caramel notes and a mild roasted malt character that is all around inviting. Expect a creamy backbone and some slightly roasty, caramel tones, with a distinct note of dark rum. Look for the subtle flavors of anise and black licorice, and enjoy the clean, caramel finish with lingering rum flavors. 5.4% (bottle only).
Alhambra Especial - Named after the palace that overlooks the town of Granada, Spain, Alhambra Especial is a drinkable lager with a mellow, crisp flavor. 5.4% ABV (bottle only).
Samuel Smith's Old Brewery
Nut Brown Ale - The walnut or hazelnut notes in Nut Brown Ale come from dark malts and from fermentation in Yorkshire Squares - no nuts are used in the recipe! Dry, medium-bodied; the Sam Smith ale yeast strain gives a fruity note to the finish. 5% ABV (bottle only).
Oatmeal Stout - Oatmeal and malted barley brewed together into an opaque, chocolate color with a creamy head. The oatmeal lends an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish. 5% ABV (bottle only).
Pale Ale - Captures the soul of beer. It has a fresh maltiness that reminds you that good beer is a product of the soil. Beautiful balance of malt and fresh hops. Copper-colored, rich caramel malt flavor, sophisticated. 5% ABV (bottle only).
Imperial Stout - Opaque ebony color, espresso-like depth, firm structure & roasted barley flavor. Rich, flavorful, deep chocolate color, scented and roasted barley nose. Complexity of malt, hops, alcohol and yeast. 7% ABV (bottle only).
Organic Lager - A full-bodied lager with lots of malt and hop character. A touch hoppier than many lagers yet perfectly balanced. 5% ABV (bottle only).
Organic Strawberry Ale - The subtle but compelling flavors of strawberry in delicious organic ale. Strawberries offer a soft and subtle flavor, making the character of this fruit beer extremely sophisticated and refined. The smooth malt and aromatic strawberry flavors merge together in an elegant fashion, with fresh, ripe strawberries shining through. 5.1% ABV (bottle only).
India Pale - A restrained maltiness and an emphasis on the aroma and flavor of hops from England's finest hop yards. Amber-colored, restrained maltiness, very hoppy. 5% ABV (bottle only).
Taddy Porter - Very dark, fairly full in body and packed with flavor. Intense, dry tangy character of roasted barley. Full, rich, and dark, with a velvet mouthfeel. 5% ABV (bottle only).
Winter Welcome Ale - Throughout history, beer of somewhat higher alcohol and richness has been enjoyed for the winter holidays, when old friends get together to enjoy the season. Winter Welcome is vintage-dated with a special label each year, and was first shipped to the US in 1990 - it was the first imported winter seasonal beer. Serve in a traditional Sam Smith tulip or nonik glass for the holidays. 6% ABV (bottle only).
Pure Lager - Samuel Smith is most famous for classic ales, but it also offers what is described as "England's finest lager." The all-malt beer is brewed with a softer water and fermented in separately-housed stainless steel lager vessels using bottom-fermenting yeast. Rich golden color, delightful floral bouquet with lots of fruity hop character and fragrance. 5% ABV (bottle only).
Lindemans
Framboise - Long before hops were common in most beers, various fruits and vegetables were used to season beers. The acidity of Lambic beers blends perfectly with raspberries. Magnificent aroma, delicate palate of raspberries with undertones of fruity acidity; elegant, sparkling clean taste. 4% ABV (draft and bottle).
Peche - Suggested to Lindemans Brewery by Merchant du Vin in the early 1980s, the sweet rich flavor of ripe peaches is a perfect foil to the complex demanding flavor of lambic. Golden in color; with a nose that fills the room with fresh peaches. Sparkling, crisp, and refreshing balance of fruit and acid. 4% ABV (bottle only).
Kriek - This cherry lambic is best served as an aperitif in place of dry sherry, with carbonnade a la beouf, mussels in white wine or Gueuze, or flavorful cheeses. Bouquet of freshly harvested cherries; sparkling, smooth, fruity, and refreshing, finishing dry. 4% ABV (bottle only).
Pomme - Smooth, light body with the fresh flavor of real apples and a light green-apple tartness. 4% ABV (bottle only).
Cuve Ren - An ancient beer style, Gueuze (pronounced "GOO-za") is wild-fermented wheat beer that is made with only aged hops, and those in small quantities. Lindemans Cuve Ren is authentic "Oude Geuze," every batch blended by hand. Glowing golden color, cidery, winey palate; reminiscent of bubbly dry vermouth but with a more complex and natural flavor. 5% ABV (bottle only).
HOPPIN' FROG BREWERY
Frosted Frog Christmas Ale - The essence of Christmas is captured in this very bottle you are holding. Perfectly blended spices compliment Frosted Frog's rich malt flavors, creating the ultimate Christmas experience. Celebrate the holidays as you savor this very special seasonal offering. 8.6% ABV (bottle only).
WELLS AND YOUNG'S
Courage Imperial Russian Stout - Russian Imperial Stout is a strong dark stout dating back to the 18th century when it was produced at Thrale's Brewery in London to export to the court of Catherine II of Russia. The high alcoholic strength was necessary to prevent the beer from freezing in the temperatures of the Baltic Sea on its voyage to Russia. Along with a high degree of hop bittering, Courage has the aging quality of a fine wine. 10% ABV (bottle only).
CIGAR CITY BREWING
Sugar Plum Brown Ale - Brown in color with a khaki head, Sugar Plum Brown Ale is a beer for the Holiday Season. It immediately asserts itself with spice aromas that remind you of baking in the kitchen with Grandma around Christmas time. Rosehips, hibiscus, and purple plums give a hint of acidity to the toffee sweetness and meld well with the chocolate notes. Cinnamon, chicory, ginger, carob, and cardamom add more depth to an already elaborate beer and bring about memories of Christmas lights and Holiday cheer. 5.5% (draft and bottle).

A Toast to the 21st Amendment
By Michael Johnson, The Daily Caller
Was Monday marked on your calendar as a special holiday? If you are like most Americans, it's just another Monday in December. Even though December 5 may not get the attention of the Fourth of July or Thanksgiving, this day marks an anniversary for our country that is worth recognizing.
It was on December 5, 1933, that the states ratified the 21st Amendment, which forever changed the social and economic landscape of our country. The 21st Amendment is best known for repealing Prohibition and allowing alcohol to once again flow legally after a 13-year ban. But the 21st Amendment did so much more - it implemented solutions after years of systemic societal problems, both before and during Prohibition.
Turn on HBO on a Sunday night and you can see exactly what I'm talking about. Watch just a few minutes of the award-winning series "Boardwalk Empire" and you'll get a real sense of the violent crime that dominated communities; the mobster mentality that controlled governments; and the rampant disdain for the law that generated fear among the lawful as some Americans worked to source illicit and illegal alcohol during Prohibition.

Alaska Man Survives Snow by Eating Frozen Beer
By: The Telegraph UK
Mr Vial, 52, an operator mechanic, was caught in the drift 40 miles outside Nome, Alaska, USA after driving his pickup truck from home to explore how far north a road would take him.
He was unable to dig out of his vehicle and had no mobile phone reception, so wearing nothing but tennis shoes, jeans and a 20 jacket, he climbed into his sleeping back and wrapped a towel round his feet.
"I made an attempt at digging myself out and realised how badly I was stuck," he told the Anchorage Daily News. "I would have been frostbit before I ever got the thing out of there."
Mr Vial's family was away and he realised no one would know he was missing for another day when he failed to show up for work.
Without food, and with temperatures dropping to -17C, he found a few cans of light beer in his truck that had frozen solid, and ate them like tinned food.

If you spend any time in bars, you will inevitably run across people who don't know how to behave. That doesn't necessarily mean that they're bad people, it's just that they haven't figured out the fine points of bar etiquette.
I'm sure we've all been guilty of less than admirable behavior at one time or other. But, once you know how to act in a bar, you will probably do pretty well in life, also. After all, a bar is really just a microcosm of society, and it is often said that one of the best ways to judge someone's character is to see how they interact with service people like bartenders and waitresses.
