Fruit Beer with Triple Creme Cheese
(ex. Sea Dog Blue Paw, Blue Point Blueberry, New Planet 3R Raspberry)
The nutty notes of triple cream cheese isn't something you'd expect to go with a lighter fruit beer, but the sweet fruit aromas and nutty caramel base of these beers match the round, full mouth feel of a creamy cows milk cheese like Mount Tam beautifully. Plus, these refreshing, highly carbonated brews have the added benefit of washing the richness off your palate between bites. Enjoy!

German Schnitzel with Mustard-Beer Sauce

Difficulty: Medium
Ingredients
2 pounds boneless pork cutlets
1 bottle (12 oz) Oktoberfest beer
3 ounces shallots, finely chopped
3 cups chicken stock
1 cup heavy cream
1/4 cup German mustard
2 tablespoons mustard seeds
2 cups white bread crumbs
3 teaspoons cinnamon
2 teaspoons white pepper
1/2 cup chopped parsley
3 whole eggs
1 cup milk
1 dash salt
2 cups flour
Mustard Beer Sauce
Combine shallots and beer and bring to a boil. Cook at a medium heat until reduced by half, then add the chicken stock and reduce again. Lower the heat, add the cream, and continue to simmer until the sauce has reached a creamy consistency. Stir in the mustard and mustard seeds and simmer for 5 minutes, then set aside.
Pork Cutlets
Flatten pork cutlets by placing between two sheets of wax paper and gently pounding with a roller. Once the cutlets are about 1/4" thick, season with salt and pepper and then dredge in seasoned flour. Make an egg wash with milk and eggs, and dredge cutlets. Then finish by dusting the egg wash-dredged cutlets in bread crumbs mixed with cinnamon, white pepper, and parsley.
Heat one inch of oil in a shallow frying pan and fry the cutlets a few at a time. Fry gold brown on both sides, then remove from oil and keep warm until serving.
To Serve
Place 2 large tablespoon of sauce in each plate. Set 2 cutlets per serving on top of sauce and serve with red cabbage and spaetzle.

1982 was the year of the first ever Great American Beer Festival that was held in the very hotel that I am sitting in right now in Boulder, CO. Official sponsorship cost was $200, and the attendance was a whopping 450 people. Not bad for the first ever beer festival in the history of the United States (although one of the original sponsors told me last night that it was a lot of money back then).
On this the 30th anniversary, the festival sold out in record time (approximately 2 weeks) and is being held at the Denver Convention Center. Attendance is expected to exceed 49,000 people over the 6 sessions and 3 days that the festival encompasses! There will be 450 all-American craft breweries represented and over 2,000 different beers sampled. Sponsorships start at $2,500 and go up to $25,000. I'm not sure how many beers will be in the competition, but winning a medal here is one of the most prestigious awards a brewery can win. Quite a change from the festival's humble beginnings.
In a sense this is a symbol of the coming of age for craft beer. Tonight we will join the festival attendees and toast to the success story that this industry has become. So if you have a chance, raise a glass of your favorite beer and recognize that we are finally starting to see this industry reach its glory, and we hope to continue to see its growth in the future.
Cheers,
Adam Fine

New Arrivals:

HOPF WEISBIER BRAUEREI Helle Weisse - This traditional Bavarian wheat beer has been brewed since 1910. With the special flavors of banana and fruit that come from the brewery's own private yeast culture, the smooth, refreshing taste, and the Champagne-like carbonation make this beer a great thirst quencher that goes well with food. Brewed according to the German purity law. 5.3% ABV (bottle only). Spezial Weisse - From a 100-year tradition emerges this Spezial Weisse, a golden-red wheat with an effervescent quality. This full-flavored beer is made from caramel malts which lend the Spezial a strength and fruitiness that goes down smoothly. Pairs excellently with fish and fowl. 6% ABV (bottle only).
SCHONRAMER FAMILY BREWERY Gold Lager - This full-flavored lager is deceivingly pale in color but strong in alcohol, making it a perfect beer for special occasions. For over 230 years, the Schonramer Family Brewery has made its Gold lager with a single malt, Barke, the world's most expensive malted grain. This careful brewing process creates a nuanced, rich, and soulful brew. 6% ABV (bottle only). Pils - Organically farmed Barke malt and a deft hand with aromatic hops make this slightly sweet and potent pilsner a true classic. Open fermented and brewed in the shadow of the Alps by Schonramer for over 230 years. 5.4% ABV (bottle only).
REUTBERGER Export Helle - This recipe was created by the Reutberg cloister of nuns in the 1400s so that the beer would keep on long voyages. They added an extra, but unimposing amount of hops and malt for higher alcohol content and flavor. Today, the nuns continue the brewing tradition with open fermentation and slow, low temperature lagering over 8 weeks to create a very balanced, austere beer. 5.1% ABV (bottle only). Export Dunkel - 331 years ago, the nuns of the Reutberg cloister created the seminal export beer that was to become the trademark formula of the Bavarian-style beer. Out of that tradition comes the Export Dunkel, a rich, deep-red beer with malty aromas of chocolate, molasses, and caramel. This dark red manna has a surprising, guilt-free lightness to it. 5.2% ABV (bottle only).
RED BRICK BREWING Vanilla Gorilla - A smoked porter aged in Tennessee whiskey barrels with smoked vanilla beans, courtesy of Fox Bros. BBQ in Atlanta. This porter was brewed with cherry wood smoked malt. 7.8% ABV (draft and bottle).
BLUE POINT BREWING CO. Oktoberfest - Another palate-pleasing seasonal brew. Originally brewed in 1810 to celebrate the betrothal of the Crown Prince of Bavaria, Blue Point continues the celebration by traditionally brewing this special malty amber lager every October. Oktoberfest lager is stored cold for 2 months to ensure its distinct smooth flavor. 5% ABV (bottle only). Pumpkin Ale - Every season has its pleasures. Harvest your own with our Pumpkin Ale and reap all that Autumn has to offer. Brewed with pumpkins from only the most sincere patches, this seasonal brew is golden orange, crisp, and delicious, with an innocent hint of cinnamon and nutmeg that articulates our favorite season. 6% ABV (bottle only).
HIGHLAND BREWING CO. Clawhammer - Clawhammer Oktoberfest is a lightly colored, but toasty, rich and full bodied Marzen style lager, brewed with traditional German malt and the finest noble hops. A spicy hop finish and aroma balance out the abundance of malt flavor. Clawhammer means pure high-country enjoyment! 5% ABV (draft and bottle). TWISTED PINE BREWING
Bough Breaker Barleywine - A dark ruby amber color with a big tan head. BB features a gargantuan amount of Amarillo hops. Aroma is flowery, spicy, and has a distinct orange bouquet. At first taste, the intense hop characteristic is all encompassing, only to be smoothed out by a caramel, candy-like malt finish. 9.1% ABV (draft and bottle).
ACROBRAU BREWERIES Zwickl Lager - Traditionally there was only one "zwickl" in the brewery and it was held by the one with the greatest authority ... the Brew Master. So only he could unlock the finest brews, including the unfiltered lager. Naturally cloudy and unfiltered flavor with a crisp finish. 5.2% ABV (bottle only).

BITBURGER
Premium Pilsner - Bitburger guarantees premium quality and enjoyment. Drawing on almost 200 years of expertise, the full-bodied, light Bitburger Premium Beer is of course brewed according to the German Purity Law. Its popular, dry-finished, hoppy taste has secured Bitburger Premium Beer its position as Germany's number one draught beer. 4.8% ABV (draft and bottle).
CISCO BREWERS
Pumple Drumpkin - On Nantucket a Pumple named Drumkin, brewed up some great ale with his pumpkins. One and all came to savor the delicious flavor, then wobbled around quite like bumpkins. At Cisco they thought, "This is De-Lish! Let's make some more because we wish, to please all the tourists, and locals and purists, with the best ale that we can accomplish!" 6.88% ABV (bottle only).
CIGAR CITY BREWING
Good Gourd - This imperial pumpkin ale pours a burnt orange with moderate off-white head. Aroma is butterscotch and pumpkin with a bit of spruce and bread. Flavor has plenty of butterscotch with a minor spruce presence amidst pumpkin pie. 8.5% ABV (draft and bottle).
KOSTRITZER
Schwarzbier - Germany's most popular black beer represents an exceptional beer specialty that is the fruit of a unique combination of the perfect art of brewing and a centuries-old tradition. Brewed according to the German Purity Law of 1516, the original is convincing by its light and sparkling character: Barley malts subjected to special processes give it its distinctive, delicate aroma and extraordinary coloration. 4.8% ABV (draft and bottle).
THEAKSTON BREWERIES
Old Peculier - The beer that made Masham famous, Old Peculier has a character all of its own. It is justifiably famous for its rich and complete character, sheer strength, and long history. The definitive and legendary English Old Ale, it is smooth, dark, and full flavored. Brewed using the traditional Fuggle hop and malted Pearl barley, it exhibits a wonderful, complementary and complex subtle fruitiness, malty chocolate sweetness, and hoppy dryness. 5.7% ABV (bottle only).
XB Ale - Theakston XB is the classic English 'bitter' ale -- full bodied, well balanced, and refreshing. A beautiful, ruby-colored ale with a hoppy start, fruity middle, and dry finish. This exquisite balance between bitterness and fruitiness results from the combination of Bramling Cross and Fuggles hops. This delicious mix, together with the malted Pearl barley, is used to give XB its distinctively complex aroma and palate. 4.6% ABV (bottle only).

Traveling Colorado's Beer Trail
By: Laura Bly, USA Today
Whether you're a certified beer geek with a home-brewing kit or a taproom novice who wouldn't know a robust porter from a "training wheels" wheat, it's hard to resist New Belgium Brewing.
Launched in a Fort Collins basement two decades ago and now one of the biggest craft breweries in America, the college town favorite distributes its flagship Fat Tireale in 28 states and the District of Columbia. But from its bike-filled parking lot and on-site climbing wall to an airy tasting room dubbed the "Liquid Center," New Belgium still fosters a strong sense of institutional fun. And a free guided tour - so popular it's often booked a solid three months in advance - is a high point of a Denver-based ramble among the more than six dozen Front Range brewing establishments that make up the "Napa Valley of beer."

Craft Beer Grows Up
By: David Asimov, New York Times
The other night I put on my best suit and tie and went out to drink some beer. Sounds absurd, I know. Even the most dedicated beer lovers lean more toward T-shirts and comfy clothes, which is really as it should be. Yet the fact that beer can also be presented beautifully and appropriately for a dressed-up crowd signals that American beer culture has progressed far beyond what anybody but the most visionary beer fanatic ever imagined.
This particular beer session took place over dinner at Eleven Madison Park, which has one of the most thoughtful selections of beers of any fine restaurant.
It's not simply that Eleven Madison offers many options, although more than 130 beers are available every night. What's noteworthy is the restaurant's determined effort to understand and embrace how the various beers will amplify and enhance the food, where the beers come from and how they are made, the traditions surrounding the various brews and, if it's not too big a word, the emotions that the beers are capable of inciting and expressing.
