Featured Beer and Cheese Pairing:

A Pilsner paired with a Swiss Gruyere (ex. Victory Prima Pils, Avery Joe's Pils, Penn Pilsner, Oskar Blues Mama's Yella Pils, Konig Pils etc.)

A pilsner paired with Swiss Gruyere can yield excellent results. The clean, biscuity flavors of the pilsner combine with the earthy, nutty flavors of the cheese to make a great party starter or fondue match.

Featured Cooking with Beer Recipe of the Week

Honeydew Hefeweizen Smoothie

By: Adventures in Cooking

Melon Smoothie

Ingredients:

-1/2 of a Honeydew Melon

-3 1/3 Cups Vanilla Ice Cream
-1 Cup Hefeweizen (Wheat Beer) -1/2 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract

-Fun Straws (optional)
-Small and Thin Honeydew Slices for Garnish (optional)

Cut the honeydew in half and then remove and discard the seeds using a metal spoon. Wrap up half of the melon and put it in the refrigerator to eat at your convenience.

Cut the honeydew into 2 inch thick slices and then peel the outer skin off of each slice. It is better to cut them into long slices before peeling because they are easier to hold and peel that way than when they are still in a giant awkward half-sphere. Once all of the slices are peeled, cut the honeydew melon into roughly 2 x 3 inch chunks. Place half of the pieces in the freezer, and the other half in the
refrigerator. Let them chill for 1 hour.

Remove the honeydew pieces from the freezer and refrigerator and toss them together in a bowl so they are evenly distributed.

Place half of the the melon pieces into a blender with half of the other ingredients. Put the lid on the blender and blend on high until the mixture is completely blended, about 45 seconds. Pour the mixture into glasses, then repeat this process with the other half of the ingredients. Serve immediately with fun straws and small slices of fresh honeydew, if desired. Makes about 4 servings.

As Father's day approaches and we contemplate all that Dad has done for us in the past and how we can thank him, our thoughts of course turn to beer. (Editorial Note: This is a beer article silly...of course our thoughts will turn to beer). I mean...who gave you your first sip of beer...Dad! And who did you scam your first beer from...Dad...sorry Dad! And who have you discussed the meaning of life with over and over again while having a beer....Dad!

So what would be a more appropriate way to celebrate Father's Day than buying a beer for good ole Dad? Now you can opt for something as simple as a couple of high quality 750 ml or 22 oz beers if that is your Father's speed (maybe Rogue Dad's Black IPA). But then again, how about taking Dad to a great beer event or beer dinner? There is always some more life lessons to learn from Dad and what better way to do just that than over a few delicious beers.

Thanks to all the Dads out there and I hope you all have a great Father's Day!

Cheers,

New Arrivals:

Avery

AVERY BREWING COMPANY

Eighteen Anniversary Ale - For this year's celebratory brew, Avery decided to focus on the characteristics that certain yeasts bring to the party. Each of the five Belgian yeasts selected adds its own unique aspect to the flavor and aroma of this saison. The hefty addition of rye helps dry this beauty out and lends another spicy component to the flavor. And for added fun, they subtly dry-hopped it, too! Brewed with malted barley, imported malted rye, imported specialty malts, hops and a blend of five Belgian yeast strains."

Terrapin

TERRAPIN BEER COMPANY

Side Project Volume 15 Indiana Krunkles - The Legend of Krunkles lives on with number 15 in Terrapin's Side Project series of beers. "Indiana Krunkles" Wheat I.P.A. boasts all the hop adventure of an American I.P.A. while leading you on a quest for the malt and yeast found in a traditional German Hefeweizen. Explore all the unique flavor of this unconventional wheat beverage while your senses take you on a journey into complete beer nirvana. We hope you enjoy this audacious brew! To learn more about the Legend of Krunkles, check out this mini documentary

Red Brick

RED BRICK BREWING COMPANY

Brick Mason Series #2 Double IPA - This limited release is a hoppy brew that is sure to please your senses and assault your taste buds...in a good way, of course! Here are some stats: - To give this brew that extra "hoppiness" Brewmaster Dave brewed with 5 different hops: Apollo, Bravo, Columbus, Centenial and Cascade, 90 IBU's (International Bittering Units), This Brew is a doozie with an ABV of 9%

Peak

PEAK ORGANIC BREWING COMPANY

Weiss Principal - Weiss Principal is the international love child of a German Hefe-Weisse and an American Double IPA. This unfiltered wheat beer employs a traditional German Weiss yeast, providing engaging banana and clove flavors. A stern dry-hopping of a pungent American hops provides pronounced citrus, pine & fruit notes.

Stone

STONE BREWING COMPANY

Belgo Anise Imperial Russian Stout - This 2011 Odd Year release pours pitch black with a deep tan head, with aromatic notes of anise, coffee, and cocoa jumping from the glass. Coffee and dark roasted malt flavors dominate, with a robust complement of anise and oak, which leave a lingering blend of vanilla, licorice, and dark malt on the palate. This one will age nicely for several years

Twisted Pine

TWISTED PINE BREWING COMPANY

Hoppy Boy IPA - Hoppy Boy India Pale Ale is the flagship beer of Twisted Pine. It pours a hazy pale orange and has a dry, tart taste with an earthy bitterness. Pleasant grapefruit and citrus notes are provided by the addition of Cascade hops. This classic American IPA is brewed with medium caramel malts that play off the citrus and orange rind hop flavors to make this beer most enjoyable.

Billy's Chillies - This light-bodied ale has an amazing chili aroma that jumps out at you.  They infuse wheat beer with fresh Serrano, Habenero, Jalapeno, Anaheim, and Fresno chili peppers.  Surprisingly, the chili flavor is strong but not overpowering and comes through without lending too much heat. Billy's Chilies is a very drinkable beer and pairs especially well with food. It finishes dry with a spiciness that will leave you thirsty for more.

Raspberry Wheat - Raspberry Wheat Ale is an unfiltered wheat beer that is refreshing and perfectly balanced with a crisp tartness.  Raspberries meet the nose, leading way to a clean creamy texture.  Pours a golden color with a nice white head. The flavor is subtle, yet very distinct. A popular beer that will bring back your best summer memories all year 'round!

Big Shot Espresso Stout - Rated a 95 on ratebeer.com. Big Shot is a favorite of many coffee-loving beer drinkers. This thick Stout is playfully infused with espresso in every pint. It pours jet black with a rich creamy brown head with wonderful roasted coffee and grainy malt aromas. The earthy, dark chocolate flavors of the espresso showcase the flawless balance of the beer.

Cigar City
CIGAR CITY BREWING

110K + OT Batch #4 - Based loosely on Cigar City's Tocobaga Ale with a serious kick, this time they've crafted an agressively hop forward Imperial Red Ale which they tried to make different and stand out from Batch #3 by attenuating the beer this time for a flavor that leads itself to more balance and less of that cloyingly sweet profile that Batch #3 was known for. Cigar City thinks you will enjoy it, especially once you get your gold-toed work boots off and put those feet up. Whether you drink it from your gold chalice or the bottle is up to you..

Cisco

CISCO BREWERS

Grey Lady Belgian-style Wit - The name "Grey Lady" comes from the nickname for the often-foggy island for which it is brewed. This hazy, Belgian-style Wit emits a complex, earthy nose with sophisticated notes. The sift, malty mid-palate has wicked good zesty hints but gives way to a delectably dry finish. Quenching!

Other returning favorites hitting the shelves:

Stone Russian Imperial Stout, Dogfish Head Theobroma, Dogfish Head Festina Peche, Southern Tier Mokah, Dogfish Head Sah'tea and Dogfish Head Squall

Eataly's Beer Garden Opens to the Sky; Soon, to the Public

By: Florence Fabricant of The New York Times

You could not have picked a better evening than last night (May 25) to exhibit the allure of Birreria, the rooftop beer garden at Eataly. At a preview party  for journalists and other invited guests,  Birreria's retractable roof, rimmed with greenery, was open on a clear warm night to a great view of the clock on the Met Life tower across Madison Square Park.

When it opens to the public, customers can sip house-brewed beers and rustic Italian food at the bar and at bare wood tables and bright red metal chairs.

Gleaming copper brewing and storage tanks for a rotating cast of brews, in a glass enclosure, are the first things visitors see after an elevator ride to the 14th floor and a climb up a staircase with quotes from Dante on the risers.

"It's out in the open for all to see, like everything we do at Eataly," said Adam Saper, a managing partner.

The beers, all cask-conditioned, unpasteurized and unfiltered ales, are a collaboration between Birreria's brewmaster, Brooks Carretta; Sam Caligione of Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales in Delaware; Teo Musso of Birra Baladin in Piedmont, Italy, and Leonardo di Vincenzo of Birra del Borgo in Rome. Taps at the long marble bar are labeled Seasonal, Gina for a thyme-scented ale, and Wanda for a chestnut ale, though none of those was the pleasantly bitter unfiltered ale that was dispensed last night. Other craft beers, Italian and American, will be served on tap, as will red and white wines, including some from the Friuli, Italy, winery of the Bastianich family, partners in Eataly. Mariah Carey & Child Services - Drinking Beer While You Breastfeed

By: Jim Cohen of BeerUniverse

There was an interesting story we came across this morning that touched the world of beer in a somewhat unique manner: breast feeding & beer. Frankly, we didn't think the two subjects went together, but Mariah Carey may have thought differently.

Mariah Carey was interviewed by the L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services during an investigation triggered by an anonymous tip. TMZ reported that the anonymous tip told authorities that Mariah Carey was drinking beer while breast feeding. And, she was.

Mariah explained to officers and social workers that a hospital staffer had told her that drinking dark beer could help with lactating (through the increased amount of yeast). The nurse had also told her that there was no harm in an occasional drink while nursing.

The social workers later found that there was no malicious intent by Mariah and cleared her of any wrongdoing. However, we wanted to dig further and understand a little more on the effects of drinking beer while nursing a child...

If you are a nursing mother and drink beer, the same amount of alcohol that makes it into your bloodstream also makes it into your breast milk. While the amount from one beer may be small, babies do not have developed livers and cannot process alcohol as well as adults (duh!).

According to babycenter.com: Studies show that alcohol can affect babies' eating and sleeping. During the four hours after a breastfeeding mother consumes an alcoholic beverage - such as 4 ounces of wine, one mixed drink, or one can of beer - babies who nurse consume about 23 percent less milk. And while breastfed babies may become drowsy and fall asleep more quickly after their mother drinks alcohol, they also sleep for a shorter amount of time. For full article
