Featured Beer and Cheese Pairing:

Stone Smoked Porter and Spicherhalde Alpkase

A creamy gruyere-style alpine cheese with a slight grassy finish from the Austrian/Bavarian border. Stone Smoked Porter, an opaque smoky-chocolaty stout, made with smoked malt, perfectly mellows the flavorful cheese.

Featured Cooking with Beer Recipe of the Week

Monk and Cheese

By Vanessa of thebeercook.com

Monk and Cheese Difficulty: Easy/Medium

"So I made some crab mac and cheese. Well I guess it's not technically macaroni, so rotini and cheese. Using beer adds a nice depth to macaroni and cheese, and Monk In The Trunk Organic Amber Ale was perfect for it. Not too light, not too strong, and it really enhanced the flavors of the cheese. Sipping the beer alongside the dish made for a delicious pairing."

Ingredients:

8 ounces pasta (rotini works well)

5 ounces crab meat
1/2 cup Monk in the Trunk
1 1/2 cups shredded Gruyere cheese
1 1/2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
1/4 cup finely chopped onion
1 teaspoon minced garlic
2 tablespoons butter
3/4 cup evaporated milk
1/4 cup bread crumbs
1 teaspoon flour
salt to taste

Directions:

Cook the pasta as you normally would. Melt one tablespoon of butter in a saucepan and add the chopped onion and garlic. Cook over medium heat for 5 minutes. Add the milk and beer. Slowly add in the cheese while stirring. Whisk in the flour and season with salt. Remove from heat and add the cheese mixture and crab meat to the pasta. Place in a baking dish or ramekins. Combine the rest of the butter with the bread crumbs and coat the top of the pasta. Bake in a 400 degree oven until the top is golden brown. Pair the dish with Monk in the Trunk.

Adam Fine

We've got cans! Dale's Pale was the first to lead this charge with cans...and now everyone is jumping in. We just launched Avery a couple of weeks ago. Their delicious IPA is the hoppiest beer in the country coming in a can and if hops aren't your thing then maybe the light and tasty White Rascal might be your speed. If you like it dark and delicious...try out Avery's Ellie's Brown named for Adam's labrador. It is a nice easy drinking brown ale that goes down smooth.

But that wasn't enough for Adam Avery, he had to put something in his cans that you can't get in the bottle, something a little out of the ordinary for him.  Adam loves his big beer but after a full night of drinking highly hopped high alcohol and loads of flavor even he needed something to dial it back to. So he came up with Joe's Pils...a delicious nicely hopped Pilsner that you can drink all day and all night and something you can't get in a bottle. Give it a try even if the old Pilsner isn't your style...you just might find yourself putting down a few of these.

And for you fans of Magic Hat, keep an eye out for what can only be described as the coolest trippiest can in the trade...#9 in a can. Be careful you may wind up spinning back into the 70's just by looking at this one.

The times are a changin' and the wave of the future in craft is in the can!

Cheers,

The BrueryCigar City
THE BRUERY AND CIGAR CITY BREWING COLLABORATION

Marrón Acidifié - Imperial Oud Bruin. For their first collaboration beer The Bruery partnered with Cigar City Brewing out of Tampa, Florida. Geographically a country apart but following similar paths, they felt an immediate connection with Joey, Wayne and the crew. They're both young breweries, founded and staffed by homebrewers, who use interesting ingredients and techniques to make unique, full-flavored beers. A recipe was created over pints at Falling Rock Tap House during GABF 2009 and Wayne went out to Orange County to help brew it shortly after. Over a year in barrels has left this dark sour layered with notes of cranberries, tropical fruits, leather and aged balsamic vinegar, balanced by wood tannins and roasted malt. Raise a glass and toast to the success of fledging breweries across this great nation!

Shiner
SHINER BEERS

Shiner Ruby Redbird - Brewed with genuine Texas Rio Red Grapefruit, the signature sweet citrus of the Rio Grande Valley, and ginger. This lager beer features grapefruit tartness and finishes with a 'lil kick of ginger. With Texas Ruby Red Grapefruit and Ginger, Shiner Ruby Redbird is a crisp and refreshing summer beer.

Stone
STONE BREWING COMPANY

Old Guardian Belgo Barleywine - Stone's illustrious brewing team spiked a few barrels of the Stone Old Guardian Barley Wine with their Belgian yeast strain last year, and they absolutely loved it. So much, in fact, that they knew they needed an excuse to make more. So, in their unending quest to constantly challenge the status quo (even their own), they came up with Odd Beers for Odd Years, a program to release odd beers - e.g. Stone Old Guardian BELGO Barley Wine - in odd years (2011, 2013, 2015...). It was met with a bit of resistance (to say the least) since they weren't originally offering the traditional Old Guardian alongside it, but they've mended their ways and decided to make both. You're welcome.

Peak
PEAK ORGANIC BREWING COMPANY

King Crimson- an Imperial Red Ale that delivers a royal bounty of luscious, fruity American hops on top of a sturdy, deep red malt backbone. This beer is lavishly dry-hopped with Simcoe, adding a citrusy and piney flavor and aroma to the toasty, sweet malt notes. This special treat is a very limited release, so enjoy it while you can!

Seattle, WA, April 11, 2011 - The first brewery cooperative in Washington State and only the second in the nation has launched in Seattle! Flying Bike Cooperative Brewery will be built and directed by its owner-members. "We are building a community brewery based on the coop principles. A brewery for the people!" said Jeff Hicks, President. The brewery and taproom is scheduled to be open toward the end of 2012.

As a cooperative, Flying Bike owner-members will choose who will operate the brewery and what beers will be on tap, along with the general direction of the brewery. Owner-members will also receive a taproom patronage refund and other benefits.

"Because we are being directed by our members, the sky is the limit as far as what we can do. Look for a very diverse selection of beer. Because Seattle is such a great beer community, with thousands of homebrewers, we will look to our membership for recipe development. We plan to have rotating taps of member created and selected beers along with a good number of world-class house beers that have been selected by our membership." said Hicks.

The brewery is currently in the planning stages which includes site location somewhere in the Seattle area. A membership drive is also currently under way. A nine member Board of Directors has been established and the coop has been incorporated in the State of Washington.

There is currently only one other cooperative brewery in the nation located in Austin. "It took them 5 years to get open. We have plans to be open in half the time." said Hicks. "We already have very strong membership sales." For original article

Alaska law would allow military to drink at age 18

JUNEAU, Alaska - Alaska is the latest state to weigh in on a long-running argument: If you're old enough to fight and die for your country, you should be old enough to drink a beer.

An Alaska lawmaker who served in Vietnam is pushing a bill that would allow active-duty service members under 21 to drink alcohol as long as they could produce an armed forces identification card. Those under 19 - Alaska's smoking age - would be allowed to buy tobacco products.

"It's not fair that one guy in a fox hole can go home and have a beer while another guy in the fox hole can't," said Rep. Bob Lynn, R-Anchorage. "It's not about drinking, it's not about smoking, it's about equality. If you get shot at, you can have a shot."

But Lynn's bill has received a cool reception from the state's armed forces commanders, who worry it would encourage unhealthy behavior in a military that wants to reduce smoking and curb drinking.

And if the bill passes, the state stands to lose at least $17 million in federal highway funding, state transportation officials say, because Alaska would be in violation of the national minimum drinking age statute. In a state where alcohol abuse is blamed for many social and financial ills, a lower drinking age is a distinction few want. For full article

Baseball Beer Vendor to Make Sales via Twitter

By Wesley Griffin of BeerUniverse

Since its inception five years ago, Twitter has served as an expressive medium for over 200 million users.  You don't accommodate that many personalities and voices without getting some real variety.  After all, the Twitter community was the first to receive an announcement from Barack Obama the night of his election.  It's gotten some people fired and even more people fired up.  Kanye West first apologized to Taylor Swift on Twitter.  And now, one man is set to reach an entirely new demographic of people through Twitter: thirsty baseball fans.

Kevin Zelko, who works by day as a teacher to special needs children in Seattle, is about to become the first Major League Baseball beer vendor to take orders by tweet.  Instead of waiting that extra half inning for the traditional Mariners beer man to make his way through the aisles, visitors to Safeco Field can send a message to Zelko's Twitter account, @Msbeervendor.  Include your order and your seat number, and he'll start heading your way with the suds.

Zelko isn't just changing his strategy for the novelty, though; he expects his idea to spawn a generation of smarter vendors. CNBC's Darren Rovell reports that he averages 80 beers sold per game on weeknights and over 100 on weekends and when major franchises come to town.  Yet he sees inefficiency in the time-honored method of simply moving from aisle to aisle and using charisma and catchphrases to convince attendees how parched they must be.

Not only should his Twitter service lead him more directly to customers who are ready to purchase beer, but Zelko also believes that serving customers with smartphones means serving to greater affluence.  More money to spend should result in bigger tips, or at least that's what he is banking on.  He also may avoid some of the dead moments when vendors get stuck because of crowded aisles screaming for Ichiro or making moves en masse to the restrooms.  For full article

For some people, nothing quenches a big thirst better than a frosty beer. Yet, when that big thirst is the result of exercise or playing a vigorous sport, the best thing to drink is water or a sports beverage such as Gatorade, which restores levels of electrolytes. For the study, Garzon asked a group of students to perform strenuous exercise in temperatures of around 104ºF. Half the subjects were given a pint of beer after the workout, the other half the same quantity of plain water. Garzon said the hydration effect in those who drank the beer was "slightly better."

Juan Antonio Corbalán, a cardiologist who formerly worked with Real Madrid soccer players and Spain's national basketball team, insists that beer has the "perfect profile" for a rehydrating beverage after sports. Corbalán adds that he has long advocated the drinking of barley-based beverages by professional athletes. For full article
