Kriek Lambic and Brie (Ex. Timmermans Kriek and Cantillion Kriek)
Brie is a creamy, soft-ripened cheese that, when perfectly ripe, will be spreadable at room temperature. A chalky center indicates an immature Brie. Brie's rich taste notes are both buttery and woodsy, reminiscent of mushrooms (especially when tasted with the snow-white, edible rind). A Belgian-style kriek ale (traditionally brewed with wild yeasts and aged hops) and infused with both delightful color and bouquet by the addition of fresh, sour cherries. The fruity, sweet taste of the beer goes well with the ripened Brie.

Featured Cooking with Beer Recipe of the Week |
Saison Rueben
by Claire Thomas - thekitchykitchen.com
Yields: 3
A trick for a really mean sandwich is to drizzle a little beer over the bread before you toast it, just to get the beer flavor deep in there. It will transform the baguette into a toasty malted rye loaf and rounds out the flavors deliciously. Reubens are best straight out of the oven, but if you have to wait, they also make perfect picnic sandwiches. Enjoy!
Ingredients: For 3
1 large baguette 2 lbs pastrami (Niman Ranch makes a delicious one) 3 brown onions, sliced 2 cloves garlic, minced 3 tablespoons butter 1 pint sauerkraut (It is a pain to make from scratch, so buy some from your favorite deli) 6 juniper berries, crushed 1 tablespoon olive oil 6 slices gruyere or comte (any swiss cheese will do) 1-1 1/2cup Saison Rue 3 tablespoons whole grain mustard
Directions:
Preheat your oven to 350 F. Heat a pan over medium heat, add the butter and then the onions. Flavor with a pinch of salt and freshly ground pepper, and once translucent (about 5-10 minutes) add the garlic. Cook until completely caramelized, meaning a deep golden hue. When they look almost done, turn up the heat to medium high and add 1/2 a cup of the beer. Keep cooking until it has reduced down and has been absorbed into the onions. Set aside. Meanwhile, heat up the sauerkraut in a pan over medium heat with the juniper berries, olive oil, and some salt and pepper for seasoning. When warmed up, add bit of the beer, about 2 tablespoons to a 1/4 cup, and cook until the beer has reduced a bit and is absorbed (about 5 minutes). Set aside. Slice the baguette into three equal sections, then in half lengthwise.
Sprinkle each side with 2 tablespoons (or more if you want) of the beer and pop in the oven for 5-10 minutes to dry them out, then crank up to broil for a few second to toast them a bit. Add the pastrami and cheese to the bottom half of each sandwich and return to the oven at 350 F until the cheese has melted. Top with the onions, sauerkraut, and a little mustard, and enjoy with a beer!

So it's the day after St. Patty's and you are a bit hungover....wondering what you are going to do with your left over corned beef and then the Fresh Beer Times hit's your email box with a delicious recipe for a Saison Reuben. What better a cure for a hangover than a delicious cured beef and cheese sandwich and made to perfection with the addition of a touch of your favorite Saison! I am salivating while I write this....excuse my drool.
And if that cures your hangover...you might be able to make it to a couple of the events we have going on today (March 18th). The Joint (South Miami) is having a Left Hand night with a pint glass giveaway so get there while supplies last. If you are in Lauderdale, swing into the Riverside Market for a great Blue Point sampling featuring the new Spring Fling and maybe a little Old Howling Bastard or Double Blonde...or are you just still seeing Double? Great little market with awesome food tucked into a hidden corner of Sailboat bend if you are not familar with it. Look for the only swing bridge in South Florida and perhaps all of Florida and you will know you are getting close.
Many other great events this month, awesome beer dinners and don't forget about Spring Training up at Roger Dean stadium where they are now pouring Monk in the Trunk. Baseball and good beer....could life be any better?
Cheers,

New Arrivals:
 HEAVY SEAS BEER
Aarsht Red - Heavy Sea's version of the Irish Red Ale, brewed with 3 kinds of grain then pulled through a pot of gold with 2 kinds of hops. Slainte!
Black Cannon - The style is an oxymoron but this ale is an extension of their Loose Cannon style brewed with black malt.
 DOGFISH HEAD CRAFT BREWED ALES
Namaste - A Belgian-style White made with dried organic orange slices, fresh cut lemongrass and a bit of coriander. This beer is a great summer quencher. Namaste was originally brewed at their brewpub with Dogfish's friend Leo from Birra del Borgo in Italy as a tribute to their friends at 3 Fonteinen brewery in Belgium, who had devastating production loss (1/3 of their annual production!) at their brewery in 2009.
 VICTORY BREWING COMPANY
Donnybrook Stout - The most refreshing dark beer you could ever imagine this side of Dublin! Low alcohol and roasted barley keep it clean and flavorful. The subtle earthiness of European hops harmonize with the roasted barley to offer a whiff of peat. Served with the classic nitrogen pour, Donnybrook delivers an impressive head and silken body of a classic stout (draft only).
 CIGAR CITY/SAINT SOMEWHERE COLLABORATION
Vuja De - Ale with Black Currants, Locally Foraged Lemon Leaves, Hibiscus, Cane Sugar and Elderberry Flowers. Designed and brewed at Cigar City in collaboration with Bob Sylvester of Saint Somewhere Brewing
SUMMIT BREWING COMPANY
Maibock- Originally brewed by monks, Bock became the official beer of May Day celebrations. In that centuries old tradition, Summit created Maibock. This malty, pale beer is brewed using Czechoslovakian Saaz hops, specialty malts and German lager yeast.
HIGHLAND BREWING COMPANY
Little Hump Spring Ale - This American Pale Ale is a refreshing session beer meticulously handcrafted with a unique Highland twist. Brewed with grains from America's heartland, using Simcoe hops for bittering and dry hopped with Amarillo and Cascade for aromatics, this beer finishes crisp and clean. It is a palate pleasing seasonal experience.
Other returning favorites hitting the shelves:
Shipyard Summer Ale, Blue Point 6-packs including their Blueberry Ale, Pale Ale, Toasted Lager and Hoptical Illusion IPA, Dogfish Head My Antonia, Stoudts Karnival Kolsch, Cigar City Patio Tools (draft only), Terrapin Rye Squared and Dogfish Head Aprihop

Beer Market: Where you bid for your brew
Drinking in Singapore is an expensive exercise.
Everywhere else in Asia, a cold brew can be bought for as little as US$1 ($1.28). But not so in Singapore where a single beer can set you back $20 at certain upscale bars.
Enter Beer Market with its welcome "buy low, drink high" mantra.
Using the concept of the stock market to price its brews, punters consult the LCD screens displaying various beers alongside listed prices, volumes, changes and week highs -- similar to what you find on a stock market screen -- and watch as beer prices rise and fall according to supply and demand.
Prices are updated every half an hour and hopefully the beer selected does not get too popular before the order is registered.
This is possibly the only place in Singapore where one prays for a market crash.
While prices can start as low as $7, expect to pay between $12 and $14 for some beers. Do keep an eye out though as there has been an instance where a beer shot up beyond the $100 mark. For full article

Berlin's New Brew
German innovation cruises into Berlin's brewpubs.
By Sabrina Small
For as entrenched as beer is in German culture, Berlin's never been Bavaria: For decades, there's been little to no local beer production. But a new, punk-inspired beer revolution is bubbling up, and unlike bucolic Bavarian beer, Berlin's micros reflect the city's lean, contemporary and slightly bitter quality.
While U.S. microbreweries work tirelessly to move their bottles on supermarket shelves, Berlin's top priority for micro-beer production is getting the beer from the tank to your lips in the fewest steps possible.
"We don't plan to bottle," says brewmaster Martin Eschenbrenner of Brauerei Eschenbräu, a small brewing site and pub in the industrial neighborhood of Wedding. With his bald head, Popeye arms and workman's coverall, Eschenbrenner looks like the guy on the Mr. Clean bottles, or as he is referred to in Germany, Mr. Proper-fitting, given Eschenbrenner's obsession with proper delivery. "It's a completely fresh product," he asserts. "I put the beer directly into kegs and drive it to the bars myself. It's cold from start to finish."
Eschenbrenner's second concern is introducing skeptical Berliners to unfamiliar styles. His beer names reflect his read on the local beer scene, such as his latest creation, an IPA he named Alter Schwede ("old Swede"), a Berlinisch term meaning "pleasant surprise." No one in Berlin has ever attempted an IPA, and Eschenbrenner himself was unfamiliar with the term until he sampled a Stone IPA on a recent tour of California breweries.
"I want Berlin to be as crowded with breweries as Northern California," Eschenbrenner beams. "Berlin used to have over 200 breweries. Now, it is stripped down to one big one. And that's horrible." Eschenbrenner, whose smiling cartoon visage has appeared on every growler and glass since he opened up shop seven years ago, doesn't let the fact that Berlin is a black hole for microbrewing culture hinder his creativity. His beers are both playful and impressive in their exactitude. Eschenbräu Rauchbier, for example, went through eight trials before he felt it was just right. "I wanted it to be something more subtle than bacon in a bottle. You can smell the bacon for sure, but it's almost like an entire breakfast...there's coffee, toast and a slice of bacon."For full article

Colorado Beer Lovers Plan to Man Up
By Wesley Griffin of BeerUniverse
If you were surprised when we (Beer Universe) told you about the North Carolina company that just began selling cookies to pair with craft beer, then you're not going to believe this story. Oskar Blues Brewery - the craft-in-cans pioneers from Longmont, Colorado - will soon host an event called "Man Up" that pairs four of their award-winning brews with five varieties of Girl Scout cookies!
The event, meant for adults only and organized by Elizabeth Winn and a council of local supporters, will highlight the contributions that men have made for Girl Scouts across the United States. The Longmont Times-Call reports that they will also discuss the many changes made in the Girl Scouts organization over the years, in hopes of growing the 10,000-person pool of adult volunteers in Colorado and increasing the ratio of males to females involved.
"Man Up" will also function as a fundraiser. Proceeds of the tickets, which will sell for $25 each, go directly to the 2,400 Girl Scouts in the St. Vrain Valley area. Each Colorado Girl Scout gets $329 annually from the organization. The more successful fundraising events and awareness campaigns are at driving attention and money into the program, the more local projects, summer camps and troop development activities the girls will be able to enjoy.
Planners of the event are relying on the tried and true method of tempting men with beer to wake them out of their slumber and spur some activity. Not only will attendees get samples of Oskar Blues beer, but they will also have the opportunity to tour the brewing facility. The canning line may be of particular interest, as Oskar Blues was the first to put craft beer in cans for distribution, an environmentally smart and cost-effective method that has seen a surge of popularity in recent months. New beer to mark upcoming royal wedding
A British brewery launches a new beer to mark the upcoming wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.
It will produce 70,000 bottles of the special, "Kiss Me Kate" ale for sale during April. Another 100 bottles will go to collectors.
The beer is just one way Brits are commemorating the April 29th wedding. Earlier this week the royal mint debuted a new five pound coin with a portrait of the couple. For original article
