Featured Beer and Cheese Pairing:
Provolone and a Classic Pale Ale (Ex. Flying Dog Doggie Style, Summit Extra Pale, Blue Point Pale Ale, Cisco Whale's Tale, Highland St. Terese, Stone Pale etc.)

The hop flavor and bitterness of a classic pale ale tends to be enhanced by the smooth flavor and somewhat bread-like texture of Provolone.  Provolone is a semi-hard, all purpose cheese that can be quite mild when young and more sharp, smoky, and spicy when aged.  Cabernet Sauvignon wine is often served with Provolone, and many would consider the dryness and bitterness of a good pale ale to be reminiscent of a Cabernet.

Wow!  What a great weekend was had by all up in Jupiter last weekend.  Field of Beers was fantastic with out of this world food pairings and a beautiful night under the stars.  Some highlights included the Wake and Bake Ice Cream float and the Lobster Mac and Cheese paired with Cigar City Jai Alai White Oak IPA.  Then the next day was the Jupiter Beer Festival where we were able to bring in some really great special beers just for this event like a Firkin of cask conditioned Yakima Glory from Victory and the new Shipyard Double Thumper. Not to mention breaking in the new Randall 3.0 with fresh hops and Dogfish Head 60-minute IPA and then Raison D'etre with roasted peanuts and green raisins.  And that was just the tip of the iceberg.  I just want to thank Fran Andrewlevich who puts on this great event every year.  Simply put, the best 2 beer events in the state in one weekend....Thank you!

And another great thing about this event is that it is always planned for the weekend in between the last playoff game and the Superbowl so all you football fans don't have to miss out. So mark your calendars for 2012 now!  And that brings us to this weekend....from the frozen tundra of Cowboys Stadium (yes..that's right...frozen!)....Superbowl XLV!  Fun but sad isn't it? The big blowout is always a good time to get together with your friends and break out a great beer or 4 (not too many...you still have to get up for work on Monday!).  You got the friends, the beer, the game, the commercials...what more could you ask for?  Be sure to check out some of the Superbowl events that our accounts are putting on or if you are staying in....be sure to stock up on your favorites before they sell out.  It is the Superbowl...isn't it?!

Cheers,

PALM Ale- PALM Ale has long been one of Europe's top-selling specialty beers and when you taste it, you will know why. Made with English hops, French Barley, and Belgian yeast, PALM represents the best of European beer-making traditions. It's the roasted Champagne Malt which gives PALM its amber color, but without being heavy. PALM is a great alternative to traditional pilsners and lagers for the beer drinker looking for something a little different. Noted beer writer Michael Jackson described PALM Speciale as "exceptionally fresh, with aromas of toasty malt, a bitter-orange palate and a tartly refreshing finish."

Beer consumption in the home of some of the most-loved beer brands in the world is continuing to drop, according to official statistics released this week. Beverage makers are turning to experimental alternatives.

The statistics are a tragedy for beer-lovers - for the first time since German reunification in 1990, annual German beer sales dropped below 100 million hectoliters. The Federal Statistics Office released the depressing data on Thursday: German breweries sold 98.3 million hectoliters of beer in 2010, 1.7 percent less than in 2009.Even more demoralizing, domestic consumption went down by even more. Beer turnover in Germany sank by 2.9 percent to 83.4 million hectolitres - only 101.8 liters per person.

But Marc-Oliver Huhnholz, spokesperson for the Association of German Brewers (DBB), said German demographics made the decline inevitable.

"There's a very simple explanation," he told Deutsche Welle. "The socio-demographic development in Germany is the way it is, and it means that for the last 30 years and more, the beer market has shrunk by between one and two percent every year. So with this year's fall of 1.7 percent, we're in the normal range."

The message might fly in the face of regular newspaper reports about binge-drinking, but Germany's aging population means less beer, and less alcohol in general, is being consumed.

"The number of German beer-drinkers is going down, and in the last ten years, another 500,000 weren't born - so to speak - who could take their place," Huhnholz added. "Meanwhile, the older age groups - who used to drink a lot of beer - have got older, are working less and drinking less." For full article

Regulators push for nutrition label on beer, wine, and spirits

Ever wonder how many calories are in your glass of wine, bottle of beer or shot of whiskey?

With light-beer makers touting calorie content on their brews and controversies over flavored alcoholic drinks, the federal Tax and Trade Bureau, which regulates alcohol labeling in the United States, is renewing a push for everything from wine, beer, and vodka to have calories and nutritional information.

While slapping more nutritional information on beer and wine could be welcome for carb and calorie counters, it could be a headache for producers, who fear they would be obliged to pay for expensive tests and change labels more frequently.

Robert Mazza, owner of Mazza Vineyard in North East, Erie County, and president of the Pennsylvania Winery Association, said the problem is the testing more than the labeling. Only the largest of wineries have the laboratory and equipment muscle to conduct the complex tests required to break a beverage down to its nutritional components.

"A small winery makes small batches of many wines," Mr. Mazza said. "You'd have to go to an outside laboratory."

Mark Lehman, co-owner of Breaker Brewing Co. in Plains, makes beer in 93-gallon batches - each one slightly different from the other. Depending upon the proposed requirements, he might have to get expensive testing and new labels for each batch.

"People are more health conscious," Mr. Lehman said. "Depending upon what the final requirement would be, it could be costly."

Beer and spirits writer Lew Bryson supports the move, so long as small brewers, vintners and distillers are exempt just as small food producers are exempt from labeling. For full article

Super Bowl decision -- what to drink during the game

By Leslie Gevirtz

NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) - With about 100 million Americans expected to watch the Super Bowl on Sunday a big decision for many fans will be what type of beer to drink during the four-hour television broadcast.

Gene Muller, the owner of the Flying Fish Brewing Company in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, said the choice of lager or ale for the game between the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers could depend on whether or not you're a football fan.

"If you're going to watch the game, you need something that will let you get through the four hours. Like an extra pale ale that has some flavor to it, but allows you to still be able to enjoy a few," he said.

"If, on the other hand, you're just interested in the commercials and don't mind sleeping through the half-time show, you can go with something that may have a bit more flavor and alcohol like a Belgian-style beer."

At the Hinterland Brewery in Green Bay, Wisconsin, where every good football game is accompanied by bratwurst, owner Bill Tressler expects most of his customers will be sipping the fuller-bodied ales. "The hoppiness of the ales really stands up very well with the spice from say bratwurst or chicken wings," he explained, adding that when the Packers win, he will break out the maple bock."

"It's made with maple syrup. We don't use the maple for flavoring. We use it for extra fermentable sugar," he said. For full article
