Featured Beer and Cheese Pairing:
Fresh Chevre and a Framboise (Ex. Timmermans Framboise)

A chevre is an earthy, creamy fresh goat cheese. The low alcohol content of a framboise and natural fruit flavors complement the creaminess of the cheese without overpowering it. (think of cream cheese and jam). The carbonation and minor tart flavors help cut through the richness of the cheese.

In 2010 we have gone from the beer festival to the full on beer week.  Philadelphia has Philly Beer Week...Baltimore, New York and San Francisco too !  We haven't actually gotten to the point of putting together a full lineup for our own South Florida Fresh Beer week.......yet !  But leading the charge this year is Bethany "Chip off the ole' Stone block" Sherwin our fabulous Florida Stone rep who is kicking off the first ever Stone Week.  That's right...a full week of events celebrating was has been called the "Greatest Brewery in the World" by Beer Advocate.  With events in all 3 counties (sorry to Monroe...hopefully next year) and going on all week....there is no reason you can't get out to at least one event and "Get Stoned" with great beers like Lucky Bastard, Verticle Epic 10.10.10, Russian Imperial stout and many, many, more.  Check out all the dates and times below and get out and enjoy.

Cheers,

New Arrivals:

Highland
HIGHLAND BREWING COMPANY

Cold Mountain Winter Ale - Highlands ever-changing spiced winter seasonal. A tasty brew that complements all your holiday festivities. It is typically malty in body, lightly hopped, and rounded out with spices that they vary from year to year

The Bruery
THE BRUERY

Three French Hens -   The third in the 12 Days/Years of Christmas Series. They again drew some inspiration from the name and decided that at least a portion of this beer had to be aged in French oak barrels. The Bruery came out with is a bold and spicy Belgian Dark Strong Ale, 25% aged in oak. This beer is designed to take the journey through time until 12 Drummers Drumming, but is a delightful holiday treat right off the shelf

Narragansett
NARRAGANSETT BEER

Porter - This American-style porter has robust malt flavor with a slight hop character. It is brewed with chinook hops for bitterness, simcoe hops for aroma, black malt, pale malt, chocolate malt, munich malt, crystal malt, roasted barley, and ale yeast. Giving it an imperial taste.  Gansett Porter offers an extremely approachable craft experience that, unlike many of the other porters on the market, is not overly smoky or bitter. The Narragansett Porter has a deliciously mild chocolate flavor with just a hint of smokiness and hops to balance out the finish.

Breckenridge
BRECKENRIDE BREWERY

Christmas Ale -The chill of a Colorado high-country winter calls for a beer with extra flavor and warming characteristics. Here it is. Breck Brew's Christmas Ale. At over 7% alcohol, with a sturdy texture and rich flavors of caramel and chocolate, Breckenridge's holiday seasonal is the fermented equivalent of a good fire. The ultimate winter warmer.

Southern Tier
SOUTHERN TIER BREWING COMPANY

Oat Imperial Oatmeal Stout - This beer begins in spring when oat seeds are sown as soon as the soil can be worked. Meanwhile, select types of barley are planted with hopes that Mother Nature will be kind. Southern Tier's brewers wait patiently until the legumes are mature and ready for the scythe. Upon delivery to the brewery, these ingredients are mixed together in the mash tun where they steep, creating a rich molasses-like liquid. Spicy hops are boiled with the thick brew, giving balance and complexity. Brewers yeast feasts upon the rich sugars, concluding its transformation into oatmeal stout. Pour Oat into a snifter, allow its thick tan head to slowly rise, releasing unbridled aromas. The color of Oat is as dark as a moonless night. The first sip reveals Oat's thick and nourishing taste. Like a haversack to a horse, a bottle of this stout is a meal in itself. Enjoy responsibly.

Ayinger
AYINGER BREWING COMPANY

Weizen-bock - The weizen-bock style is relatively uncommon, even in Bavaria: they are wheat ales (weissebeer or weizen beer) that are brewed to be as strong as a bock - with corresponding fuller body, and enhanced flavors. They can be pale ("helles") or dark ("dunkles"), but Ayinger Weizen Bock is pale in color. Classic Bavarian weissebeer aroma suggesting spice and cloves; smooth body from wheat and from decoction mashing; extravagant, pinpoint conditioning. The flavor offers the essence of the wheat harvest, fresh-baked bread, maybe even - somehow - the sunshine of a fall afternoon. The finish is tropical fruit, cloves and banana.

Victory Logo
VICTORY BREWING COMPANY

Yakima Glory Ale - The tenacious grip of big, juicy hop aroma and character slides smoothly into rich, dark malts. This heavyweight battle between fresh, Yakima Valley hops and dark, roasted malts is resolved harmoniously as the flavors merge to deliver complex satisfaction with a warming edge. Bask in the "glory" of the bright and brassy hops!

Even the Founding Fathers Loved Beer
Barry Petersen Talks to Beer Lovers Who Look Down on Wine

(CBS)  For many a football fan, watching the big Sunday game is a lot more fun accompanied by some beer. Barry Petersen reopens the old debate between beer and wine:

Beer - some say it's time this lowly brew gets a lot more respect.

The argument for beer begins, where else, on a college campus, at the University of California-Davis, with the man they call the professor of beer.

Charlie Bamforth teaches brewing and he throws down the gauntlet on wine versus beer.

He calls the brew "the most sophisticated and complex of alcohol beverages."

More than wine? "Yes," said Bamforth.

Oh, come on. And how?

"It's much more complicated to make."

For proof, stop into the Wynkoop Brewery in Denver, Colorado, one of 1,500 craft breweries in the country. Beers are made on site, with names like Two Guns Pilsner and Cowtown Milk Stout.

Marty Jones, who helps promote beer, starts with a touch of history: How country was founded by men who planned our nation's future over beers in the taverns of the Northeast - the Founding Fathers.

"Thomas Jefferson was a brewer. Washington was brewer. Ben Franklin was a brewer," Jones said.

Beer has always had its place in America's fabric, from the ballpark, to the White House, to television.

As for the words wine drinkers use to describe taste, try some beer terms on for size.

"We have flavors of caramel, malt, coffee, chocolate, toffee. Then you add hops, and you get aromas of pine, and juniper, and citrus, and grapefruit and orange," Jones said.

But, let's face it - the problem with beer is not about the pint, but the perception.

Andy Brown, the Wynkoop brewmaster, said, "It's the Rodney Dangerfield of adult beverages. You know, we just can't get no respect." For full article

Nutritious Beer: The Darker the Better
From Beer Universe

Reminiscent of the turning seasons, beer styles often change just before the first spring bloom or last falling leaf. Seeing that we are approaching the winter season, the seasonal change is taunting our taste-buds to crave a heartier brew.

Interestingly enough we were pleased to read an old article provoking the benefits of the darker, maltier flavors of fall and winter. A study first conducted by the University of Wisconsin in 1997 found evidence that drinking darker beers may reduce the risk of heart disease. Obviously, we stress that not like Popeye's spinach, drinking as much dark beer as you can does not increase health benefits more, but rather in moderation, the micronutrients in a more malty brew can actually be more beneficial than those found in a lighter beer.

Researchers from Wisconsin, compared the results of drinking Guinness or Heineken on arterial health. They fed the two styles of beer to ~8 canines suffering from clogged arteries. At the end of the day, the dogs were not drunk but rather researchers found that those nourished by the dark ale improved more significantly than those nourished by the light beer. How does this happen? For full article

Searching For Science In A Glass Of Beer

NPR's Science Friday had an interview this week with Charlie Bamforth, talking about beer and his new book, "Beer Is Proof God Loves Us: Reaching for the Soul of Beer and Brewing." Bamforth, of course, is the Anheuser-Busch Endowed Professor of Brewing Science at the University of California at Davis. In the segment, entitled Searching For Science In A Glass of Beer, Charlie takes questions and discusses the brewing process more generally. There's also a transcript of the talk on their website. Enjoy. To take a listen to the segment.
