Fall is in the air and the rest of the country has begun to pack up and begin their slow hibernation for the winter.  But in South Florida, we celebrate this time of the year.  The cool dry air, the lack of a hurricane threat, the beautiful sunshine...it just makes you want to be outside all day.  Of course this is also the time of year that our event schedule picks up.  And according to our recent forecast, this first weekend is gonna start out perfect.  We've got Rocktoberfest tonite and then the Hard Rock fest tomorrow....only one of two beerfests in South Florida of the year that actually happens during the day.  So come on out and celebrate the beginning of our season with some great beer and an excuse to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather.

Cheers,

Adam Fine

New Arrivals:

Belukus
BELUKUS MARKETING

Fresh Beer has begun working with Belukus Marketing to provide a variety of  some of the finest Specialty Beers and Ales of the world.

Konig Pilsener -The king of the beers - Unique in the taste. The Premium-Pilsener of highest quality.

Barbar - Barbar beer is prepared from a secret and harmonious mixture of barley malts, hops and honey carefully selected by Lefebvre's Master Brewer. The traditional brewing method, associated with their unique strain of yeast, and the secondary fermentation in the bottle, gives Barbar the authentic flavour of a very special ale.

Malheur 10° - Belgian ale re-fermented and bottle-conditioned Full bodied, medium strong, gold coloured beer, with a rich honey-like texture, and a pleasant warming, slightly hoppy-dry lingering aftertaste. Rose-like, peachy aroma. Orangey, lemon-grass and lemoncurd flavours. Rich, oily, honeyed texture. Medium to full body. Big, orange-zest and a hint of bitter sourness in a warming finish.

Malheur 12°- A dark brown ale with beautiful and rocky "café latte" light brown foam. The flavour is malty and cereal and might invoke thoughts of fresh cut bread. The taste of Malheur 12° is full, round, with a touch of sweet alcohols, but the ale is still dry and bitter coffee, with touches of nuts, honey and rum from the brown candy sugar. The aftertaste is bitter-sweet, long and warm.

Bombardier Premium Bitter - The subtle bitterness is derived from the English Challenger Hop and the colour and aroma stems from using Crystal Malt and Goldings Hops. Wells Bombardier uses more malt per pint than other premium bitters. Our English Crystal malt is ground, rather than crushed, to give a richer, more rounded flavour and Wells Bombardier's characteristic deep copper colour.

Banana Bread Beer - Wells Banana Bread Beer continues the Wells family traditional yet innovative approach to brewing fine ales and is '. Wells Banana Bread Beer partly take its name from the Saxon phrase for beer - 'Liquid Bread'. Combining traditional ale recipe with the flavor of 'fair trade' bananas creates an intriguing and flavorsome pint. It has been described by renowned international beer writer, Michael Jackson, as "...fruity roughness of winter barley and toffeeish sweetness of crystal malt...hugely tempting aroma of bananas; creamy head; firm, silky body."

Timmermans Framboise Lambic - Timmermans Framboise Lambic faithfully reflects the colour and flavour of ripe raspberries, with no trace of the acidity of lambic. This wonderful flavour reaches its peak with its intensely fresh after-taste.

Timmermans Strawberry Lambic Its aroma evokes the perfumes of a lovely summer. Its strawberry flavour confirms the nose's impression without sweetened saturation. Moreover, it's even enhanced by a real feeling of freshness, recalling those tiny green granules that are found around ripened strawberries. Its taste is consistent and spreads very quickly throughout the mouth to finish its journey on a touch that is fruitier rather than sweetened.

Blanche De Bruxelles - Smooth yet grainy, sweetish with hints of apple and ginger. Witbier is a very old type of beer, a speciality of the farm-breweries of old Brabant. The master brewers used their very best crops to make this beer. Blanche de Bruxelles owes its natural cloudiness to the large percentage (40%) of wheat that goes into its composition. The natural spice aromas of coriander and bitter orange peels are added during the brewing process. The brewing method, which includes infusion, is very slow. The beer, which is not filtered, is bottled and refermented with yeast and brewing sugar. You need only take a sip of this delicious drink to appreciate the fresh and mellow flavour with its hint of orange. It is really not like any other beer.

Cisco
VICTORY BREWING

Moonglow Weizenbock  - This dark amber wheat beer features fruity and spicy aromas galore. Significant strength underlies the pleasant citric appeal of this bock beer. Redolent with the flavors of harvest fruit, Moonglow typifies the traditional weizenbock-style so thoroughly enjoyed throughout Bavaria. Left unfiltered, its unique yeast strain gives Moonglow a radiance all its own.

Midnight Project
LEFT HAND AND TERRAPIN

Midnight Project #3 Oxymoron  - Sometime around midnight in a city nobody can agree on, the idea for Left Hand and Terrapin to brew a collaboration beer was born. Oxymoron is the third in the series of one-time releases between the two breweries. A combination of contradictions embodied in liquid form. Oxymoron is an American-style IPA brewed with three German malts, six German hops varieties, and a lager yeast strain. Obnoxious yet reserved elevated yet modest, it's the embodiment of blending two brewing philosophies together in order to achieve singularity. Consider it an expression of cruel kindness". Look for it next week

Terrapin
TERRAPIN BEER

So Fresh and So Green, Green- Amarillo hop goodness is what this beer is all about! Twelve thirty pound boxes of Amarillo flown in overnight from the Yakima Valley in Washington State...to be exact. This is a beer that celebrates the hop! Made with freshly picked, whole leaf, "wet hops" these off the vine beauties will encourage you to drink fresh, drink local and drink now!

Cisco
CISCO BREWERS

Whale's Tale Pale Ale An amber English-style ale that has a nice balance between hops and malt. It's the most popular of Cusco's beers and the most versatile in terms of pairing with food or people.

If you're not familiar with Nantucket history, you'll be interested to know that this tiny island was once the Whaling Capital of the World. Knowing a bit of the history of a place can really help put life in perspective, and Cisco likes to encourage people to spend part of their time visiting the Whaling Museum, the Oldest House, and the windmill. Calling their beer "Whale's Tale" is a little tribute to the whaling era and a way to say hey, whales are people too! Let's appreciate their contribution to Nantucket's prosperity.

Sankaty Light- Sankaty Light is a brand new American Golden Ale. This delicious creation is light-bodied with tremendous balance and distinct hop character. At 3.8% alcohol and 128 calories this light beer has true flavor and body while being easy to drink and easier on the waistline.

It is named after the famous lighthouse that has stood on a bluff on the south eastern side of Nantucket Island since 1849. Perched precariously 88 feet above the raging Atlantic Ocean, Sankaty Head Light is in danger of falling prey to beach erosion. The lighthouse is the most powerful in New England.

Beer Thieves, Beware: The Wrong Way to Get a Free Drink
From Beer Universe

It's easy to make friends at a bar.  Beer Universe even has a Bar Tab feature that allows you - out of gratitude to someone on the site who has steered you in a properly hoppy direction or, perhaps, opened your eyes to a new style - to "owe someone a beer."  Unfortunately, it's a symbolic gesture only.  We want you to be able to express yourself as you might at your local watering hole, but state commerce laws prevent us helping you follow through with the gift.  We hope you do occasionally direct a beer in someone else's direction when you're out - you'll be amazed at the goodwill it engenders - but there is one type of beer tab we hope you never run up, and it doesn't come from being overly generous.

It comes from greed, specifically in the form of somehow allowing yourself to be convinced that stealing beer is a good idea.  It's not!!  Still, beer theft keeps showing up in the news, over and over again:

  • This March, three men ran out of a Seattle-area Safeway with a few cases of beer, running over a 74-year-old woman and causing a serious head injury in the process.
  • From mid-April to mid-May, a family network of beer thieves raided $7,000 worth of 30-packs from Circle K convenience stations in Tempe, Arizona, before being caught.
  • Salem, Massachusetts, nearly fell prey to the same crime just after 2 AM one night in mid-August but was assisted in recovering the beer and capturing the underage thieves by local policemen.
  • A man in Brooklyn, New York, got so upset last week at the rising cost of beer in a Marlboro Mini-Mart that he tried to start a fight with employees and broke a plastic partition.
  • Also just last week, two men broke the glass windows of a Dalton, Georgia, liquor store and proceeded to steal beer and cigars around 4 o'clock in the morning.

Calories in Beer: Can We Please Stop?

By Jay Brooks

This is one of those things that just drives me crazy: diet beer, low-calorie beer, low carbohydrate beer. That these things are so popular defies logic and common sense and is one of the best examples of just how effective advertising and marketing can be. In today's Daily Beast there's yet another list of the unhealthiest beers called the 50 Most Fattening Beers.

Here was their rationale. "The Daily Beast decided to determine which beers may not be the best for the buzz. Specifically, the beers were ranked based on which packed the most calories and carbohydrates for the least amount of alcoholic punch." More particularly:

To ensure a wide range of beers were considered, we looked at the offerings of the largest 15 domestic breweries and the largest five international breweries based on import volume to the U.S. Our final list was whittled further so that no more than three variations of brews from a single brand of beer was included in the top 50. We used data from the manufacturers when available, using reliable third party databases if necessary.

So they went through this complicated process and applied some weird calculation that took into account calories, carbohydrates and alcohol content to tell you what beers you shouldn't drink. Why? The calculations, as far as I can tell, seems to actually discourage drinking low-alcohol beers just because their caloric content is the same or more than other higher alcoholic beers. Hemp + Beer

Until about 10 years ago, there were quite a few beers made with hemp available in the US. Then TTB/ATF put out a policy and also said:

On April 6, 2000, ATF issued a policy on the use of hemp or hemp components in alcohol beverages and on the use of the term "hemp" or depictions of the hemp plant on labels for alcohol beverages. The policy does not ban the use of hemp in alcohol beverages, but was created to assure that beverage alcohol products do not contain a controlled substance (tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)). ATF also determined that the appearance of the word "hemp" or depictions of hemp plants on labels was likely to create a misleading impression as to the true identity or quality of the product. As of this writing, there are no approved certificates of label approval for products containing hemp.

Slowly but surely, however, in recent months various beers with hemp are starting to re-emerge and three of them are highlighted in this post. For the uninitiated, hemp happens to be a member of the cannabaceae family, a cousin of hops and close kin of marijuana (or cannabis).  O'Fallon's Hemp Hop Rye, an amber ale brewed with hemp seeds and approved earlier this year. The label mentions the hemp, and has a little picture of the hops and rye - but the hemp or hemp seed imagery seemed to be missing. According to a St. Louis Riverfront Times review the product "contains three kinds of malted barley, two types of rye, three varieties of hops and toasted hemp seed." TTB applied several hemp-specific qualifications to this and the other hemp approvals. For full article
