It's that time of year again. A time we here at Fresh Beer enjoy celebrating as the end of Summer. "It's 110 degrees in the shade!" you say. "How could it be the end of summer?" Well, in the beer world seasons move a little faster than the weather. So get your Shipyard Summer, your Magic Hat Summer Scene, your Victory Sunrise Weissbier and all the other great Summer beers now because next week is the start of Fall. The big daddy of them all will be in the house starting next week. That's right Shipyard Pumpkinhead is on a truck as I write this... chilling at a comfortable 37 degrees F as it makes it's way down I-95. I can almost smell those Pumpkin spices now. And Smashed Pumpkin is on that truck too! Left Hand Oktoberfest...is already in da' house and on some shelves! Penn Oktoberfest...coming shortly! Dogfish Punkin...will be hittin' in a few weeks. Ayinger Oktoberfest...bottles and DRAFT available next week! Magic Hat Hex launches in September along with their great mixed packs...Night of the Living Dead. So kiss the Summer good-bye, stock up on the last of your favorite Summer beers and start looking forward to cooler weather and delicious Fall beers.
Cheers,
Adam Fine

New Arrivals:
SHINER BEERS
Oktoberfest - In Shiner, TX (pop. 2,070), They're suckers for tradition. Which is why this classic Oktoberfest brew is made with the highest quality two-row barley, Munich and caramel malts, along with German grown Hallertau Tradition and Hersbrucker hops. It's Shiner's way of honoring their ancestors and the beer they loved to celebrate with. So raise your stein to tradition and enjoy this utterly classic brew.
Festbier - Gordon Biersch FestBier celebrates fall and the flavor profiles of beers served at the modern day Oktoberfest. Originally, the Oktoberfest was held in the middle of October. The brewers were motivated to increase beer sales and moved the date to the last week of September through the first week of October. At the same time, they created the modern day Oktoberfest beer with a lighter body than Märzen with a more robust, hoppy flavor. The maltiness is created via a combination of dark-roasted Munich malt and pilsner malt. The hoppy aroma is achieved via the imported Hallertau and Tettnang aroma hops.
DOGFISH HEAD BREWING COMPANY
My Antonia - My Antonia started out as a Collaboration beer when Sam brewed it at Birra Di Borgo (hope you can read Italian) outside Rome, Italy with owner/brewer Leonardo DiVencenzo in October of 2008. In 2010, they began brewing My Antonia at Dogfish Head brewery in Delaware for U.S. distribution.
My Antonia (named after the Willa Cather read), is a continually-hopped imperial pilsner. This original 2008 batch was brewed and distributed by Birra del Borgo. A small quantity was sent over to the United States.
SOUTHERN TIER BREWING COMPANY
imperial crème brûlée stout "a stout of great contention"
Southern Tier is not the harbinger of truth as some may suggest but it may indeed be argued that their brewing philosophy is tantamount to a dessert with a bellicose past. How, you may ask, would a brewery determine a likeness to hard-coated custard? Their response is simple; it's all in the power of history, and of course, the extra finesse needed to top off a contentious treat with definition.
By comprehending the labyrinthine movement of time, one would not think it strange to trace the errant path of an ordinary object such as a cream dessert only to discover that it has been the cause of cultural disputes since the middle ages. The British founders of burnt cream and from Spain, crema catalana, both stand by their creative originality and they respect that, but it was the French Crème Brûlée, amid the strife of contention, that survived to represent Southern Tier's deliciously creamy brew. 9.2% abv
2xipa "4 types of hops, 3 types of barley" Not quite an imperial, but certainly not a standard India pale ale. Our double IPA is a hop lovers dream. Citrusy and clean with an incredible finish. 8.2% abv
Other returning favorites hitting the shelves:
Shipyard Pumpkinhead, Pugsley Series Smashed Pumpkin, Left Hand Oktoberfest, Dogfish Head Theobroma. Keep an eye out for some specialty imports that will be hitting the shelves...very limited offerings from Cantillion, Nogne, Achel and Jolly Pumpkin will be available at some of your specialty beer geek accounts.
Coming Soon: The Bruery Coton, Victory Moonglow Weizenbock, Ayinger Weizenbock, Magic Hat Hex, Magic Hat Night of the Living Dead, Cigar City Humidor IPA and Cigar City 12 oz. Jai Alai IPA |
Blue Point Brews "Toxic Sludge" to help Feathered Friends Flying South
Long Island, NY (August 3, 2010) - As American's attention spans for the Deep Water Horizon oil spill begin to wane, Blue Point Brewing Company today announced a batch of charity brew created specifically to help birds hurt by oil spills, both now and in the future. The Black IPA (India Pale Ale) called Toxic Sludge will be available for distribution in draft and 22 oz bottles just in time for fall migration.
Blue Point will donate 100% of net proceeds from Toxic Sludge to Delaware-based Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research to fund their Spreading Our Wings Campaign and long term efforts to build a Wildlife Response Annex.
To help jumpstart fundraising efforts, starting August 3rd, "Save the Buffleheads" T-shirts are being sold online for $25 at www.bptoxicsludge.com. The smallest diving duck in North America, the Bufflehead breeds in Canada and winters off the Gulf Coast. For full article |
Why Is PBR $44 Per Bottle in China?
Everyone who's been to college is familiar with Pabst Blue Ribbon, better known as PBR, the ultra-cheap beer just slightly more flavorful than water and about the same price. Now the beer is being introduced to the Chinese market with a slightly different branding strategy. There, "it's called Pabst Blue Ribbon 1844 and will run you $44 a bottle," Time's Megan Gibson Reports.
In China, where the lager has been branded as a "world-famous spirit" and bottled in a much more alluring way, Pabst Blue Ribbon 1844 actually looks quite enticing. The advertising campaign for the beer even likens it to "Scotch whisky, French brandy, Bordeaux wine," as they are all matured in wooden casks. The New Yorker's China-based Evan Osnos explains the culture behind the pricey PBR:
This is not the first time that P.B.R. has reinvented itself over the years. Since it got its start in the nineteenth century, it has pitched itself in various ways to workers, families, and sports fans--as this good roundup shows. But now, it seems, that a clever Chinese distributor has snatched up the license knowing full well about the Chinese fondness for trophies and ribbons. (See: Olympics, 2008). Alcohol, as I described in a piece on China's love affair with wine, has become a prime tool for conspicuous consumption. And "Blue Ribbon 1844," as its Chinese site assures us has winner written all over it.
The New Republic's Jonathan chait has an ida: "Can't somebody arbitrage that? What's stopping you from buying a whole bunch of PBR here in the U.S., shipping it to China and reselling it for $22 a bottle?" for original article. |
Once You Pop Introducing the Beer Popsicle
Take a can of beer.
Lift tab, tilt back, consume, repeat.
A well-worn formula, easily mastered. Yet in these dangerous times, we feel it may be necessary to unmaster it.
Warning: this involves a samurai sword.
Introducing The Hopsicle Experience, a frozen can of beer, sliced in half and served like a Push Pop for big kids, launching at Diablo Royal Este, in New York City Now, the thing about the hopsicle is that it looks like your standard can of Tecate: Red. Cylindrical. Icy cold. Except the barman-witchdoctors at Diablo have taken the "icy" bit quite literally, injecting the beer with simple syrup and lime juice, jamming a wooden stick into the hole of the can and then putting it in the freezer. For four days.
The result is a genuine beer popsicle, which the bartender must saw in half with a serrated steak knife (or samurai sword) to open. Then it's up to you to push the wooden stick upward to dispense the hopsicle in true Push Pop style, and decide if you want your savory sweet frozen joyride bathed in tequila as well (note: you want this).
