Adam FineMost people look at my job in envy and think I have the best job in the world.  They have overblown ideas of us spending hours in accounts drinking beer and carousing with our fellow employees all while selling some of the best beers in the country. As with any job, some of these ideas couldn't be further from the truth.  Little do most people realize the endless hours (this is a 24/7 industry...no holidays for us), the heavy lifting (yes beer is heavy) and the constant threat of competition (take a careful look at the beer cooler sometime and tell me if there is an industry with more competition).  Then there is just about every type of person that you can imagine from the brewery reps, to the retail owners, the chain buyers, the bar owners and patrons.  It can be a very trying job at times.  But in the end,  I have to admit there are certain fringe benefits that make the long hours worth it.

Take this past weekend for example.  I had circumstance play in my favor when Native Lager was "auditioned" to be on a new show on A&E called "The Glades" which is being filmed right in South Florida.  Luck played out when the pilot episode contained a great shot of Native lager being quaffed by the two stars of the show.  And the scene didn't even wind up on the cutting room floor.  Wow that is pretty exciting!!  But even more fun played out when we were invited to the premier party and got to rub elbows with some of the stars of the show.  Talk about a Hollywood experience...just short of the red carpet (it was blue).  So I guess in the end,  this is a pretty good job....at least it isn't boring.

If you want to check out the show go to A&E's website at for the latest repeat showtimes. And keep watching the show, it airs at 10 PM every Sunday night.   I've been told that Native Lager is going to be the lead character's beer of choice!

You can also catch a couple of the stills from the show at our facebook page.

Cheers,

New Arrivals:

Blue Point
BLUE POINT BREWING COMPANY

Toasted Lager - Blue Point Brewing's Toasted Lager is the flagship product. Copper in color this brew is made from Six different malts including: English Pale, Crystal, Munich, Carapils, Wheat and Belgian Caravienna. Toasted Lager displays a balanced flavor of malt and hop which makes it easy drinking. Special lager yeast is used to produce that long lasting, smooth finish. The "toasted" part of the name refers to Blue Point's direct-fire brew kettle; hot flames imparts a toasted flavor to their most popular microbrew.

RastafaRye - Blue Point Brewing Company humbly honors the Rastafari and dedicates this beer to them. Their RastafaRye Ale marries a hearty rye malt with a blend of freshly harvested west coast hops resulting in a delicious deep copper ale, with just the right amount of rye flavor to offset the spicy and floral characteristics of the hops, RastafaRye will stay on your palate and your mind evermore.

Hoptical Illusion IPA - This IPA won the Bronze Medal at The 2005 Great American Beer Festival. It was also named the best IPA at The 2005 United States Beer Tasting Championship. This classic American style IPA features a rare hop exclusively grown on a farm in Oregon. One taste of the Hoptical Illusion and you'll know why Blue Point bought the entire crop. A generous amount of the select hop balances out malty backbone of this delicious golden beer.

Cigar City

CIGAR CITY BREWING

Guava Grove - is a Belgian ale that sees a secondary fermentation with and extended aging on Guava puree. The complex flavors imparted by both the Belgian yeast strain and the Guava are unlike anything you are likely to have encountered. This is an elegant beer that pairs well with white fish, mussels, fresh tropical fruits and earthy cheeses. It also makes a fine accompaniment to Guavaween festivities.

Stone
ROGUE BREWING COMPANY

Rogue Chatoe OREgasmic -  Rogue OREgasmic Ale is brewed with all First Growth Oregon hops and malt grown on Rogue's own micro hopyard and barley farm. OREgasmic Ale is the third Chatoe Rogue release, following Dirtoir Black Lager and Single Malt Ale. It is orange-amber in color, malty aroma, spicy fruity hop flavor with solid malt background and lingering finish. Brewed using 100% OREGON Ingredients. Micro Barley Farm first growth Dare™ & Risk™ Malts; Rogue Micro Hopyard Willamette & first growth Independent Hops, Pacman Yeast and Free Range Coastal Water.

Stone
STONE BREWING COMPANY

14th Anniversary Empirical Pale Ale  - This beer pours golden with a creamy head of foam. It is very pale in color, with a slight haze.

The aroma is strongly hoppy, a blend of peaches, light citrus and earthy/herbal flavors. It's a bit of a departure from the classic American citrusy and piney IPA hop profile, but it is unmistakably hoppy.

Upon tasting, the classic pale malt character becomes apparent with a touch of sweetness and a light biscuity flavor, yet this beer remains incredibly hop focused. Resiny, fruit flavored hops dominate the palate upfront and through the middle. Yeast esters are blended into the flavor mix in the middle palate, and the beer finishes very bitter and dry, with just a tiny hint of sulfur.

Stone's 14th Anniversary Emperial IPA may defy today's expectations of a British inspired IPA. It's not a "maltier" IPA, and no crystal malts were used in the brewing of this beer. British brewers in the 1800's made their IPA's as light in color and as dry as possible, and that was their inspiration. And though we still like to encourage everyone to drink stone IPA's fresh, this one may be interesting to age. Especially on a 6 month long ocean voyage

Southern Tier
SOUTHERN TIER BREWING COMPANY

Farmer's Tan Imperial Pale Lager "the hallmark of hard work" - neolithic humans evolved from nomadic hunters into a more settled agricultural society, changing life forever. The 'founder' crops they raised included wheat & barley. It is little surprise that the first examples of brewing appeared during this age.

Brewers owe much to that epoch. Similarly, Southern Tier thanks their farmer friends of today for cultivating the ingredients that are responsible for the beers we now enjoy. Their laborious days spent outdoors under the hot sun earn them respect, as well as a mark of distinction: the farmer's tan. Yes, the inevitable red & white hallmark of hard work. So, roll up your sleeves and turn the soil. Just be sure to chill a bottle of Farmer's Tan to enjoy after work. 9.0% abv

Avery
AVERY BREWING COMPANY

Seventeen Dry-Hopped Black Lager - After years of commemorating their anniversary with deliciously wild and weird ales, they decided to mix it up a bit and create their first Anniversary lager. SEVENTEEN is a celebration and study of the aromas and flavors of German hops. And knowing their fetish for those beautiful green cones, you can be confident that the contents of this bottle are well hopped for your olfactory pleasure.  Many thanks to all and we hope you enjoy Avery's lupulin dissertation

Cleveland Brewery To Make LeBron Beer, "Quitness"
It seems since "The Decision", you cannot turn on a television or radio without hearing debate about what LeBron James did when he decided to leave Cleveland for the Miami Heat.  In the sports world, this is a huge, national situation and they are reminding you of that constantly.  This situation has become personal for the people and businesses of Cleveland because of the possible economic ramifications, and the anger has boiled over.  In retaliation, local businesses have gotten behind their team and turned their back on LeBron with a number of different anti-LeBron marketing campaigns.  As cleveland.com reports, the campaign could be as simple as giving up a jersey for a free beer at a local pub, getting a $23 discount for computer services in exchange for a LeBron tshirt, or brewing a commemorative beer marking LeBron's departure from Cleveland.

This is what Great Lakes Brewing Company is doing.  They are marking LeBron's absence by brewing a beer to commemorate such a tragic event because that's what Great Lakes Brewing does.  As Pat Conway, co-owner of Great Lakes Brewing, told cleveland.com "We're all about catastrophes and sinking ships over here".  Conway is referring to the fact that Great Lakes has named beers after the burning of the Cuyahoga River (Burning River Pale Ale) and the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald when several people from Ohio aboard were killed (Edmund Fitzgerald Porter).  So, with possible economic destruction looming for Cleveland due to LeBron's leaving, it seems only fitting that Great Lakes name a beer after this event.  The beer shall be named Quitness, a play on LeBron's Nike "Witness" campaign.  No real news about what the beer will be exactly, but it will be an extremely bitter ale. For Full Article
Drunk man takes on Fatso the crocodile
A drunk man who broke into a wildlife park and sat atop a five-metre saltwater crocodile, named Fatso, had earlier tried patting a neighbouring female croc.

The 36-year-old man, who had been turfed out of a Broome tavern for being drunk, told police he climbed into Fatso's enclosure at a crocodile park, owned by well-known bushman Malcolm Douglas, because he wanted to give him a pat.

"He made his way into the crocodile park and then climbed into the compound with a large, male five-metre saltwater croc named Fatso," Sergeant Roger Haynes said.

He has attempted to sit on its back and the croc has taken offence to that and has spun around and bit him on the right leg.

"For an unknown reason, the crocodile has let him go and he's managed to scale the fence and exit the park." For Full Article and Video

Gruit, or Brewing Without Hops
Gruit is a drink from olden times, a drink much like beer, but made without the use of hops. Instead of hops, bittering herbs of different varieties were used, and there is evidence to support the idea that beer without hops is a different and livelier experience on many levels. Gruit was swept under the rug when beer purity laws ravaged the brewers of Europe in the 1500s, but is now making a revival.

Before the beer purity laws which swept Europe in the 1500s, beer was made with many different admixtures, and Gruit was one variety which was popular. Recipes for gruit were different depending on which herbs grew locally. According to Gruitale.com gruit usually included the following herbs: Yarrow (Achillea millefolium), Bog Myrtle (Myrica Gale), and Marsh Rosemary (Ledum palustre). This claim is also supported by the book Sacred & Healing Herbal Beers, by Stephen Harrod Buhner. This book contains many ancient recipes for beer, including a section on gruit. Additional herbs which have been found in gruit recipes are Juniper berries, Mugwort, Wormwood, Labrador Tea, Heather, Licorice, and some others.

There are a few factors to consider when comparing the inebriatory qualities of gruit in comparison to more commonly made beer. For Full Article
