July 4th....a Celebration of American Independence. Our forefathers, you know...the guys in the white wigs...left the Old World on a search for a place where they could live independently and explore. As we know, the initial Pilgrims had to land at Plymouth Rock early because they ran out of beer on their ship. We also know that some of the important figures in our history: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin were brewers themselves as well as beer drinkers. They weren't brewing or drinking light lager back then either.
So how should we celebrate this day of independence? We should be enjoying beers created from the exact philosophy that this country was founded on....independence thought, creative freedom and the rights to live and pursue happiness. So grab a few of great craft beers and enjoy the fruits of the brewers independent and creative abilities that might not have been available had this great country not been founded. And be careful when you are drinking and lighting off fireworks!
Cheers,
Adam Fine

New Arrivals:
STONE BREWING COMPANY
14th Anniversary Empirical Pale Ale - Stone went to England this past spring as self-styled "IPA Hunters" on a mission to learn more about the confusing and often contradictory history of India Pale Ale - to look for some certainty where those before them have found mostly mystery and mercantilism. While their success in this pursuit is open to debate, there can be no question that they returned home inspired by the ghosts of Burton and by the experience of poring over 150-year old brewer's logs handwritten in (India?) ink. Stone Brewing Co., after all, traces its lineage back to the British Empire's brewing history: they make ales, and all of their original offerings used traditional British styles as a jumping-off point. If this seems a roundabout way of letting you know that, yes, they are in fact brewing another IPA to mark our Anniversary, well, so be it.
This one however, promises to be different! From the imported white malt to the "Burtonised" water to the rare yeast strain to the most pungent hops Kent has to offer, they sed all British ingredients to brew the Emperial" IPA.* While they may have brewed Stone 14th Anniversary Emperial IPA with their own distinctively modern, San Diego-style touch, what good is history if you can't rewrite it to suit your tastes?
In this case, our tastes called for highly intemperate quantities of Target, East Kent Goldings, and Boadicea hops, bestowing upon this dry-bodied ale a powerfully spicy, earthy aroma. On the palate, peppery hops assert themselves early and often, with malt sweetness making a brief appearance before being beaten back by a long, complex, and decisively bitter finish. What better way to contemplate the fate of empires past, present, and future?
SOUTHERN TIER BREWING COMPANY
Farmer's Tan Imperial Pale Lager "the hallmark of hard work" - neolithic humans evolved from nomadic hunters into a more settled agricultural society, changing life forever. The 'founder' crops they raised included wheat & barley. It is little surprise that the first examples of brewing appeared during this age.
Brewers owe much to that epoch. Similarly, Southern Tier thanks their farmer friends of today for cultivating the ingredients that are responsible for the beers we now enjoy. Their laborious days spent outdoors under the hot sun earn them respect, as well as a mark of distinction: the farmer's tan. Yes, the inevitable red & white hallmark of hard work. So, roll up your sleeves and turn the soil. Just be sure to chill a bottle of Farmer's Tan to enjoy after work. 9.0% abv
Seventeen Dry-Hopped Black Lager - After years of commemorating their anniversary with deliciously wild and weird ales, they decided to mix it up a bit and create their first Anniversary lager. SEVENTEEN is a celebration and study of the aromas and flavors of German hops. And knowing their fetish for those beautiful green cones, you can be confident that the contents of this bottle are well hopped for your olfactory pleasure. Many thanks to all and we hope you enjoy Avery's lupulin dissertation

CIGAR CITY BREWING COMPANY
110k+ OT Batch #3 (The Other West Coast IPA) - Cigar City flexes ther muscles with this series. Each release features a completely new over the top, braggadocios brew which is brewed only once. Batch #3 is a Double IPA dubbed "The Other West Coast IPA."
Other returning favorites hitting the shelves:
Dogfish Head Sahtea, Avery Maharaja, Rogue XS YSB and Red (Now in 7oz. Bottles), Shipyard Pugsley Series XXXX IPA (Now in 12 oz. bottles/4 packs) Terrapin Gamma Ray, Dogfish Festina Peche and Rogue Somer Orange Honey Ale

(Silver Spring, MD) - Beer is the drink of the masses. If you look into a glass of beer you can see the past, present and future of mankind. Cicero lauded it, Genghis Khan fought for it and now Discovery Channel celebrates it with a world premiere series, BREWED, exploring the culture, history and variety of beer.
Meet Sam Calagione: maverick entrepreneur, family man and owner of Dogfish Head Brewery in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. As an ambassador to the world of craft beer, Sam travels the world to experience what every culture brings to its own special brew.
In BREWED, Sam shows viewers the other side of the bottle, sharing the stories of beer sub-cultures as well as exploring life inside The Dogfish Head Brewery. BREWED goes behind the scenes at Dogfish Head as Sam's merry band of creative brewmasters concoct new taste varieties. For Full Article |
Prime Minister treats Obama to a Witney brew
The (UK) Prime Minister has delivered a beer brewed in his Witney constituency to Barack Obama after the two made a football World Cup bet. David Cameron and the US President exchanged beers from their native countries after a wager on the outcome of the England v USA group match.
As the game ended in a draw, they each brought a beer when they met in Toronto for the G20 summit at the weekend. Mr Cameron chose Hobgoblin beer, made by the Wychwood Brewery, in The Crofts, Witney, while Mr Obama presented Mr Cameron with Goose Island 312, from his home town of Chicago.
Ian Ward, Wychwood Brewery marketing manager, said: "It's great that David Cameron thought Hobgoblin was a sociable beer, we don't just share Hobgoblin with anybody. It's good that there is the potential for a special relationship."
The Prime Minister visited the Witney brewery, which also makes King Goblin and Scaregrow, during his election campaign in May. For Original Article |
Rogue Nation Breaks Ground on Floor Malting Facility
TYGH VALLEY, OR, June 28, 2010 - The Rogue Nation Department of Agriculture has broken ground on the Rogue Malt Floor located on the Rogue Micro Barley Farm in Oregon's Tygh Valley Appellation.
The Malt Floor will be a Heritage-malting operation in which Rogue Farm barley will be soaked, floor-germinated, hand-raked on the malt floor, roasted in a brick hearth, and bagged in small batches. Rogue Brewmaster John Maier plans on developing 4-6 varieties of floor malt that will be used in the brewing and distilling of Rogue Ales, Porters, Stouts, Lagers, and Whiskies.
Floor malting began in the 19th century but was gradually replaced by automated equipment that helped reduce labor costs. With the establishment of the malt floor, Rogue joins a select handful of floor maltsters in Germany, England, and the Czech Republic that continue to carry on the heritage malting method.
The Malt Floor will be complete and operational in August -- in time for the Rogue Farm barley harvest. Complimentary tours of the Malt Floor will be provided and will also include tours of Rogue rock, Rogue-henge, Rogue creek, and the Rogue fishing pond.
The Rogue Nation Department of Agriculture remains committed to saving the terroir of Oregon hops and barley, one acre at a time, by growing its own.
For more information on the Rogue Malt Floor, Farm tours, or Rogue's Grow Your Own revolution, contact the Rogue Department of Agriculture at 503.241.3800. For Original Article |
Sour Beer Is Risky Business, Starting With the Name
Brewers of barrel-aged sour beer take risks and practice patience. They wait as long as three years to see whether the cloudy liquids resting in oak ripen into shades of gold or raspberry and develop the ideal tart, tangy flavors, or become undrinkable, ravaged by aggressive yeasts. It's an expensive gamble.
And even if they succeed, they may still have to persuade people to drink them.
"We still get customers who call to let us know a bottle of our barrel-aged beer had gone bad because it tasted sour," said Vinnie Cilurzo, owner of Russian River Brewing Company in Santa Rosa, Calif. "Sour beers will never become the pale ales of craft brewing." But for the brewers of sour beer, and its fans, the wait is worth it.
