Well it seems the Dog Days of Summer are upon us. Fortunately, we at least have some entertainment to enjoy in the comfort of A/C this year....the World Cup. No matter what country you are from be it somewhere in South America, Europe, Asia or even Africa...there is a bar out there serving up some great American Craft Beer for you to enjoy with your match. The best beer in the world paired up with the best "football" in the world! And even if you can't find a great restaurant or bar to stop by....you can certainly pickup a six or more of some of the great Summer Seasonal beers that we have out there...Magic Hat Wacko, Shipyard Summer, Festina Peche, Saranac Summer Brew, Gordon Biersch Sommerbrau, Victory Sunrise Weisse, Southern Tier Hopsun...the list goes on and on. Don't miss out on some of the great Summer Mixer 12 packs either such as the Magic Hat Summer Scene or the Saranac Summer Mixer. So enjoy the footie and make sure to enjoy a nice cold Summer beer to take the edge off the sweltering 95 F (feels like 150 F) that you are avoiding. Cheers,
Adam Fine

New Arrivals:
SOUTHERN TIER BREWING COMPANY
Mokah - "a blend of choklat & jahva stout" When empirical and creative impulses collide, the result is often timeless. The classic utility-art aesthetic of the coffee maker is an example of design and engineering working in concert. It is through similar cooperation that the simple bitter cocoa bean is transformed into a sweet treat. As scientists, our brewers utilize their materials to exacting standards. As artists, they couldn't resist the temptation to combine two of our highly acclaimed Blackwater Series Imperial Stouts: Jahva and Choklat. Alone each is perfect, but together as Mokah they are an inimitable expression of two of the world's most sought after flavors. Enjoy Mokah stout with - or as - your favorite dessert!
Pale - "3 types of hops & 3 types of malts" Southern Tier's Pale is an aggressively hopped, with immense overtones of grapefruit and tangerine wrapped in a delicately refined body of pale barley and wheat.
TERRAPIN BREWING COMPANY
Side Project 11: Boom Shakalager - Volume 11 in Terrapin's Side Project Series of beers is The Terrapin Boom Shakalager! This out of the box Imperial Lager weighs in at a hefty 9.0% ABV. Handcrafted with all German malts, hops and yeast it has an aggressive flavor that will wind most anyone's Cuckoo clock. This amber elixir has an aggressive balance of sweetness and bitterness that is complemented by a bombardment of citrus from dry hopping with German Tettnanger hops.
CIGAR CITY BREWING COMPANY
110k+ OT Batch #3 (The Other West Coast IPA) - Cigar City flexes ther muscles with this series. Each release features a completely new over the top, braggadocios brew which is brewed only once. Batch #3 is a Double IPA dubbed "The Other West Coast IPA."
GORDON BIERSCH BREWING COMPANY
Märzen - Märzen (Mayrt-zen) was historically brewed in Bavaria from March through the end of October. It was brewed dark and strong, using dark roasted Munich and caramelized Munich malt to help cover up flavor changes from the lack of refrigeration (ice in those days) used to keep the beers cold in the cellars during the warm summer months. Gordon Biersch Märzen accentuates the flavors of the dark roasted imported malted barley and exhibits a caramel malt aftertaste, while downplaying the hop level.
Blonde Bock - Bock beers are represented by a male goat, which in German lore symbolizes strength and virility. In accordance with the Reinheitsgebot (German Purity Law of 1516), bock beers must have a pre-fermentation malt sugar concentration of 16.5%, which converts over to at least 7% alcohol after fermentation. These strong beers were made popular in the early 1600s by monks in order to minimize their hunger during fasting periods. While most bocks are dark, Blonde Bock is golden-colored and malty with a rich, creamy head. The rich flavor is counterbalanced with the just the right level of bitterness from the Hallertau aroma hops and create a very smooth profile.
SommerBrau - SommerBrau is a kölsch style beer. Kölsch literally means the beer of Cologne, Germany. This beer style is a light bodied beer fermented using a special top fermenting yeast strain, which we import specially from Germany, brewing it true to style. It is brewed with 80% pale-malted barley and 20% malted wheat. The pinpoint bitterness of the German Tettnang hops and crisp finish make this beer perfect for summertime enjoyment.
ROGUE
John John Juniper Pale Ale -In their second collaboration effort, Rogue Master Brewer, John Maier, and Master Distiller, John Couchot are releasing John John Juniper Pale Ale. This ale consists of Rogue Juniper Pale Ale aged in Rogue's Juniper Gin barrels. Gin lovers will recognize the oddity in this approach - gin is not typically aged in barrels. A hint of cucumber and a Sprucey note in the aroma followed by a Juniper bite mid palate finishing with a soft oakiness.
Other returning favorites hitting the shelves:
Terrapin Gamma Ray, Dogfish Festina Peche and Rogue Somer Orange Honey Ale
Coming Soon: Dogfish Head My Antonia, Sahtea and The Bruery Coton |
L.A. Beer Experts Mythbust 5 Complaints of Amateur Beer Drinkers
With the popularity of gastropubs and craft beer bars in our city, you can't just walk into a beer-serious bar and order a tall, cold one anymore. Now there are many factors to consider: glass, temperature, style, pour. Connoisseurs know this, but many mainstream drinkers don't. Beer experts Larry Caldwell, Father's Office Santa Monica general manager; Christina Perozzi, co-author of The Naked Pint and co-executive editor of TheBeerchicks.com; and Ryan Sweeney, owner of The Surly Goat and Verdugo Bar share five complaints they often hear that mark an amateur beer drinker and then why these complaints are so wrong.
1. "There's too much head on the beer." Caldwell: By pouring the beer with a bit of head, it's allowing the beer to release a lot more aromatics than if you poured it without. That is the biggest point I can make. When you are drinking a fine craft brew, you want to experience every bit of flavor you can, and to achieve that....you have to have some head on your beer.
Perozzi: The perfect beer for this example is the Belgian Golden Ale Duvel. This beer is supposed to be poured with at LEAST two inches of head. The bubbles carry the aromatics and provide the exact balance that the brewer intends. If all that carbonation remained in the beer, it would explode in your mouth, and not in a good way.
Sweeney: Getting beer with no head, although seems like you're getting a deal, is an indicator that the beer is either under carbonated, the beer lines pouring the beer are not clean, or the beer is infected in some way. Any of these three issues would mean you are not getting a good quality beer. For Full Article |
Share a 'Bowser Beer' with man's best friend
SCOTTSDALE, AZ - If you like doing just about anything with your dog, how about sharing a beer? Inside 'Oh My Dog' in Old Town Scottsdale, pooches get pampered. From hair cuts to a blow dry, they're each given a unique style. But the latest craze is to put a little party in your animal with something called Bowser Beer.
"We sell a lot of Bowser Beer," said Jacki Bacha, owner of 'Oh My Dog,' "It's just a really funny gesture, the dogs love it." In the store, dogs are seen throwing one back. But Valley creator, Jenny Brown said while it's a fun product, it has a serious message. "On the serious side, hops in real beer can be very toxic to dogs," said Brown. That's why Bowser Beer is non-alcoholic. Brown said it's high in protein, has a lot of vitamin b and glucosamine for joint health. For Full Article |
"These women, who have been part of a larger group, are suspected to be involved in organized acts to conduct unlawful commercial activities during the Denmark Netherlands match on Monday," South African police said in a statement on Wednesday.
The arrests come after FIFA questioned a group of 36 Dutch women who were watching the Netherlands play Denmark in Soccer City stadium on Monday in skimpy orange dresses. The dresses produced by family-owned Dutch brewer Bavaria caught the eye of experts on the lookout for ambush marketing campaigns.
Anheuser Busch's Budweiser is the official beer for the tournament and world soccer's governing body fiercely protects its sponsors from brands which are not FIFA partners.
FIFA has started legal proceedings against the Dutch brewer. For Full Article |
Sam Adams brewer may be outgrowing craft status
BOSTON - In a world where Nabisco sells "artisan" Wheat Thins, the designation of Samuel Adams as a craft beer seems perfectly fair.
But the Boston Beer Co., the brewery that was founded in 1984 and makes Sam Adams, is on the verge of outgrowing its coveted craft status - at least according to the Brewers Association, a national trade group that defines craft brewers in part as producing fewer than 2 million barrels a year.
The federal government defines small brewers similarly, imposing a lower excise tax on those that stay under the 2-million-barrel threshold.
Given that Boston Beer helped create the red-hot small-beer movement when it introduced Sam Adams, stripping it of craft credentials could prompt a lot of crying in ... well, you know.
"If we're not a craft brewer," said Jim Koch, president of Boston Beer, "what else are we? We're certainly not Budweiser." For Full Article |
