Buon Giorno, Fresh back from a great trip to Italy... the land of pasta, wine, cheese and craft beer! Yes, that's right a new renaissance is occurring in Italy....a beer renaissance. Our first stop in Milan brought us to Birrificio Lambrate, a great little brewpub in a suburb of Milan (if you can call it a suburb!?!). The place opened at 6 PM and by 6:10 it was PACKED. People were pouring out into the street and enjoying the great happy hour food that the Italians put out to satisfy the hunger of their crowd. Needless to say this wasn't chicken wings and mini hot dogs. Thinking this would be my only chance to enjoy craft beer on my trip...I indulged in wonderful IPA, Pilsner, Amber and Wheat styles they were brewing there...and was not disappointed by any style that the brewer attempted. If you can make it to this spot someday...I definitely recommend stopping in.
But wait, our next stop took us to the town of Santa Margherita and great little bed and breakfast style hotel. Upon having dinner in their restaurant, I discovered that the first three pages of their bible of a wine list were high end craft beers. All big bottles, I decided on a local IPA...Italian Pale Ale. My curiosity peaked by the selection I spent the evening talking (by way of the proprietor's wife as translator) about his passion for beer. He broke out several aged out beers from Italy's own "Sam Calagione"...Teo Musseo. He kept exclaiming...."This is not beer !" What a find to have a "Italian beer geek" as the proprietor of my hotel!
Our final stop took us to Bologna, an Italian college town, with a vibrant night life. Exploring the streets, we once again found a bar specializing in some local craft beer. Apparently, an Englishman had moved to Bologna and started a local micro. You could taste the English influence in his beer...not quite the American craft but many leagues ahead of the Italian standards...Peroni and Birra Moretti.
A great trip with loads of delicious food and wine, beautiful scenery, wonderful people, and yes, even some great beer along the way. Keep an eye on the Italians...something tells me they will start turning out some pretty good beers. They do just about everything else well there and it is just a matter of time.
Cheers,
Adam Fine

New Arrivals:
SOUTHERN TIER BREWING COMPANY
Mokah - "a blend of choklat & jahva stout" When empirical and creative impulses collide, the result is often timeless. The classic utility-art aesthetic of the coffee maker is an example of design and engineering working in concert. It is through similar cooperation that the simple bitter cocoa bean is transformed into a sweet treat. As scientists, our brewers utilize their materials to exacting standards. As artists, they couldn't resist the temptation to combine two of our highly acclaimed Blackwater Series Imperial Stouts: Jahva and Choklat. Alone each is perfect, but together as Mokah they are an inimitable expression of two of the world's most sought after flavors. Enjoy Mokah stout with - or as - your favorite dessert!
Pale - "3 types of hops & 3 types of malts" Our Pale is an aggressively hopped, with immense overtones of grapefruit and tangerine wrapped in a delicately refined body of pale barley and wheat.
GORDON BIERSH BREWING COMPANY
Märzen - Märzen (Mayrt-zen) was historically brewed in Bavaria from March through the end of October. It was brewed dark and strong, using dark roasted Munich and caramelized Munich malt to help cover up flavor changes from the lack of refrigeration (ice in those days) used to keep the beers cold in the cellars during the warm summer months. Gordon Biersch Märzen accentuates the flavors of the dark roasted imported malted barley and exhibits a caramel malt aftertaste, while downplaying the hop level.
Blonde Bock - Bock beers are represented by a male goat, which in German lore symbolizes strength and virility. In accordance with the Reinheitsgebot (German Purity Law of 1516), bock beers must have a pre-fermentation malt sugar concentration of 16.5%, which converts over to at least 7% alcohol after fermentation. These strong beers were made popular in the early 1600s by monks in order to minimize their hunger during fasting periods. While most bocks are dark, Blonde Bock is golden-colored and malty with a rich, creamy head. The rich flavor is counterbalanced with the just the right level of bitterness from the Hallertau aroma hops and create a very smooth profile.
SommerBrau - SommerBrau is a kölsch style beer. Kölsch literally means the beer of Cologne, Germany. This beer style is a light bodied beer fermented using a special top fermenting yeast strain, which we import specially from Germany, brewing it true to style. It is brewed with 80% pale-malted barley and 20% malted wheat. The pinpoint bitterness of the German Tettnang hops and crisp finish make this beer perfect for summertime enjoyment.
VICTORY BREWING COMPANY
Weissbeer - As invigorating as the morning rays of the summer sun, Sunrise Weissbier satisfies when the heat is on, too. This unfiltered, Bavarian style ale is true to its origins with all ingredients except for the water having been imported from Germany. It remains unfiltered to feature the tangy, fruity flavors of its unique yeast. The imported German malt contributes greatly to add a crisp, citric snap that makes this beer a superb summertime refresher.
SHIPYARD BREWING COMPANY
Wheat Ale -Shipyard Wheat Ale is a crisp, refreshing, American style wheat ale with a soft golden color and nice copper hue. This filtered wheat beer has 4.5% alcohol by volume and is made with 60% Malted Wheat and 30% Pale Ale Malt. There are touches of Light Munich and Caramunich Malts and a hint of Crystal Malt. This beer is subtly hopped with Glacier and Hallertau Hops and an exciting new aroma hop called 04-188. Grown in the Pacific Northwest, this experimental hop is a hybrid of Cascade and Fuggles and is also used in dry hopping to give this beer a pleasing, earthy aroma. "Shipyard Wheat Ale is a very intriguing beer."
BOULDER BEER
Cold Hop British-Style Ale - a unique ale with a rich golden hue, and the 7th release in our Looking Glass Series of specialty beers. Cold Hop's pleasantly fruity, floral hop aroma and earthy flavor perfectly balance the mild sweetness of the English grains, resulting in a refreshing yet high-gravity British-Style ale. Now coming in 6-packs!
ROGUE
John John Juniper Pale Ale -In their second collaboration effort, Rogue Master Brewer, John Maier, and Master Distiller, John Couchot are releasing John John Juniper Pale Ale. This ale consists of Rogue Juniper Pale Ale aged in Rogue's Juniper Gin barrels. Gin lovers will recognize the oddity in this approach - gin is not typically aged in barrels. A hint of cucumber and a Sprucey note in the aroma followed by a Juniper bite mid palate finishing with a soft oakiness.
Double Mocha Porter - A huge mouthful of malt and hops, with notes of bitter rich chocolate. This porter is the creme de la creme. Double Mocha Porter (previously XS Imperial Porter) is a new package for 2010. It was first brewed in July 2007 as a special product for the Oregon Brewer's Festival and is an Imperial version of Rogue's award winning Mocha Porter.
SHINER BEERS
Blonde - Blonde made its debut as the original recipe Kosmos Spoetzl brought to the "Little Brewery." A golden lager that pays sincere tribute to its Bohemian roots, Shiner Blonde carries a distinctive flavor followed by a satisfying, smooth finish. Although Shiner's Blonde owes its heritage to the German homeland, it represents the best of a true American lager. That's Shiner Blonde - red, white and brewed.
Smokehaus - Enjoy Shiner's Smokin' Sommer Bier! Brewed with pale malt that's been smoked with native mesquite in the backyard of the little brewery in Shiner, Texas (pop. 2,070), this refreshing Helles-style beer has a smoky flavor that goes great with all the flavors of summer.
SARANAC BREWING
Summer Brew- For nearly 100 years, Europeans have mixed lemonade and beer as a refreshing beverage during the summer months. Saranac continues this tradition with Saranac Summer Brew - A refreshing blend of lemonade and lager. Kick back, relax and enjoy!
Saranac 12 Beers of Summer - Pool parties, barbeques, fireworks, and Saranac 12 Beers of Summer. Everyone's favorite summer variety package is back for another successful season. Where else can you get six award winning beers in one great refreshing summer package?
PACKAGE INCLUDES: Saranac Pomegranate Wheat Saranac Belgian White Saranac Hefeweizen Saranac Golden Pilsener Saranac Summer Ale Saranac Kolsch

A Taste for Brews That Go to Extremes
As a life philosophy, it may not lead to wealth, happiness or old age, but for many American brewers today the motto printed on the bottle of Moylander Double I.P.A., from Moylan's, a West Coast brewer, is a guiding principle:
"If one is good, then two is better!"
Such is the ethos of extreme beers, an all-American genre in which brewers are engaged in a constant game of "Can you top this?" Whether using an inordinate amount of traditional ingredients like malt or hops, or adding flavorings undreamed of by Old World brewers, American brewers have created a signature style that beer enthusiasts seem both to love and hate.
In the last 30 years American brewers have produced exceptional versions of classic Old World styles, whether pale ales or Pilseners, porters or stouts. They've even resuscitated nearly extinct styles like India pale ale, now one of the more popular genres in the United States. But nothing has caught their imagination like going over the top. What's the Deal with Beer Head?
When you think of a beer, you imagine the cold liquid beverage with a frothy foam topping that helps fill out the rest of your glass. This "beer head" is a symbol that helps us differentiate beer from the various array of carbonated beverages. Beer head is inviting, it represents a freshly poured brew that is ready for your taste buds to go to work.
The texture of the foam can be rocky and voluminous, racing up the sides of the beer glass, or it can be smooth a creamy, similar to those found in stouts like Guinness. You will often find that some beers' head leaves rings around your glass marking each sip that you take, while others will leave spotty impressions less clearly defined.
Does beer head serve a purpose? Should we be judging good beer based on the frothy foam? Where does it come from? For full article |
Man Smashes Store Window, Steals One Can of Beer
A man who has been out of prison for about two years was picked up by police early Sunday, in Gainsville, Florida, for stealing one can of beer after smashing a $700 store window with a hammer.
Earthy Donell Mobley, 27, was arrested on charges of burglary and possession of burglary tools.
According to Gainesville Police Officer Michael H. Lynch, the break-in happened at the Park Place convenience store at 120 N.W. 38th Ave. at 4:10 a.m. Sunday. A surveillance camera captured the entire event, Lynch said. On the recording, a man could be seen smashing the front window with a hammer, then taking one can of 4 Loco beer before fleeing on a bicycle.
Lynch took a digital photo from the surveillance camera and asked area residents if they could identify the man in the image. At noon Sunday, Lynch said he went to Mobley's home and showed Mobley the photo.
Mobley "Identified himself to me and admitted to committing the burglary," Lynch wrote in Mobley's arrest report. Mobley also "Admitted to taking the hammer with him to commit the burglary and stated he threw it into a water-filled culvert behind his home after the burglary."
Mobley was booked into the Alachua County jail. For original article |
