Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they
are the most accessible and wisest of counsellors, and the most patient
of teachers.

Make Now, Bake Later . . .
Cupcakes & Small Bakes is chock-a-block with fabulous-sounding recipes, and
the Much Ado test kitchen has already given its seal of approval to some of
them. Besides being gorgeously tasty, this one offers the added benefit that
you can freeze the dough for months. Imagine producing a batch hot from the
oven at your next dinner party - how good is that?
Freezer Biscuits
Ingredients:
250g pack butter, softened; 200g/8oz brown soft sugar;
1 tsp vanilla extract;
2
large eggs;
200g/8oz self-raising flour;
140g/5oz oats;
50g/2oz chopped nuts
(try pecan nuts, hazelnuts or almonds);
50g/2oz desiccated coconut;
50g/2oz
raisins or mixed fruit.
1.
Beat the butter and sugar, then beat in the vanilla and the eggs, one at a
time. Stir in a pinch of salt, the flour and oats to make a stiff dough. Add
the nuts, coconut and dried fruit, and stir through.
2.
Tear off an A4-sized sheet of greaseproof paper. Spoon half the mix along the
middle of the sheet, then pull over one edge of paper and roll up until you get
a tight cylinder. Roll until smooth. Twist up the ends, then freeze for up to
three months. Repeat with the remaining mix.
3.
When ready to cook, preheat the oven to 180c/160c fan/gas 4, and unwrap the
frozen biscuit mix. Using a sharp knife, cut off rounds roughly 1/2cm wide. If
you have difficulty slicing through, dip the knife into a cup of hot water.
Space widely apart on a baking sheet, then bake for 15 minutes until golden
brown.
Cupcakes & Small Bakes is part of
the great
'Good Food 101' series. 4.99 at Much Ado.

April Supper Club: The Making of the Sussex Landscape (plus: a glimpse of of the future - maybe . . .)
|  Peter
is a historical geographer whose life and studies of the Sussex landscape have
encompassed a stint as chair of the Sussex Campaign to Protect Rural England; lecturing at the University of
Sussex; and writing numerous authoritative books on the area's history. His
latest offering, published by Snake River Press, is The
Shaping of the Sussex Landscape. How did Sussex get to
look like it does? Find out how the landscape has evolved, shaped by the ongoing
creation of nature's long, slow shift and by humanity's incessant tampering. Plus! E-readers (we are told) are the wave of the future; a way to read books on a portable computer screen. Is this an improvement on our beloved paper book? Are we really set for a seismic shift in how we read and enjoy books?
To explore these and other questions, we've invited a representative from Sony to discuss the cutting-edge e-book reader and its implications for the future
of books and reading. 6:30 for 7 on Wednesday, 28 April at
Deans Place Hotel. Tickets - 15, including a two-course meal; cash bar
available.
Tickets in advance from Deans Place; call 01323 870 248. |
Teatime Book Swap - Saturday 8th May
| Expect a bit of everything at Scott Pack's Book Swap - the first time this London-based author-centric event has travelled outside the city.
Scott,
a publisher with Harper Collins, will join a panel of authors on stage at
Alfriston's War Memorial Hall for an afternoon of chat, advice - and a chance
for you to trade a book you've read for one you haven't.
The
panel will be available to discuss any topic you care to mention, from the
naming of pets to the shaming of politicians - touching, perhaps, on books both
current and past.
But
the authors are only part of the story. Bring along a book that you don't want
to keep, and entice other audience members to trade for one of their volumes.
Doors open at 2:30 for 3pm, and the price of admission is sweet: Bake a
cake to share and you can join in free -- or pay 5 either in advance at
Much Ado or at the door.
And we'll serve refreshments, of course - the tea-time event will
include tea and cakes provided by you, the audience.
It all makes for a fun, relaxed afternoon of book swaps and
discussion.

Edifice Complex
| Work continues at Much Ado's new premises: The contractor has already whipped off the roof and whipped it back on, and bashed out the old windows and replaced them with identical new ones. So the barn is (mostly) safe against the April showers and squalls - and work continues apace.
