Supper Club: Behind the Scenes at Sky TV's Book Show
|
The Book Show, presented by Mariella Frostrup, is the UK's only
weekly television programme devoted to books of all kinds, ranging from
classics to comic books.
Supper Club on Wednesday, 31
March will featureThe Book Show
producer Anne Elletson, offering a behind-the-scenes peek at how TV and books
come together -- how they choose books and authors who appear for interviews,
how they cope with the challenges of making the printed word interesting in a
television world, and what we can expect from upcoming shows.
Anne will show some choice clips
from the show, to give us a flavour of the programme.
Of course, the evening will also
feature our usual melange of book chat, book giveaways and book news - making
it a great night out for anyone who loves books.
Supper Club will convene at
Deans Place Hotel in Alfriston on Wednesday, 31 March 2010, with doors opening
at 6:30 for 7pm serving.
Tickets cost just 15, and
include a two-course supper with coffee; a cash bar is available.
Purchase tickets in advance (by
Sunday, 28 March) by calling Deans Place Hotel on 01323 870 248.
If you have questions, call Much
Ado on 01323 871 222.
See you at Supper Club!
And See Here!
Those of you with long memories may
remember that The Book Show featured
our own reading recommendation last year. If you missed it, you can watch Nash
stumble, mumble, hesitate and generally break all the rules of good TVmanship while trying to express everything that is wonderful about Juliet Nicolson's The Perfect Summer by clicking here (this link will open a new browser window for you, letting you
watch a YouTube video).

Charley Harper: An Illustrated Life
|
If you're like us, the name
Charley Harper may not mean much - until you see this wonderful book and
instantly recognize his work from the many children's books he illustrated.
Whether illustrating a school
book or creating an ad campaign, Harper's good humour and charm shine through.
And his delightfully quirky, slightly skewed points of view (see the
illustration of a cow being devoured by piranhas, for instance!) make us see
the world from a slightly different perspective than we're used to.
So we're pleased to see the
arrival not only of Charley Harper - An
Illustrated Life but also new editions of some children's books that he
illustrated in the 1950s and '60s, including board books with ABCs and 123s.
These are not available on our
website (although we can make arrangements to post them for you, if necessary).
Stop in the shop to re-acquaint yourself with Harper and his wonderful work. .
.
(An Illustrated Life is a hardback, and costs 35; his children's
books are priced variously.)

An Extraordinary Alice
|
Alice in Wonderland has had many
incarnations over the decades, but never before has there been a book quite
like the Artists Choice edition illustrated by John Vernon Lord.
Lord's whimsical creations have
a heart of steel: His Wonderland is delightful, but a little threatening;
childish, but also quite grown-up.
Vivid colours add to the surreal
quality, and charming black and white decorations add a comic relief.
Only 348 copies of this
extraordinary book have been created, each signed by Lord. (Of these, 68 are
'Special Editions' that come in a slipcase and include two prints from the
book.)
Stop in the shop to see this
extraordinary version of the children's classic. Or see our website, where
you'll find more photographs of the book - plus an safe, easy way to order your
own copy.
