MADA Awards New Car to Winning Teacher of the Year

Congratulations to Rhonda Holmes-Blankenship, a tenth and eleventh grade English teacher at Rising Sun High School in Cecil County who was named the 2012-2013 Maryland Teacher of the Year at a black tie gala on Friday, October 5th at Martin's West.   Always a highlight of MADA's philanthropic giving, the event was well-attended by legislators and dignitaries.

MADA Chairperson, Marisa Shockley, announced that the winning teacher would be awarded a new 2013 Ford Focus and would also receive their very own 'TOY 2013' vanity plate courtesy of the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration. Just before leaving the podium, she jingled the keys with a cheerful, "Good Luck!"

The ballroom erupted in cheers and applause after Rhonda's name was announced. Surrounded by her family and peers from Cecil County, she made her way to the stage and happily accepted the keys from Marisa!

Rhonda will serve as Maryland's Education Ambassador for the next year and will also go on to compete for the title of National Teacher of the Year, the winner of which will be announced next Spring at the White House.

The gift of a brand new car came at exactly the right time for Rhonda and her family.  During the excitement, she managed to pull Marisa aside and let her know that her family had to rent a car to make it to the ceremony that night.  "My car is on the fritz," she explained, "this is perfect!' This donation marks MADA's 12th year as a presenting sponsor of the Teacher of the Year program. On behalf of all our members, we are proud to be a part of this worthwhile program.

Congratulations Rhonda and we wish you safe driving!

Service Advisors Overtime Exemption Extended Through March

Congressional legislation, signed into law today, to prevent a government shutdown includes an extension of a federal overtime exemption for service advisors through March. Since the late 1970s, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has held that the frontline employee-salespersons in the service department remain exempt from federal time-and-a-half pay requirements. In 2011, DOL attempted to reverse this policy. Congress intervened and temporarily stopped the Department from enforcing the change. The Congressional ban was included in a funding measure that was set to expire at the end of September. Under the new continuing resolution that extends government spending through March 2013, DOL is prevented from enacting the new policy for service salespeople. "Reversing 40 years of precedence of overtime requirements for service advisors could force dealers to make potentially costly compensation and staffing changes," said NADA Chairman Bill Underriner. "Altering overtime rules after 40 years with little to no justification hinders a dealer's ability to create new jobs." Even with DOL's restrictions in place, NADA has assisted several dealers involved in wage and hour audits by letting overly-aggressive federal inspectors know of the prohibition. Underriner also recognized Rep. Denny Rehberg, R-Mont., who chairs the House subcommittee that funds the DOL. "Under Chairman Rehberg's leadership, Congress extended the overtime exemption for service advisors until March 27, 2013. America's franchised auto dealers applaud his efforts," Underriner added.

New Webinars Announced from DealersEdge

#1: Advanced Effective Labor Rate Engineering!

Date/Time: Thursday, October 11 at 1:00 p.m.

Presenter: "Professor" Ray Branch, President of the KEEPS Corporation
Cost: $149.00 per person

You can make relatively small and almost invisible-to-the-customer changes in labor pricing that would result in an increase to your Effective Labor Rate (ELR) of $6 or $7 in just 30 days.

Sounds almost too good to be true doesn't it. But listen in to this Webinar and Ray Branch will both prove it to you and show you how.   "Professor" Ray has studied this concept for over 17 years and in the process has analyzed over 32 million dealership repair orders. The results of his studies are nothing short of amazing and very revealing. Learn the formula for almost immediate and significant ELR improvement.

You will learn:

  • The real definition of "Effective Labor Rate"
  • More than 12 specific ELR improvement techniques
  • About the Visibility Pyramid - ELR fully explained
  • The science of Flat Rate Frequency Utilization
  • How to control the up and down swings in your customer paid ELR and much, much more!

Date/Time: Thursday, October 18, 2012 at 1:00 p.m.

Presenter: Ken Hantman, President of Perimeter Protective Systems

Cost: $149.00 Per Person

Car dealers are susceptible to four types of physical loss, not including internal theft and embezzlement:

  • Undetected losses
  • Sudden catastrophic losses like arson, major vandalism, sabotage, and employee violence
  • Routine theft, pilferage, and vandalism that adds up to big bucks
  • Slip and fall and other public liability claims plus avoidable workers comp claims

While the losses from individual incidents may seem relatively small, in aggregate the dollars lost to these issues dwarf the losses from known risks like embezzlement and fraud, according to FBI and other law enforcement figures. This webinar will teach you how to take command of security and safety in the dealership by measurably reducing the risks in each loss category, plus:

  • Why so much crime against dealerships goes undetected
  • What's right and what's wrong with security cameras
  • How to identify hazards and reduce public liability claims
  • One simple step to control unauthorized access by vendors
