Greetings!

As I climbed the stairs to Ayu Yoga Studio the other morning, huddled against the cold and fantasizing about being in a warmer climate, I found myself at eye level with the overturned flower pots pictured below.  I couldn't help but notice how the light was hitting them, that their shapes and colors seemed to harmonize with each other and their surroundings, and it occurred to me that even in their dormant state they were beautiful.  I was reminded of the temporariness of all of nature (Prakriti), thought of how these planters would be turned many times over, and realized that whether they were up or down was neither good nor bad.  My grouchy winter funk began to fade.

The Bhagavad Gita says ...

"[The] wise ones have transcended the pairs of opposites; they are the same in success or failure, indifferent to loss or gain; they never bother to compete or compare, are free from envy, and contentedly shoulder whatever comes to them."  It goes on to say that "This mental evenness is what is meant by yoga (union with the Divine).  Indeed, equanimity is yoga!"

So rather than wish you a happy new year, I wish you all a new year filled with equanimity.

Namaste,
Jody Atkinson
