February/2010 |

To all CCI/Members and Friends;
I have estimated that in the last two months I have traveled four provinces, spoken at two colleges, have met with over 100 different camp staff, presented CCI vision four times, have had two car rentals, visited 10 camps, conducted two training events, have connected with approximately 10 businesses, spent over 20 hours on planes, over 50 hours driving, have received over 500 emails, been in over 5 hotels, flown close to 10,000 miles, have waited about 20 hours for planes, developed new promo materials, have had 4 Skype calls, have spoken to approximately 500 people, and have spent over 50 hours developing our social networks and website.
I am approaching my fifth month as national director and realize how Big our country is. My goal is to continue to connect with as many camps as possible through speaking engagements, training events and regional activities. I would love to meet with you when I am in your area. I have posted my schedule in each Equipper as a way for you to know where I am. I would encourage you to attend our regional meetings happening across the country; it is a great time to meet each other and for me to have a chance to share my vision for CCI/Canada, get your input and connect with other camps.
I am using the social networks such as twitter, facebook, youtube, CCI website and the Equipper as my way of communicating and sharing with each one of you. I have been working diligently to identify those things that can add value and benefit to your membership. My vision is to champion Christian Camping across Canada in any way I can. I appreciate your prayers as I extensively travel and speak in the next three months.
This issue I am focusing in part on training, believing that we are only as good as our people.
Blessings to all as you begin to gear up for the spring and summer season of camping.

| Children Playing Outside Laugh More |
|
Child of Our Time, a televised research project co-produced by the BBC and the Open University in the UK, is halfway through its ambitious 20-year mission of tracking the development of 25 children since birth. One of Executive Producer Tessa Livingstone's studies has found that the more children played, the more they laughed, especially when outside. In fact, children who played the most laughed up to 20 times more than others. As a child psychologist, Livingstone maintains that it is important to get the balance right between unstructured play and the high level of structured activity, such as music, drama and language classes, which take up so much of the modern child's time.
Children who are allowed to play and explore outside are likely to be more adventurous, self-motivated and better able to understand risk when they grow up, according to Livingstone. Her research team found the amount of time children are allowed to roam out of their parents' sight has dropped by 90 percent over the past 20 years. "This is an extraordinary change, and it says a lot about our fear of modern life, pedophilia, etc.," Livingstone explains. "Children learn two things from this: Strangers are fearsome and dangerous, and it's dangerous to go outside." She also notes other research indicating that children are probably safer from stranger danger when playing outside with other children than when playing online alone.

Any interest in camp Mattresses? In response to several camps asking about possible deals in mattresses for camps, I have been trying to develop
a deal with a foam manufacturer who specializes in camp mattresses. I am negotiating a pricing 10% lower then wholesale price with the potential for higher discounts based on quantities. The deal allows small camps to purchase at prices normally reserved for
larger camps and larger camps to get an even better discount. I am looking for an idea of how many mattresses our members might need over a two year period. Email me if there is any interest in pursuing this.

SHEPHERDING POTENTIAL IN LOVE
|
|
Taking various insights on
discipleship from scripture and borrowing from various leadership theories, "The Amaryllis Way" is a philosophy and theory of leadership which is transferable to
all aspects of our life. To truly appreciate the
concept you must understand some of its rich meanings. Derived from the greek which means to sparkle it has several nuances to it. First,
amaryllis has a caring and managing theme as part of its core. The Latin word
is the name given to a female shepherdess. A shepherd guards, nurtures, manages
and tends the sheep. Second, the
amaryllis can be a flowering plant that comes from a bulb-not just a little
bulb, but one the size of a baseball. A bulb is a complete plant just waiting
to be nurtured; it represents potential to be nurtured. Using the gardening motif, we as leaders
can be likened to a gardener who takes the bulb and nurtures it to blossom. Finally,
'amaryllis' has its root in the French word which means love. It can be likened
to the attitude we engage others. As a leader we want to approach all
situations in an attitude of love and care.
The combination of these three
meanings develops a foundation for what I call "The Amaryllis Way" which is
simply "Shepherding Potential in Love". It is the process of adding sparkle to your staff and team members. As
godly leaders, program directors, team leaders, counselors we look for the potential in each other, guiding
them like a shepherd in their journey of growth with an attitude of love. As we begin to gear up for the summer camping and conference season may we not forget to develop the people in our care.
(The Amaryllis Way is available as a hard cover book, as a team assessment tool and an audio book. The down loadable audio book is available free online.) Derrick Mueller
