Merry Christmas!
I have just returned from visiting camps and directors in Alberta and I am quick to say how cold and how beautiful the province is, with the evergreen trees heavy laden with snow. The whole province is one big postcard. I was blessed to connect with various Camp directors and staff, hear their stories and receive their fellowship. On more than one occasion I found myself afterwords in tears as I reflected the camp journey and experiences. Again I realized that we are better together as we journey in ministry through the good times and the bad. On behalf of the CCI/ Canada office staff and the board we want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. Derrick

The RCMP has announced that, effective immediately, police forces across the country will no longer be able to share information from CPIC (the Canadian Police Information Centre) with businesses that specialize in providing background checks for security purposes - including BackCheck, (a Div. Of Checkwell Solutions Corporation), which has hundreds of highly educated Canadian analysts conducting thousands of such checks daily for 5,000 corporations and volunteer organizations across Canada. |

Honorariums for Camp Speakers
Honorariums are paid for a variety of reasons, such as for services including Acting as a facilitator at a workshop, providing music for an event, editing, translating, freelancing, being a visiting minister, providing services at weddings, funerals, etc
In Canada, honorarium is considered as salary and thus, taxable income under the Income Tax Act. In the case where a gift is substituted for honorarium (gift in lieu of money), it is still classified as a taxable benefit by Canada Revenue Agency.
In case where honorarium is paid to individuals not resident in Canada, it is still subjected to income tax withholding (usually 15%) unless prior approval was obtained from Revenue Canada.
Compensation includes all forms of salaries, wages, commissions, bonuses, fees, honoraria, etc., plus the value of taxable and non-taxable benefits. In general terms, it includes all amounts that form part of a recipient's income from employment plus the charity's portion of payments, such as employee's pension, medical or insurance plan, employer CPP and EI contributions, Federal and Provincial income tax, and workers compensation benefits.

Are you in a Pit- Take Courage! A pit can be described as that low point in ones life, a place of despair and hopelessness. The problems with pits is getting out of them. When we are all alone it seems next to impossible. In the biblical story of Jonah, we find him at one of the lowest points in his life, he is in the belly of a whale waiting to die, with no hope of surviving. Now that is what I call a pit.
A man fell in a pit and couldn't get himself out. A bunch of different leaders came and assembled alongside. There was one subjective coach who came along and said, "I feel for you down there" and then he left. The objective coach came by and said, "It is logical that someone would fall down there" and then he too left.
The pharisaical leader said, "Only bad people fall in the pit." "Tell me about it. This could be a bestseller." The fundamentalist leader said, "You deserve your pit." He said this two more times and then left.
A mathematician leader came by and calculated how he fell in the pit. A news reporter came by and wanted the exclusive story on the pit.The Government Agency-Revenue Canada leader said, "Are you paying taxes on your pit? This is a lot of space here, are you intending to build? Will you use sewage?"
The self-pitying lowesteem leader said, "You haven't seen anything till you've seen my pit. You think that's a pit, come over to my pit. The charismatic coach said, "Just confess that you're not in the pit."
The optimist leader said, "Things could be worse. There could be mines in there, piranhas or lots of spiders." The pessimist said, "Things will get worse. It's going to rain, you're going to drown."
Christ seeing the man in the pit reached out his hand and helped him out.
Leading people out of a pit requires a willingness to be personally involved in their lives by reaching down and not only taking note that they are in the pit, but helping them out.
True leadership is lending a hand to those who find themselves in life's various pits. Who you are as a leader will determine how effective you are in developing others.

Charity Fund Raising If you're involved with charity fund-raising, you should know that Revenue Canada has recently changed its policy about fund-raising events and donation tax receipts. Normally, if you sell tickets for an event such as a dinner or gala you can issue a donation receipt for the difference between the ticket price and the value of the food and entertainment provided. Under the new policy, if you are holding a combined dinner and a silent auction, (for example) your organization won't be able to issue a donation receipt for any portion of the ticket price. Because of the auction, Revenue Canada will no longer consider any portion of the ticket price to be a donation. If you want to a issue donation receipts, you will have to issue two separate tickets, one for the dinner and one for the auction. People must be able to buy either ticket without the other.

Call to Prayer
Uzbekistan Christian Camp Director Brought to Court with False Charges
Camp Director Dmitry Pitirimov and two other leaders of the church were found guilty of "involving children in religious activity" and tax evasion based on fabricated and misinterpreted evidence. The sentence imposed heavy fines on each of them personally and on the church, and banned all three from any position of administrative or fiscal authority, which effectively deprives the ministry of its leaders.
Christian Camp Joy has been started and operated under the umbrella of the Baptist Union of Uzbekistan. Dmitry Pitirimov and his staff have participated in CCI/Russia training events. The ministry of Camp Joy has always been an example of accountability and transparency, showing respect to the authorities and the laws of the country as well as sensitivity to its culture and traditions. Dimitry has managed to operate the camp even when all other Christian camping ministries in Uzbekistan were declared illegal and went underground.
The future of the ministry of Camp Joy and even of the Christian camping movement in Uzbekistan as a whole depends on the results of this trial. Alexander Kharitonov, President of Christian Camping International/Russia, Serving CIS and Baltics urges us to pray. |
