2012 IIIT Summer Scholars and Students Programs completed
The fifth IIIT Summer Institute for Scholars and the sixth Summer Students Program for 2012 came to an end on August 18, 2012 with a graduation ceremony that brought together students, scholars and senior IIIT executives and staff. The students and scholars expressed their gratitude and appreciation to IIIT for the experience, the hospitality, the rich conversations and the cordial environment during the program. More...

Professor Mahmoud Ayoub Receives IIIT Distinguished Scholar Award 2012
The International Institute of Islamic Thought honored Dr. Mahmoud Ayoub for his lifetime services and scholarly contribution to the study of Islam and Christian-Muslim relations, and awarded him the IIIT Distinguished Scholar Award for 2012.
The Award was presented on July 18, 2012 during the special ceremony that culminated IIIT Summer Program for Scholars and Students. More...

Friends of IIIT Attend Annual Iftar/Dinner
Professor Heidi Hadsell, President of the Hartford Seminary, delivered Al Faruqi Memorial Lecture at the IIIT annual Friends of IIIT Iftar/Dinner held at IIIT on July 25, 2012.
The focus of the keynote address was on Christian-Muslim Relations and overcoming the gap of understanding between different faith communities. Professor Hadsell praised the special relationship between the Harford Seminary and IIIT and the continued support that the seminary receives from IIIT, particularly in the area of Imam Training and education, and the study of Christian-Muslim relations in general. Yahya M. Michot
Dr. Yahya Michot presented the opening lecture entitled "Classical Approaches to Ethics and Governance: Ibn Taymiyya Against Extremism", which revolved around his newly released book Ibn Taymiyya: Against Extremisms at IIIT's fifths Summer Institute for Scholars 2012. Dr. Michot (Belgium, 1952) joined Hartford Seminary in 2008 as Professor of Islamic Studies and Christian-Muslim Relations. He is also the current editor of the journal "The Muslim World" edited by the Seminary.
From 1983 to 1997, he taught Arabic philosophy, language, history and literature in Louvain (Belgium) and, from 1998 to 2008, Islamic theology and Arabic in Oxford (UK). He has published numerous books and articles about Islamic classical thought, drugs in Muslim societies and Islam in the West, including "IBN SÎNÂ. Lettre au vizir Abû Sa'd" (Arabic edition & translation, 2000), "AVICENNE. Réfutation de l'astrologie" (Arabic edition & translation, 2006), "Ibn Taymiyya: Muslims under non-Muslim Rule" (2006), "Ahmad al-Aqhisârî: Against Smoking. An Ottoman Manifesto" (Arabic edition & translation, 2010), "Musulmans en Europe" (2002), and the chapter "Revelation" in the "Cambridge Companion to Classical Islamic Theology" (2008).
Dr. Michot has served as a consultant to various universities, international organizations and official bodies in the UK. From 1995 to 1998, he was president of the Higher Council of Muslims in Belgium.
He is internationally recognized as a specialist of both the Iranian philosopher Avicenna (d. 1037) and the Syrian theologian-mufti Ibn Taymiyya (d. 1328). He has also explored the influence of Avicenna on later Sunnism and English thought, that of Ibn Taymiyya on pre-Wahhâbi Ottoman puritanism and modern Islamism. |

Fawakih program hosted at IIIT
 In its mission to promote the study of Islam, IIIT hosted Fawakih summer programs. Saif Omar, director of Fawakih, commented on the three year relationship between Fawakih and IIIT: "We do believe the partnership with TFI/IIIT is an important one and we want to continue to grow it so it can bear many fruits." Fawakih is designed to help students develop a deeper relationship with and a greater appreciation for the Quran and other Islamic texts. Fawakih's four-week residential program emphasizes the importance of integrating reading (tajwid), understanding (Arabic) and growing (tafsir) into its unique teaching approach. |

IESE, the Institute for Epistemological Studies (Europe) and ASRC, the Advanced Studies Research Centre, held their first joint seminars on the topic of "The European Discourse on Islam at the Time of Arab Revelation." The venue was the office of IESE at 500 Louise Ave., Brussels. More...

- Examines educational, academic, and societal issues from an Islamic perspective,
- Introduces intellectual and methodological reforms in education, classical knowledge, and societal science,
- Formulates a comprehensive Islamic vision and methodology for critical analysis of contemporary knowledge, and
- Promotes and supports research projects, organizes intellectual and cultural meetings, publishes scholarly works, and engages in teaching and training
