2010 TAOS ART GLASS INVITATIONAL
ARTISTS: Call for Entries

Call for Entries is Now Open
TIGA is announcing the 2010 national call for entries for this year's ever expanding Taos Art Glass Invitational. The event, produced by the Taos Institute for Glass Arts, is also sponsored by Glass Alliance - New Mexico, the Taos Gallery Association and the Town of Taos. It will feature the Juried Invitational exhibited at Hulse-Warman Gallery and the Walking On Glass Tour featuring exhibitions in ten other galleries in Taos.

The entry does not require submission of exact works proposed to be shown by the artist. Artists are selected on merit of the body of works submitted, which must be representative of the works the artist will be delivering for exhibition. This type of submission is geared for the artist's benefit, in that it enables the artist to show the most recent works he/she has completed instead of a work made 6 or more months before, photographed, and held back for this particular opportunity of exhibition.

Deadline for submission is April 22, 2010. The jury for the  Invitational Exhibition and exhibition selections for the Walking On Glass Tour will be announced on May 11, 2010. Works must be shipped or delivered by June 18, 2010. The show will be mounted on July 1-4, with Private Collector Previews slated for July 5 -6 and Public Openings and Receptions on July 10-11. The show closes August 11, 2010.

Besides the exhibitions, the 2010 Taos Art Glass Invitational will feature a large array of educational opportunities: lectures, studio tours, demonstrations, glass art experiences, and workshops led by acclaimed artists from around the nation. Many events will be free and open to the public. Limited spaces will be available for some of these events. so stay tuned and act early. There will also be limited space in glass experiences and workshops. We will be announcing all these opportunity details over the next few months along with easy-to-access registration online.

THE ART OF DECOR
by Michael Miro
Miro's Glass Art Plate SeriesThe greatest evolutionary leap ever made on this planet was when primates discovered decor. That discovery is the missing link between animal and human. Monkeys and octopi can make tools but only humans decorate everything around them.  It is a total obsession with us homo sapiens. Some make a distinction between fine art, craft and decor but on an individual level, as a human, compelled by an inescapable imperative, what difference does it make?

It always throws me when I go to a party where valuable art hangs on the walls and excellent food and wine is served on paper plates and in plastic cups. A paper plate is functional but is it elegant? Does it heighten the dining or party experience? Is it really that much more convenient? We generally go to a lot of effort to entertain and just that little bit more attention to detail makes such a difference.

In fine dining, the bowl, the platter and the plate are the pallette upon which the medium of culinary art is presented. It is an essential part of the whole experience. I may be a snob about it but the fact is, I just love glass. Glass is such an exquisite medium to hold, to look at and to enhance whatever is placed upon it... and it's dishwasher safe. To be able to make something of such quality that can be shared so directly with guests in your home is one of the most gratifying elements of working in glass. When it is not being used, it still enhances the environment just sitting on a table, a counter or a shelf.

This March, I will be offering an exciting workshop in the creation of functional objects made of glass. We will discuss the importance of functional decor in our lives and will design objects of beauty to be made and used. We will learn how to produce these objects with the medium of glass.

As a student in this workshop, you will be provided with the fundamentals necessary to pursue fused and slumped glass, two of the most common forms of kiln-glass. In the end, you will make two fused and slumped objects of decor, one 8" plate and an optional piece from available slumping molds. The workshop will cover exercises in glass cutting, including straight, curved cuts and circles. From there, you will take your new found skills and put them to use designing, cutting and composing the parts necessary to make two fused and slumpedMichael-IntroToFuse1 plates. Discussions and demonstrations will cover the basics of kiln forming -from types of glass and molds for slumping to kilns and firing schedules. After completion of the class you will have the knowledge necessary to utilize the TIGA COMMUNITY ACCESS STUDIO and work on your own.

TIGA Cold-Working Area TIGA
Announces...
NEW EQUIPMENT!!!

TIGA is very excited about its growth and expansion for 2010. New equipment is coming in and will enable TIGA to more effectively serve artists with their kiln-firing needs, from large architectural and sculptural firings, to vitrograph stringers and crucible casting, test-firings and jewelry, TIGA will have the right kiln equipment for the job.

TIGA has just completed a new mold-making section of the studio. This community accessible area will allow the artist all the tools and equipment needed to make rubber molds, casting molds of all kinds, steam or melt-out for the lost-wax method, and then cast by taking home to your own kiln or by casting in one of ours.

In a few weeks, our cold-working section will be in full swing. We are currently completing the electrical for that section and refurbishing some of the equipment. The cold-working section will have a Foredom hand tool, a small and large belt sander, a tile saw, a grinder, a circular saw, and a sink. The second phase will add an arbor with sanding/polishing disks and diamond carving wheels. We are still looking to add a sandblaster and flat-lap through donation of equipment or funds to purchase. We welcome any assistance with this area of acquisition.

However, we are not yet done. The next focus will be on our torchworking department. TIGA is seeking donations of targeted funds or actual equipment to realize this area of service for artists. Please contact TIGA if you can help in any way, large or small.

Visit the website for more details about what TIGA will be acquiring on our FACILITY PAGE.
