Turn Over a New Leaf; Try Composting
| The Moon Township Public Works Department is offering residents two options to reuse yard waste this fall:
Curbside Leaf Pick-up
As part of its fall composting program, the Moon Township Public Works Department is offering curbside leaf pickups through Dec. 2. Leaf pick-up follows residents' regular garbage collection schedules. To participate, leaves must be placed at curbside in biodegradable paper bags by 8 a.m. on pick-up day.
Yard Waste Drop-off Site
Residents also have the option of dropping off leaves or brush at the Downes Fire Station, located at the intersection of Beaver Grade and Ewing Roads. The drop-off site will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays through Dec. 4. Reap the benefits of your composting efforts by picking up wood chips and mature compost for your own yard. Arrange a compost pick-up by calling the Public Works Department at 412-262-1700.

Give a Gift that will Last
|
Honor a friend or family member this holiday season by commemorating a brick in their name in the Moon Township Memorial Garden. When ordering, indicate that the brick is a gift and receive a certificate that can be presented to the recipient. Find a brick order form and details here. |
Making More Room at the Mooncrest Community Center
| Following a successful fundraising campaign by the Felician Sisters, a building addition to the Mooncrest Community Center soon will break ground, making room for increased student enrollment in the after- school programs offered there.
The Moon Township Board of Supervisors voted to award a $82,600 bid to C.W. Smith Contracting, Inc. for a single-story building addition to the Mooncrest Community Center located in the Mooncrest neighborhood off of Thorn Run Road. The project will be fully funded by grant money and donations. The addition will expand the building's multi-purpose room, which the Felician Sisters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Province use to facilitate After-School and Homework Help programs for students and other outreach programs for neighborhood residents. A variety of volunteers, ranging from Robert Morris University basketball players to retired professionals, visit the center every day to tutor and mentor students and help out with other programs offered at the building. Ewing Road Roundabout Opens for Traffic
| The first roundabout built in Allegheny County in recent years has opened at the Ewing Road interchange in Moon Township. The Allegheny County Airport Authority funded the $950,000 project to improve traffic flow at the eastbound on and off ramps of Ewing Road and Business Loop I-376. The Allegheny County Airport Authority and officials from both the township and state cut the ribbon on the roundabout on Oct. 31.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, roundabouts bring a 90 percent reduction in fatal crashes and a 75 percent reduction in crashes with injuries. At the same time, they carry about 30 percent more vehicles in peak traffic than signalized intersections.
A roundabout, which is like a traffic circle, eliminates traffic signals, stop signs and left turns against traffic. Traffic flows continuously, and vehicles entering the loop yield to those already in it. The Airport Authority spearheaded the project to improve access for existing businesses and also to accommodate future development expansion in the Cherrington Corporate Center and surrounding areas.
Find a diagram here that illustrates traffic flow through the roundabout.
