MEDICARE - KNOW THE RULES

MEDICARE REQUIRES SYMPTOMS!
Did you know that you CANNOT bill Medicare for adjusting a region of the spine UNLESS a patient FIRST reports symptoms in that area? It does not matter what you find through tests, palpation, etc. 
 
While there is no question that a majority of Chiropractic Physicians are "Full Spine Adjustors", you want to be sure that with Medicare you are only billing for adjustments to areas that have presenting symptoms. Presenting symptoms should be followed up with documentation of a proven subluxation (prove with P.A.R.T. or X-Ray) and an adjustment to those areas. You may then submit the appropriate CPT code to your Medicare carrier.
 
ADJUSTMENT CODES:
  • 98940 - 1-2 regions of the spine
  • 98941 - 3-4 regions of the spine
  • 98942 - 5 regions of the spine

According to Medicare statistics, they expect certain percentage of your adjustments will be billed under a certain code. These percentages are as follows:

  •  98940 - 65-70%
  •  98941 - 25-30%
  •  98942 - 10%
Please note that these are averages. Do not be surprised if you NEVER bill Medicare for a 98942. This would mean that the patient came into your office presenting symptoms in ALL FIVE REGIONS of the spine!
