The New Jersey State Museum is pleased to present a diverse slate of professional auditorium-style performances that are not only interactive and educational, but fun!  Our School Day Performances cover a variety of topics including: science, history, world cultures, and fine art.  Each performance is linked to core curriculum content standards and compliments one of the Museum's exhibitions or collecting areas.

Philly Zoo on Wheels:
Climate Change Alert
October 6 at 11:30 am.
Program Development - Help the Museum and the Philly Zoo on Wheels develop a new program!  Be one of the first to view this professionally staged program and assist the traveling naturalists by providing valuable post-show feedback in exchange for free admission
 
This exciting new program is designed educate students on how wildlife is impacted by climate change and provides action steps they can take to reduce their carbon footprint and help wildlife thrive!  Core concepts explored include: ecology, fossil fuels, ecosystems, endangered species, sustainabilityAlso, check-out the Museum's new Rising Tide web page - with interactive games and information at: http://www.state.nj.us/state/museum/rising-tide . Grades: K-8. Earth Matters: The Blue Planet

NEW PROGRAM ~ Planet earth is the only planet we know of which is covered by liquid water.  Seventy-one percent of the earth's surface is covered by water with vast distances between the continents, the land, which are just islands above the surface.  The oceans are home to countless plant and animal species.  It is the largest habitat on earth, yet, scientists know more about the surface of the moon than they do about the ocean's depths.  This show helps children understand how the oceans were formed, why they are salty and blue, and that the food chain begins with tiny animals and plants called plankton. The program addresses the effects of oil spills, pesticide pollution, plastics, litter abatement and storm water runoff.  Students quickly realize what we throw on the ground finds its way to our storm drains which eventually leads to the oceans.  Children realize how important the oceans are and that each of us must do our part in protecting our "Blue Planet" and its inhabitants and that by keeping their communities clean, we help keep our oceans clean.  Grades: K - 8; Related New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards: 5.1,5.2, and 5.3.
 
Can You?

Can you dance without using your legs?  Can you act without being able to speak? Can you paint without the ability to control your arms?  In the world of Arts Access at Matheny Medical and Educational  Center, you can.  Audience members learn that, through the unique facilitation process at the Arts Access Program, individuals of all abilities can create works of art in multiple disciplines. Grades: 4-8 and up; this is a perfect program to recognize and bring Disabilities Awareness Month into your classroom with related New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards in the visual and performing arts; health and physical education; and language arts.
 

Mad Science: Halloween
October 27 at 11:30 am, $3 per person.
Are you looking for the perfect touch of spookiness for your Halloween event this year?  Our Mad Science Halloween Special Event is just the thing.  Our 45-minute presentation will have you gasping and laughing at the Mad Scientist's peculiar and chilling science experiments.  Through a mixture of science and magic the children see a paper spider turn into a 'real-live' spider.  Hear the tales of Count Eggbert and Countess Eggberta as they battle the wicked witch.  Watch as the wicked witch is melted right before your eyes!  The audience will find out how the seemingly sane Mr. Bernoulli helped the Mad Scientist float an eyeball in the air.  Then, as a grand finale, the Mad Scientist introduces the audience to the eerie world of Dry Ice, making bubbling potions and lots of fearsome fog.  All will have an evening of gruesome goodness and fun! Grades 3 - 8; related New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards: 5.1, 5.2, 5.4, 5.6, and 5.7.

Philly Zoo on Wheels: Birds of Prey

Discover amazing adaptations of Birds of Prey native to North America and learn how our choices can help protect these precious species!  Core concepts explored will include: natural resources, ecosystems, adaptations, and endangered species.  Grades: K-8; New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards: NJ: 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, and 5.4; PA: 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 4.1, 4.3, and 4.5; and DE Standards: Science 1, 6, and 7 as well as Geography 1, and 2.
 
Rob Aptaker: The Way of the Lenape
with Young Audiences New Jersey

NEW PROGRAM ~ Who were the Lenni Lenape American Indians of New Jersey and Pennsylvania?  Rob Aptaker uses Native American artifacts to explore the tools, clothing, toys, games, medicine and music that were part of their daily lives.  A fascinating introduction to Lenape cultures and customs.  (Note: Visit the Archaeology & Ethnology Bureau's exhibition Indians and Europeans in New Jersey in the Museum's basement level.) Grades K - 12; related New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards: 1.2, 3.4, and 6.1.
 
Mad Science: Be Tobacco Free

"Be Tobacco Free" is a high energy, fast-paced demonstration for large groups of children grades K-6 that graphically show tobacco's effects. Through an engaging, educational and enlightening program, children experience first-hand, the unpleasant and unhealthy aspects of tobacco use. This show offers a unique opportunity to tobacco-proof children in interesting and interactive ways, and leaves a lasting impression. Be Tobacco Free is a fully adapted program that meets National Science Education Standards. Mad Science is also a proud member of AAAS, NAEYC and NSTA.  Grades 3- 8; related New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards: 5.1 and 5.3.
DECEMBER
 
Surflight Theatre: Project America
December 1 at 11:30 am, $3 per person.
The Project America cast invites audiences on a journey through the national holidays that dot our country's calendar. With story-telling, monologues and music, Project America explains the significance and importance of these days. Audiences walk away from Project America with a new sense of pride, genuine respect, and an appreciation for the people who sacrificed so much to make our country great. This show is a must-see for educators seeking a powerful character education program. Project America approaches ethical values and moral leadership from the framework of what we all have in common: our bond as Americans.  (Note: This is an ideal series to watch after viewing the Museum's latest rotation of Civil War flags.)  Grades 4 - 8; related New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards: 1.1, 3.4, and 6.4.
 
Earth Matters: Jack's Big Bug Show
December 8 at 11:30 am, $3 per person.
Jack the big bug hunter is on an insect safari searching for the biggest bug in the world.  Creating a shadow play, by using a 25'x12' scrim and six students from the audience, Jack picks his way through the jungle foliage coming face to face with Leroy, the Big Bug.  Leroy is a fluorescent insect puppet measuring eight feet tall and through special lighting effects, loveable Leroy becomes the focal point of a fast-paced discussion of insect body parts.  With lots of fun and surprises, the children learn about Leroy's head, the antennae, compound eyes, varied mouth parts, his thorax (including his legs and wings), and his abdomen with its stinger, spiracles, and heart.  Accompanying all this puppet fun is an ongoing slide presentation showing actual insect body parts in graphic detail. Boys and girls learn that the majority of insects play an important role in the balance of nature.  Throughout this lively tapestry of the insect world, Jack weaves his philosophy; as intelligent life we should learn to enjoy, understand, and most of all respect all forms of life from the mighty whale to the tiniest insect.  Grades: K - 8; Related New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards: 5.1,5.3,5.4, and 5.7.

NEW PROGRAM ~ A lighthearted adaptation of Dickens' holiday classic starring Mr. Punch as SCROOGE!  Beautifully crafted puppets tell the tale of the man who hated Christmas, and put profits before people.  Outrageous holiday hilarity full of ghosts, giggles, geese and Tiny Tim, too!  Grades:  K - 5; Related New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards: 1.1, 1.2, 3.4, 6.1, 6.3, and 6.4.

Encore: Rosa's Ride: The Life of Rosa Parks
January 19 at 11:30 am, $3 per person.
NEW PROGRAM ~ The life of Rosa Parks - four professional actor/singer/dancers, inventive staging, and an inspiring score by Jonathan Luks - using jazz, blues and gospel styles - create a powerful theatrical experience for young audiences. We follow the struggles of a young girl through the indignities of prejudice to discover her strength of conviction, as a simple act of civil disobedience gives birth to the civil rights movement.  An intriguing backdrop, which evolves from black and white to an intricate mosaic, enables us to take "Rosa's Ride" to a new dawn.  Grades:  K - 8; Related New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards: 1.1, 1.2, 3.4, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, and 6.4.
 
Mad Science: Marvels in Motion

NEW PROGRAM ~This is a perfect opportunity to integrate Sir Isaac Newton's Birthday (January 4th) into your classroom activities. 
Come one, come all... to the Mad Science Physics Olympics! This interactive event is all about the fun-damentals of moving science including Newton's 3 Laws of Motion and all sorts of surprises including dancing, chemically assisted football tossing, and even amazing "space-age" rocket packs. Children have a chance to compete in wacky events, while the mad scientists prepare to unveil their top-secret motion machine. Come and discover the science behind some of your favorite Olympic sports and find out why this show is such a "blast!".  Grades 3- 5; related New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards: 5.1, 5.2, 5.4, and 5.7.

Dance China New York: Lion Dance Plus
with Young Audiences New Jersey

Tahira: Freedom Stories
with Young Audiences New Jersey

NEW PROGRAM ~ Gifted storyteller TAHIRA shares tales of freedom fighters in this dramatic performance.  She offers a compelling look at the women and men, such as an enslaved Virginia man, Henry "Box" Brown, who took extraordinary risks for freedom.  Grades K - 8; related New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards: 1.2, 1.4, 3.4, and 6.1.
 
Mayhem Poets: And Let Our Voices Sing

Mad Science: Up, Up and Away

"Is it a bird?" "Is it a plane?" "No, it's Mad Science!" "Up, Up and Away" will capture the audiences' interest and show how exciting science can be with a variety of eye-popping demonstrations and experiments that involve the concept of air. There will be plenty of opportunity for hands-on audience participation in this event with demonstrations that include giant smoke rings, a hot air balloon, the Mad Science Hovercraft, and finally the Big Sneeze demonstration. Bash the Trash

NEW PROGRAM ~ Take an electrifying tour of Mexico, Greece, Hawaii, Japan, Italy, and the Caribbean.  Enjoy the rhythm and cultures of these fascinating lands in this extraordinary production performed by two remarkable dancers.  Grades:  K - 8; related New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards: 1.1, 1.2, 3.4, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, and 6.4.
JUNE
 
Mad Science: Wacky Science
June 1 at 11:30 am, $3 per person.
Static electricity, gooey stuff and dry ice, who could ask for anything more fun. In "Wacky Science" the audience will learn what a polymer is and will get to watch a brave volunteer make a giant batch of Slime with their bare hands! They will also be amazed as the Mad Scientist uses science to melt the 'Wicked Witch of the West' right before their eyes. Next, the children will learn about static electricity from demonstrations with a Van de Graaff generator. One of the victims...er...children will even get to touch the Van de Graaff for a 'hair raising' experience. We round off the event with our exciting Dry Ice demonstrations that include bubbling potions, singing quarters, popping corks and cool looking fog.  Grades: 3-8; related New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards: 5.1, 5.2, 5.4, 5.6, and 5.7.
 
Philly Zoo on Wheels: Rainforest Safari
June 8 at 11:30 am, $3 per person.
The dynamic presentation includes live animals that are native to rainforests around the world.  As students learn important biofacts about rainforest animals, they will also learn that more than half of the Earth's species live in tropical rainforests.  This animal-filled presentation is filled with live rainforest animals and biofacts that highlight the importance of rainforests around the globe!  Core concepts explored will include: ecology, ecosystems, endangered species, sustainability.  Grades: K-8; related Core Curriculum Content Standards: NJ: 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, and 5.4; PA: 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 4.1, 4.3, and 4.5; and DE: Science 1, 6, and 7 as well as Geography 1 and 2.
