In 1972, a group of concerned citizens came together to look out for eastern Long Island's environment. Forty years later, in 2012, Group for the East End's full-time staff of professional advocates and educators are still facing and solving the challenges of protecting and restoring nature in our special region. We will continue to address the most difficult environmental problems into the future -- as long as it takes.

New Law Curbs Ram Island Causeway Development

Shelter Island's Ram Island Causeways will see better protection this year, thanks to a law adopted by the Town Board in December. Group President Bob DeLuca was involved for nearly two years in the process of creating a law that would reduce potential development in one of the town's most fragile and scenic areas.

Riverhead Site Plan Hearings Open To Public

In December, Group for the East End applauded the approval of new site plan review requirements that will allow the public to weigh in on proposed commercial development projects within the Town of Riverhead. For months the Group has advocated in partnership with the Riverhead Neighborhood Preservation Coalition, and many other civic associations to see this constructive legislation become a reality.
