Water testing in Suffolk County indicates pharmaceuticals are making their way into the natural environment through improper disposal and may negatively impact human and ecological health. Group for the East End has partnered with Suffolk County to allow consumers to dispose of any unused medications at local police departments instead of flushing them down the drain. Items will be accepted anonymously at participating locations 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Stay tuned in 2012 for additional information about the Pharmaceutical Disposal and Aquifer Protection Initiative.

Southampton PDD Referendum Passed
|
Thanks to Southampton Town voters, the approval of Planned Development Districts (PDDs) will now require a supermajority (4 of 5) vote by the Town Board. Group for the East End advocated for this increased certainty in decision making and we are happy to report success.

Aquebogue 3rd Graders Plant Natives to Protect the Bay
|
In November, Group for the East End educators teamed up with Ms. White's 3rd grade class at Aquebogue Elementary School to improve Meeting House Creek Park with some native plantings. The students installed about 90 plants to provide wildlife habitat, address stormwater pollution, and beautify the area. This project was supported financially by the Peconic Estuary Program, with planning support from the Town of Riverhead. Thank you to all who participated.
