Route 25A Planning Study
In response to the influx of commercial development applications along Route 25A in Wading River, the Group and its conservation partners called for a planning study of the area. Riverhead Town Board members recently authorized this study, which would balance commercial needs with environmental protection along this rural corridor. The Group has advocated for a short-term development moratorium as well, which would allow the Town to put its best planning measures in place without pressure to approve any pending proposals right away.

Toxic Plume Headed Toward Proposed New Subdivision in Remsenburg
If protective health measures are not put in place, the proposed 19 residential homes in the "Estates at Remsenburg" subdivision should not be permitted to be built. A half-mile-wide and 2-mile-long swath of contaminated groundwater is likely to reach the would-be subdivision parcel, causing potential health risks for future homeowners. Southampton Town Planning Board considered this proposal during a recent pre-application hearing, and Group Environmental Advocate Jenn Hartnagel was on hand to provide significant recommendations regarding its potential environmental and health impacts.

Artists for the East End in Southold
Please join us for wine, beer, hors d'oeuvres and good cheer on Saturday, August 20th, from 5:00PM to 7:00PM, just after the Southold Merchants Fair! Tickets are $30 each, with proceeds benefiting Group for the East End. There will be a very special art exhibit by members of the independent artists' group, Artists for the East End. These artists find inspiration from nature, and have joined together to support our activities to protect and restore the East End environment. Their works of art will be part of a silent auction during the cocktail party, with 30 percent of the proceeds going to Group for the East End.
