New Law Could Ease Water Worries

Southampton Town is considering a law that would protect drinking water and our local bays. The proposed legislation, written by Group President Bob DeLuca, requires property owners within Southampton Town to have their septic system inspected every five years, or whenever a property is sold.

If passed, the legislation would also serve to educate homeowners about how wastewater is treated on residential properties. Septic systems are currently a primary source of excess nitrogen in the Peconic Estuary, killing fish and destroying aquatic vegetation.

SEALS Students Hit The Beach

Most schools schedule a "beach day" toward the end of the school year, giving students the chance to go outside to explore and enjoy nature. The fifth graders from John Marshall Elementary School in East Hampton held their "beach day" on June 15th, with a true educational spin, ala Group for the East End!

Sixteenth Annual Fauna-thon:
The Results Are In!
On May 21st, thirty-seven volunteers ventured throughout eastern Long Island, finding 227 species of wildlife in one day. Visit www.fauna-thon.org to see the specific results of the 2011 Fauna-thon as well as a compiled history of the event from 1996 through the present.

This event raises funds for Group for the East End's youth environmental education programs, which are conducted throughout the school year and during the summer. It's not too late to donate to the 2011 Fauna-thon -- click here to contribute!
