Group Applauds Improved PDD Law
At the conclusion of a final a public hearing before the Southampton Town Board on Tuesday, Group for the East End and local civics were victorious in a long-fought battle to improve one of the town's most controversial zoning laws. After months of debate and amendment, Southampton Town unanimously passed a law that will improve the procedures for application, submission, and review of Planned Development Districts (PDDs). The new law adds to transparency within the process and allows for public participation at the earliest stages of review for PDD applications, which have the potential to negatively impact the local environment and community character.

Making the MOST of After School Time
When Springs School's Project M.O.S.T. (Making the Most of Out of School Time) asked us to add an environmental education component to their after-school program, we happily accepted. Project M.O.S.T. has a track record of being "green." They created the Springs Seedlings project in 2009, which teaches students about the role food plays in a sustainable planet.
In April, Project M.O.S.T. and Springs Seedlings received a grant from the Levitt Foundation to offer a summer learning program and to expand their environmental education offerings for the after school program. Group for the East End environmental educators Anita Wright and Jennifer Skilbred will lead activities such as: examining food choice options for packing a trash-free lunch, constructing bird nesting boxes, stenciling storm drains. Students will also go on field trips to explore natural environments in the Springs community.
