Dark
Skies Legislation In Jeopardy
The East Hampton
Town Board is proposing to take an axe to the town's existing dark skies law
designed to reduce light pollution, protect the environment, increase safety,
reduce energy and preserve the irreplaceable view of the nighttime sky.
Proposal Is
Shortsighted
The proposed
sweeping changes are wasteful, counterproductive and are not in the best
long-term interests of East Hampton Town.
Among others, one of the changes seeks to completely eliminate
compliance requirements for non-residential properties. All residential properties have been required to be in
compliance since 2006, when the legislation was originally approved.
Difficult
economic times may call for fair adjustments to the legislation that will help
to ease potential economic burdens on commercial properties until such
conditions improve. However,
providing a free pass indefinitely is shortsighted. Each and every circumstance should be assessed
individually.
Our view of the nighttime sky is too precious to be careless with!
