Group Seeks Investigation Into Orient Water Pipeline

With support from residents of the Browns Hills Estates, the Orient Association, and the North Fork Environmental Council, Group for the East End has called upon the New York State Inspector General to launch an investigation into the controversial $4 million water pipeline proposed by the Suffolk County Water Authority (SCWA) in Orient.

Pipeline Fails to Meet Funding Requirements
According to Federal Law, the pipeline proposal (which could induce additional development and impact the local environment) was to receive "full review under the law"  before securing $2 million in federal stimulus funds for construction. A Group investigation later determined that, in January of 2010, Governor Paterson actually signed a formal certification attesting to this review.

As it turned out, the project never had all of its required permits and was formally denied by the Southold Town Board, yet SCWA continued to move ahead. In calling for formal an investigation, Group President, Bob DeLuca, advised the Inspector General that the SCWA appeared to have received a multimillion dollar stimulus award based on material flaws in its original application, and called for an immediate suspension of funding.

Cleanup Results in Collection of 4,360 lbs of Marine Debris

Who would have thought that nearly 50 people could collect and haul away 4,360 lbs of trash from one beach in a day's work? Believe it or not, that's what happened as a result of a cleanup organized at Goldsmith Inlet on Saturday, August 21st. Environmental Advocate, Jenn Hartnagel, organized the event in cooperation with the Group to Save Goldsmith Inlet, as part of the International Coastal Cleanup. This worldwide effort encourages local action to clean up the beaches and record data so action can be taken at the source.
