Group Investigates Illegal Dredging in Montauk

Our environmental advocates area always on the lookout for the East End's natural resources. Recently, Jeremy Samuelson researched a dredging violation in Montauk, enabling the Department of Environmental Conservation to get involved and put this environmentally-harmful work to a stop.

See the Stars in Southold

Southold Town will soon enjoy a clearer view of the nighttime sky. A law requiring new buildings to install protective dark sky friendly light fixtures was passed on July 27th. The legislation will reduce excess lighting and in turn focus light only where it is needed, eliminate energy waste, and protect local nocturnal wildlife and migratory birds.

Orient Water -- On Or Off?

The media and municipality still don't know whether or not Suffolk County Water Authority (SCWA) will proceed with their plan to bring public water to Orient.
The latest news says that SCWA is planning to move forward this fall. Group for the East End suggests a thorough investigation of potential environmental impacts, before any work is done.

Summer Fun In Nature

Group for the East End's Summer Field Ecology Programs have been inspiring youth ages 8-15 on eastern Long Island since 1991. Participants search for crabs, fish, insects, and other creatures and learn about them -- right in the natural environment! This fun and educational experience cultivates the next generation of environmental advocates that will protect region.

Click here for photos of our "Pondhawks" (ages 8-10).

Paul Is One Inspired Intern

Paul Stoutenburgh joined our staff in May as a summer intern. With interests focusing in environmental advocacy and education, he has sure been making the most of this experience. Paul has helped in the effort to preserve Plum Island, removed Phragmites at Marion Lake, assisted in our Summer Field Ecology Program, and traveled to Canada for the International Congress for Conservation Biology. He's also working on a documentary of wildlife on the East End!
