ACTION ALERT

East Hampton To Sell Public Lands,
With No Explanation to the Public

Join us on June 17th at East Hampton Town Hall.

With less than one-minute of discussion, no public hearing and no notice, Supervisor Wilkinson, Councilwoman Quigley, and Councilman Stanzione agreed to list for sale the widely-utilized Fort Pond House in Montauk, which East Hampton Town bought in 2003 for both "passive and active recreation" use.

Simply put, your land is being sold without notice, without a public hearing and East Hampton officials won't even tell you how the money is going to be used!

East Hampton Town Board Sets a Dangerous Precedent:
Group for the East End and the Concerned Citizens of Montauk believe that the actions of the East Hampton Town Board set a dangerous precedent for the future of public land. If the East Hampton Town Board is allowed to sell parkland without public notice or hearing, there is no telling how far the present board majority will go to balance its operating budget by selling its environmental assets to the highest bidder.

Take a Stand Against the Sale of Public Land:

East Hampton will continue selling open space and parkland throughout the town without public hearings, unless the public takes a strong stand against this behavior. You have the right to make some noise -- New York State law prohibits the sale of public parkland without an act of the State Legislature and possibly a public referendum.

Join us at 7 p.m. on June 17th at East Hampton Town Hall to tell Bill Wilkinson, Theresa Quigley and Dominick Stanzione that transparency matters.

Voice your concerns over:
  • the failure to hold a public hearing on the sale of public land
  • the non-transparent manner in which the board is making decisions to sell public parkland
  • the refusal to hold a public forum explaining how proceeds from the sale of public land would be used
  • the failure to comply with New York State Laws Governing the sale of public parkland
  • the failure to comply with East Hampton Town's own Local Waterfront Revitalization Plan
