Christmas Wishes

Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.

- Norman Vincent Peale

What a wonderful time of the year.  Busy, but enjoyable, as we gather with family and friends to celebrate the holidays and welcome a new year.  We hope you are able to pause for a few moments and enjoy all the happiness and joy of the season with the people you love.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from the Sawyers & Jacobs team.

Gadgets & Gizmos that Make Great Gifts
As promised last month, here it is...our slightly geeky list of our favorite tech to help you save time, have fun, and change your life for the better.  With the exception of one item (Spot GPS), we speak from experience as happy owners of these potential stocking stuffers.  Click on the heading to learn more about each life-changing technological wonder.

Classics

Some oldies (in tech terms) but still goodies worth telling about:

Watch TV on your schedule, not the networks'.  Fast forward through commercials.  Instant replay on your own.  Record your favorite shows.  Tell Tivo your favorite actors and it will find upcoming programs where they are scheduled to appear. There are other DVRs but there is only one Tivo.  Superior interface.

Crystal clear, digital audio.  Never lose a signal no matter how far you drive.  Listen online, in your car, at home, or on the go.  My favorite channels?  Elvis, Sinatra, ESPN, and when in season, Major League Baseball.  This time of year catch great Christmas music on the Holiday Traditions channel.

Automated, web-based calling service.  Great for coaches and anyone else needing to call large groups.  Record one call and have the service call your entire group automatically.  Huge time-saver.

Contactless payments.  Radio Frequency ID technology.  All tied to your credit or debit card.  Simply wave your Speedpass device near the pump at any Exxon or Mobil station and get your gas quickly and securely.  No sliding your card in and out of the slot.  Fast and easy.

Consolidate all those remote controls into one.  Not your average universal remote.  Sleek design.  Control your DVD player, computer, receiver, TV, and DVR, all with this one device.

Airborne
Keep your immune system strong, especially this time of year, with this handy health formula.  Plop a tablet into a small amount of water and drink up to fight off oncoming cold or sinus trouble.

Brooks Brothers Non-Iron Shirts
The shirt with an ROI.  No more weekly trips to the dry cleaners.  Just wash, dry, hang and you have a crisp shirt that appears to have come straight from the cleaners.  Great for travel.  For ladies and gentleman.

Webkinz
The equivalent of social networking beanie babies for the pre-teen set.  Buy this stuffed animal.  Enter the attached code online.  See the animal come to life in its own virtual world.  Ducks and frogs, pandas and monkeys...all playing together harmoniously on the Web.

BlackBerry Curve, Bold, or Storm
Although we believe the BlackBerry has reached its peak, if you want a good smartphone and a strong email device, these devices fit the bill.  Compare to the iPhone before buying.

LED Faucet Lights
Attach to a regular faucet and water runs blue when its cold and red when its hot.  Encourages kids to wash their hands more often.  Very cool but simple-to-install device.

Racquet Bug Zapper
Have fun while reducing the pest population.  Why stomp a spider when you can zap it with no muss and no fuss?  Runs on two AA batteries and yes, it will shock the bejabbers out of you if you are curious enough to touch it when charged.  Has a safety for the accident prone.

New Stuff

Amazing new items appearing on our radar in the past year:

Flip Camcorder
Compact, lightweight camcorder that fits in your pocket.  Runs on AA batteries and has a switchblade-type USB connector to quickly get your videos on the Web.  Simple and easy.  Disruptive technology alert!  May get its lunch eaten by the new Apple iPod nano which has video built in.

Garmin nuvi GPS
Sleek, pocket-sized GPS that gets you where you're going with no stress and no problems.  Nice to use to get your ETA when on the go.  Move your nuvi from car to car and take it anytime you rent a car for an easy ride no matter where you travel.

SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger
Small GPS that helps hikers and hunters stay in touch with the outside world when traveling in remote places.  Could be a literal lifesaver in tough situations.  Let others know if you need help or if you're OK.  Works virtually anywhere in the world with the push of a button.

One of the greatest technological innovations in years.  An amazing device that will truly change your life.  Yes.  It's all about the apps!  Too many to mention here.  Over 100,000 in the App Store now.  We'll review our favorites, and ask for yours, in an upcoming issue.  Don't want to give up your current phone or don't want to sign up with AT&T?  The iPod Touch is also a cool device.  Currently exclusive to AT&T, expect Verizon to support the iPhone in 2010.

Smaller than a laptop but larger than a smartphone.  Great in-between device for emails, viewing online video content, and quick jobs.  Battery life up to four times longer than laptops.  Runs cool.  Solid-state drive.  Durable.

Hands-free communication so you can keep both hands on the wheel to dodge reindeer this time of year.  Speech-recognition calling for added functionality.

Skype
VoIP calling and free videoconferencing.  Communicate with contacts across town or across the globe.  Good quality.  Right price.  Combined with a Polycom CS100s speakerphone, your PC becomes your phone for audio and video calls.  Powerful tool and terrific timesaver.

Become a human Wi-Fi detector with this shirt.  Wearing this shirt gives one instant geek status as the glowing Wi-Fi icon on your chest indicates wireless network signal strength.  Look like a nerdy super-hero as you save the world from weak wireless signals.

Apple iPod nano
A new improvement on an already cool device.  Now shoots video and allows one to listen to, and pause, FM radio.  Comes in vibrant colors and an ultra-thin, lightweight design.  Makes a great gift.

Lose the cords and charge your small electronics wirelessly, three at a time, by simply placing them on this cool pad.  Must be seen to be believed.  One of the hottest tech gifts this year.

LED Cap Light
Looks like a normal baseball cap but has an ultra-bright LED light hidden in the bill.  Shoots a beam of light wherever you direct your head.  A big improvement on normal headlamps.  Also comes with under-the-bill lights for reading.  A lifesaver on camping trips and great for grilling in the dark.

Summary
We hope you enjoy a few of our favorite (tech) things.  Here's hoping Santa stuffs your stocking with some of the cool tech highlighted here.

If not, stay tuned for future newsletter giveaways or attend one of our seminars for chances to win these items as cool prizes.
