Greetings!
Happy Memorial Day!
Our nation's most valuable resources are our veterans. They have fought for our
country abroad and continue to serve here at home. They are woven into the
fabric of our nation's history, and its future, having seen first-hand the
events that have shaped our country. In addition to those who served in World
War II, Korea and Vietnam, the.re are thousands of young veterans from the recent
conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.
These brave young men and women have suffered -- and survived -- some of the worst war injuries imaginable and now many of these fine people have suffered an even greater injury -- the inability to pay for their daily living expenses. Why is it, that in a nation of so many people with so much for which to be thankful, fewer than 1 percent serve their country? How could this be? These are the patriots. They come from your communities and towns. Some may be your neighbor. Yet all too often they suffer the indignity of having to ask for help because they've "fallen through the cracks" of the system. That's where we -- and fellow patriots such as yourselves -- come in to make a difference in the lives of these heroes. Your donation of just $10 this Memorial Day can make a real and meaningful difference in the life of a real American hero! In 2005, an IED explosion in Iraq severed a major artery in Sergeant Barclay's right leg. After nearly bleeding to death, medics were able to repair the artery, requiring numerous blood transfusions. She had shrapnel in her right arm and torso and underwent surgery to prevent it from traveling to her vital organs and causing further threat to her life. Susan's husband of six years abandoned her and their two small children, emptying their savings and leaving months of bills unpaid. Freedom Is Not Free assisted SGT Barclay with outstanding payments, preventing foreclosure of her home, repossession of her vehicle, the cut-off of utilities and the loss of childcare.
This is just one small example of how your donations have helped the brave men and women of our armed forces. You can visit Freedom Is Not Free to read more of these stories and to read tributes written by those we've helped.
George Orwell said, "People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf." This weekend, honor those rough men -- and women -- who've visited violence on our enemies so that we can sleep peaceably and enjoy this Memorial Day holiday with our families in safety and freedom.
Without patriots like you, we could not provide the support and services so many of our nation's heroes need today. Please visit our web site today to find out more about these services and to read the stories of brave men and women like Susan Barclay.
We thank you for your continued support and wish you a happy and safe Memorial Day weekend!
Sincerely,
Jay Kopelman Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Marine Corps (Retired) Executive Director
