Here's a Look at What's Happening at the Ringwood Farmers' Market this Week!
|
|
Greetings! Looking for something to do in the next few days? Two of our vendors are having celebrations on their own farms and we promise that it's a trip worth taking.
 | | A Barn at the Orchards of Conklin |
Tomorrow (Friday, June 29th) join the Bialas Family at their Farm Tour Friday on their farm in New Hampton, NY. It's about an hour drive from Ringwood and a pretty one at that. The open house runs on Friday from 10-3 and will feature tractor rides and a walk through the fabulous Black Dirt where you can taste some of the wonderful vegetables they have growing. Get 'down and dirty' as you learn all about Orange County's rich agricultural heritage. They'll have their 'farm stand' set up inside the barn and Edgwick Farm will be joining them with a four-legged friend as well as their exceptional farmstead goat cheeses. Bring the kids and make some memories. It doesn't get any more local than picking your own! Click here for the map of the farm and to get directions. On Wednesday, July 4th, T he Orchards of Concklin will be celebrating their 300-year Anniversary from 1pm - 6pm. The Concklin family has been continuously farming in Rockland County since 1712. In celebration of their farm and community they will have free games, free music, free balloons, free square dancing and free farm tours. Food will be available for a fee from a local grill master (grilled tomatoes and vegetables, and sweetcorn). Click here to find the Orchards on a map and get directions. Get out and have some farm fun and don't forget to "Meet Me at the Market!"

Recipe of the WeekThis week's recipe comes from the kitchen of Kasha Bialas. Be s ure to read her blog posts at The Farm Girl Cooks and get great farm fresh recipes!
Bowties with Fresh Peas and Ricotta
4 oz bowtie or farfale pasta
1 1/2 lbs fresh shelling peas, shelled, about 1 1/4 cups
2 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
2 T olive oil
1 cup ricotta
reserved pasta water, about 1/2 c
salt and pepper, lemon basil, Genovese basil, sliced or torn
Pecorino Romano cheese, grated
Bring a pot of water to boil, add salt, then pasta. While pasta is boiling, heat olive oil and garlic in a small saute pan. Allow the garlic to lightly cook for about 5 minutes on low heat. Keep the heat low enough so that the garlic doesn't color. When the pasta needs about 2 more minutes to reach 'al dente', drop the raw peas into the water with the pasta. Check the box - Barilla is pretty accurate with the cooking times needed for its pasta.
When you add the peas to the pasta pot, mush up the ricotta in the garlic and oil pan. Add some pasta water to thin it and create a creamy sauce. Using a large slotted spoon or spider, scoop up the pasta and peas and dump them into the cheese-garlic mixture. Stir well over medium heat and add a bit more pasta water as needed. Remove from heat and season with salt, pepper, lemon and Genovese basil. Serve with a generous sprinkling of Pecorino cheese.

SNAP and Healthy Families Update
The Ringwood Farmers' Market began accepting SNAP benefits this month and the program has been well received. We are thrilled to be able to make fresh, local food accessible to everyone in our community. Did you know that SNAP benefits come from Federal funds that are then spent in our local economy? It's beneficial to all involved. It's not too late to donate to the Healthy Families Program. An article featured in The Record underscored the dire need for more donations to our local food banks. Please visit our Healthy Families page on our website to learn more about the program and to make a donation.

Non-Profit Corner and Buy Local Spot
The Buy Local Spot is a space sponsored by The Ringwood Chamber of Commerce. Each week the "Spot" will feature one to two Ringwood businesses. This week we are joined by McBride Financial and Ringwood Dairy Queen. Be sure to stop by to learn more and support our local economy!
Each week the market has two spaces reserved for area non-profit groups. Each group may use this space to raise awareness for their organization. If you are a non-profit organization interested in participating in the market, please contact Teri Powers for more information.
