Opening Speaker Announced
|
You Were Never in Chicago...
But you should come this June to hear Neil Steinberg, long-time columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times, kick off the 2012 Annual Meeting. Steinberg's intimate portrait of the city he's called home for three decades, You Were Never in Chicago, will be published by the University of Chicago Press in November. The book's title is lifted from one of the angry responses of Chicagoans to outsider A.J. Liebling's designation of Chicago as the "Second City" in 1952.
Steinberg's talk at the Monday "Taste of Chicago" opening buffet reception is the perfect introduction to this Second, Windy, great American city. Drinks sponsored by Thomson-Shore, Inc.

Program Highlights
|
The Program Committee and session chairs continue to fine-tune the program for AAUP 2012. The latest program update includes a number of schedule revisions, added speakers, and enhanced session descriptions.
New Session: Tuesday, June 19 at 5:00 pm
Open Peer Review: NYU Press/MediaCommons Project Update: Over the past year, NYU Press and the scholarly network MediaCommons have been examining open peer review of scholarly books and articles. The scenarios considered have included fully public online review, collaborative review among a set of readers, and more. A white paper assessing the value and shortcomings of open peer review and serving as a road map for scholars and publishers will be made available for comments in advance of the meeting. Come to this session to discuss the draft findings, as well as ongoing experiments with open peer review and the lessons learned therein. The panel will feature Eric Zinner, Assistant Director and Editor-in-Chief, NYU Press, andCheryl Ball, Associate Professor of English at Illinois State University and editor of Kairos: A Journal of Rhetoric, Technology, and Pedagogy.
Featured Session: Wednesday, June 20, 3:30PM
Friendly Budget Basics for Non-Financial Managers: Individuals seeking career advancement need to know how to build and manage budgets, yet the topic sends fear into the hearts of many humanists. If you can quote Chaucer, but are scared of debits and credits, this session is for you. Through an interactive session with the audience, panelists and participants will build a basic budget. Attendees will leave with tips for tracking the budget against expenses throughout the year, along with guidance on how to cope with the unexpected. The session will be run by Sandy Adams, Director of Operations and Fulfillment, National Academies Press, and Rachel Levy, Business Manager, National Academies Press.

Recommended Reading: Copyright Keynote
|
In March, Copyright Register Maria Pallante delivered a keynote address at the AAP annual meeting, "Copyright & Content: Ownership and Access in a Knowledge Economy." Her timely talk is "one of the best pieces on the nature and purpose of copyright I've ever read," says Peter Givler, AAUP Executive Director. We urge attendees to read it in advance of AAUP 2012.
