Is Your Job Fun?
By: Randy Papanek

Everyone knows the importance of having balance in your life to achieve happiness. But how about balance at work? So many variables go into having a career that you truly love and are passionate about. Just because you are making a huge salary doesn't necessarily mean you're happy at work. Nor does being chalenged with your tasks or having that window desk overlooking the cityscape. It's really a combination of everything.  Most importantly, you must have fun at your job!  Without fun, your career will slowly drag you down and eventually manifest your unhappiness in your professional and personal life. If you're having fun and enjoy what you do, you will perform better and are more likely to achieve success because you will pour your heart and soul into everything you are faced with.

Recently, one of my candidates interviewed for a position with a solid, recession proof company. Afterward she called to tell me how it went. I quickly ran down the usual Q and A's that accompany every traditional interview with one exception, when they asked her if she had any questions, her response was "is working here fun?"  The panel instantly froze with perplexed faces. It was evident that they were thinking "What does that have to do with anything?"  This candidate obviously has balance in her work, and in her way, was asking if balance was important to them. Too often we want that job so badly that we forget to ask perhaps the most important question when looking for your new place of employment......"Is it fun?"

 Turn Over a New Leaf

Does this sound familiar?  Full time job, children, soccer games, community work, housecleaning, yard work, errands, the phone rings but you let it go because you have way too much to do and not enough time to chat.  Figuring out how to balance your career and the rest our life is an all too familiar quest for most of us.  Job seekers take note: for now, your full time job is to look for a career so this applies to you as well.  How many times have you said "I really will make time to do that" or "I really will plan that trip I have been thinking about for so long" But you don't.  You let work take precedence over everything else. In a nutshell, you do not have balance in your life.

It wasn't long ago that I was riding in a full elevator at work, and the elevator stopped on its way up to pick up yet another workaholic. When he stepped into the elevator, the doors shut and someone turned and said "how are you, John"?  He replied "fine and you"?  There was the typical banter for another minute or so when the elevator stopped to let John off.  He took several steps and collapsed.  I did have an awakening moment when I found out that John had suffered from exhaustion and his body was telling him to slow down.  Most people don't balance their checkbook let alone their daily lives.   Work is important, and aspiring to be successful is good.  Working into the wee hours of the night on a daily basis, we lose sight of what is most important, a healthy balance between work and everything else.  Learning how to create balance is hard, but possible.

·      Don't work through lunch every day- Take that time to leave your work area and disengage.  You will be surprised that such a short break can make you more productive than if you didn't take one at all.
·      Set a goal to leave work at a certain time and when the clock strikes, pack up and go home- Work will always be there, but life is way too short to live to work and not live to balance.
·      Plan your day so that you have time for what is most important: You, family and everything the old you couldn't accomplish- Balance is the key to a more productive life, and more, working smart.

So stop sleeping with your blackberry and you will find that slowly, you will find balance in your life and maybe even land that promotion you worked so hard to get.
