Do you want to know a way to get your resume not only looked at, but read? Simply, you should have an all encompassing "master resume" that you use as a foundation to pull applicable and appropriate information for each individual targeted job opening.

Your master resume could be 8 pages or longer depending on the depth of your career and years of experience.  It lists everything you have ever done professionally right down to that internship you had in college. This is your personal journal of all your accomplishments, projects, affiliations, education, certifications, core competencies, and career highlights. This is your life's work documented in resume format. But it is NOT what you want to use as a blanket submittal for every position you would like to apply for.

Many seasoned professionals have varied areas of employment expertise.  This is when you use your "master resume" to write your abbreviated, fine tuned, job specific resume(s).   You will tailor your resume(s) for the specific position you are trying to attain by presenting only applicable, relevant information from your master resume. In order to do this, key areas of your resume must be re-formatted for each position you are submitting yourself for, this way your resume has direction and reads more position-oriented.

Obviously, this technique doesn't apply to everyone. However, if you are of "C" level or just have a plethora of tools in your tool belt, you may want to give this a whirl. Instead of looking like a "jack of all trades", you will look more focused and refined in the area that the employer is looking for. It is really just another creative way of putting your best foot forward and presenting yourself in the best possible light to the people who matter most- your future employer.
