Weighing in the Benefits
In the many years I have working in the Professional Services and Staffing Industry, I have found all too often, that too much emphasis is placed on the salary that a company is offering. When interviewing potential candidates for placement, I always inquire about what is important to the individual in their next career and what are they looking for from their future employer. The answer varies, though the majority of job seekers place too much of their decision on the base salary offered. I agree that you need enough dollars to pay your bills, put food on the table and sleep at night without tossing and turning about how you will pay the electric bill. But what about benefits? When did benefits become so secondary? Benefits that a potential employer offers their employees can add up to $20k and more in income to your base salary. Many employers make it a point to offer better and more interesting perks than others in order to draw the best talent, and it works. When looking for your ideal career, talk with companies about their benefits. You may find yourself accepting a lower base salary to make more money in the long term. Maybe you didn't finish college, have always wished you had, but you didn't have the means to do it. A benefit such as tuition reimbursement could not only bring you a new exciting career, but also provide you with the means to fulfill your dream of going back to school. Some companies even offer tuition reimbursement for you AND your family. It is not uncommon for employers to pay for additional certifications and coursework. Health insurance costs continue to rise. If your potential employer offers you any health insurance plan, thank them graciously as this is no longer a given in today's market. Additionally, life insurance, 401k plans and group dental are all wonderful benefits that add up to a good sum of money on top of your base salary. Other perks that companies are offering include telecommuting, on-site childcare and more. These types of specialty benefits encourage employee morale and retention. Benefits equal dollars and do add up. Don't walk away from an offer that you like because the salary isn't your ideal. Look deeper and you may find that after adding up the value of the benefits, you may just have landed your ideal career and ideal income. |

Recruiters Corner The Truth About Your Resume
By: Randy Papanek
Here's the truth about your resume: NOBODY REALLY WANTS TO READ IT! Let's face it, a resume is the most boring and tedious thing to read. It's about someone you don't know and may never meet, It's dry, work related, is pumped full of boring statistical information and irrelevancies, is hard on the eyes, confusing to figure out and wears you out just to look at it. Ok, the last part may be a little exaggerated, but you get my point. So how can this be avoided? How can you're resume NOT make Hiring Managers take an early lunch due to an acute case of resume screening avoidance?
Simply put, you must make your resume as painless as possible for others to read:
1. Make your resume SCREAM your primary skills! Don't make the Hiring Manager try and figure out exactly what it is you do. They don't like that game.
2. Make your resume flow consistently down the page and continue onto the next in a smooth consistent format! Don't make it a point to use every formatting tool that MS word has to offer, it's confusing and frustrating for the reader.
3. Most important, make your resume as quick and to the point as possible! You will be praided by all if you cut to the chase and leave out any fluff, fillers, or irrelevant information.
Trust me, following these few steps will help your resume stand out from all the others.

Business Watch... Do Your Homework Before You Network
By: Robert Diaz
Before meeting with a prospective client, it is paramount to do your homework. Homework is not just perusing a website and educating yourself on the client company through information that is provided for the general public to read. Of course reading the website is key, but in order to provide a solution to a client, you must know what solutions your client is looking for from vendors or suppliers. As simplistic as it sounds, more often than not, we overlook what the client needs and focus on what we want to provide them. Some time ago, I was at a large networking conference. As I was making my way toward the booth of a company I know, I overheard a supplier give his pitch to a "C" level executive of a global publicly traded company. This supplier introduced himself, shook the gentleman's hand, and asked "What are you looking for and how may I service you?" The prospective client looked at the supplier, was silent for a short time, and responded "I suggest you go back to your office, read up on my company, educate yourself on what our needs are, and once you have done your homework, I would like for you to tell me what solutions you can provide me". I am almost certain that this particular business development representative will never make the same mistake again. I continued to walk toward the booth and smiled to myself as I vowed to not only do my homework, but REALLY know my prospective clients prior to broaching the subject of doing business together. Your clients develop an immediate respect for you for doing your due diligence and you may just turn that prospective client into an active one.
