PRESIDENT'S COLUMN By Bruce Rydeen, Cerron

Fall Chamber update
Fall is an exciting part of the year for the Chamber. Of course there are many networking events to participate in. Be sure to sign up for the Fall Gala, a grand event, and a key event for your Chamber.
In November your Board conducts its annual planning retreat. At this planning event the direction for next year is determined. The Board welcomes any ideas or suggestions you may have for improving our Chamber.
The City of Lakeville is also quite busy with determining the budget and levy for next year. There will be several opportunities to learn more about the budget and provide input and the chamber has previously sent an email with the various events and dates. I encourage you to become involved in the discussion and process.
Thank you for your continued support of out Chamber.
Bruce Rydeen 2012 Chamber President

BUSINESS EDUCATION By Malinda Mehrhoff, Dakota Electric
The Business & Education Committee of the Lakeville Chamber was formed in 1993 to 'develop links between the Chamber and the school district in order to jointly accomplish common goals', according to committee documentation from that time.
Today, the Business & Education Committee continues to work closely with the Lakeville school district, partnering with them on various projects throughout the year. One of the biggest undertakings for this committee is the annual Career Jamboree on November 7th from 2:30 - 5:00 p.m. at Lakeville North High School. The committee will arrange to have representatives from at least 70 different careers at the jamboree. Juniors from both high schools will attend the event as a graduation requirement. They will meet with representatives choosing two different careers that they are interested in. The students will gather information on education requirements, specific skills needed, and job responsibilities that will be beneficial for them when making decisions about their post-secondary education and other career exploration.
Some other projects that the committee partners with the school district throughout the year are: College Financial Planning night in January, Senior Interviews, Stock Market Game, Challenge to Change/Promise Week, and teacher appreciation breakfasts.
This partnership between the school district and the chamber is rather unique but has stood the test of time over the past 18 years as projects have evolved but the commitment from the committee members has not waned. Each of the 22 current committee members who volunteer their time, have a personal and/or professional connection to the work being done and a desire to help today's youth prepare to become our future employees and stewards of our community. If you have questions about the committee, email Malinda Mehrhoff, committee chair or call 651-463-6255.
Thanks to Dakota Electric for Malinda Mehrhoff's contributions to the Chamber newsletter!

Project Updates
The City of Lakeville and its consultant Arnett Muldrow and Associates are making progress on the goal of formulating a Business Marketing Strategy. This initiative is a result of the Economic Development Commission's (EDC) 2011-2013 Strategic Plan for Economic Development. This team conducted business interviews and focus groups for developing draft marketing and promotional materials. They will be aggregating this information and working with the steering committee over the next couple of months to fully develop Lakeville's Business Marketing Strategy to help the City attract and retain a growing diversity of businesses in the community. The Strategy is expected to be completed by the end of the year with implementation in 2012. Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) has signed a 7-year lease for 163,000 square feet in the First Park spec building located at 9150 217th Street. The company plans to open a warehouse and maintenance facility for U.S. Postal Service equipment. CSC is a Falls Church, Virginia based federal contractor and was recently awarded a $25.8 million contract to operate a Minneapolis mail transport equipment service center. The company is currently completing leasehold improvements to the building. Superior Access Solutions (SAS) has purchased an 11,200 square foot building in the Airlake Industrial Park. They recently relocated from 3,300 square feet in Burnsville and will be utilizing over 10,000 square feet of the space here in Lakeville. SAS is a communications systems integration company that provides solutions for government, broadcast, and telecommunications industries. The groundbreaking for the Fountains at Hosanna! took place on August 28. The Fountains will be a 93-unit senior living community constructed west of and connected to the existing Hosanna! Church located at 9600 163rd Street. The project will contain 20 independent living units, 47 assisted living units, 24 memory care units, and two guest suites. The facility is being developed by Hosanna! Heartland and the Ebenezer Society and will be managed by Ebenezer Management Services and is expected to be completed by the fall of 2012. Walmart is now under construction with their new store on Keokuk Avenue near the intersection of County Road 70 and I-35. The 152,000 square foot project is expected to take approximately 12 months to complete which would result in the store opening sometime in the third quarter of 2012. Building Permit UpdateThe City issued building permits with a total valuation of $53,887,883 through September. This compares to a total valuation of $41,549,020 through September of 2010. The City issued commercial and industrial permits with a total valuation of $8,846,000 through September compared to a total valuation of $2,930,000 through September of 2010. The City has also issued permits for 94 single family homes through September with a total valuation of $29,281,000.
