PUBLIC POLICY COMMITTEE By Bob Vogel, New Market Bank

Bob Vogel
The Chamber's Pubic Policy Committee (previously Government Affairs Committee) met in July and had extensive discussion about the 2011 goals, as well as what input could be provided to the chamber board for the 2012 plan.

One thing that became apparent during our discussion was the belief that the committee has made significant progress over the past few years in providing perspective and input for the business community's needs.   The input was made possible by the commitment of time and effort by committee members to study issues, and the cooperation of the local government units (city and school) to provide information that assisted in their work.  We found that although sometimes there may be opposing views on how to approach difficult decisions, the interaction and discussion proved valuable for everyone affected by public policy decisions.

To keep building the communication and influence the chamber has with our local governments (not only the city and school, but also the county and watershed districts) there is a need for more members who are willing to commit their talents and time to the Chamber.  So, if you have an interest in building the relationship the Chamber has with your local government entities, please contact the office and let them know you will help.

Remember, it's often easy to second guess or complain about "what government does to business".  So get involved as your Chamber gives you a voice to help shape outcomes that are good for the community.
