FROM THE EXEC'S DESK By Todd Bornhauser
The Lakeville Area Chamber has been a long-time advocate for the creation of a Lakeville Finance Committee. This was a recent victory for the Chamber, as applications for this committee are currently being sought by the City of Lakeville.
The purpose of the Finance Committee is to function as a resource to the City Council and staff in an advisory capacity regarding fiscal matters relating to short-term and long-term financial planning; financial policies and practices; local, state, and national trends in finance and the economy; analysis of legislative issues; review of quarterly financial reports and the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report; and to provide recommendations regarding public communications and education programs related to budget and City finances. For more information, please contact the City Clerk at (952) 985-4404. |

The Ambassadors welcome Peggy Rice with Definitive Accounting as the newest member of our team.
Our committee meetings are moving back to Tuesdays beginning in June as Linda Rynda completes her Leadership Lakeville training.
Did you know that we are one of the few chambers that feature Ambassadors on their website? What a great benefit! Pictures are being taken of our newest Ambassadors to update the Chamber website.
If you are interested in becoming an Ambassador please give Linda a call at the Chamber office. |
GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS By Bob Vogel, New Market Bank
One of the committee's goals is to keep good lines of communication open between the business community and the city and school leadership. To accomplish this the chamber hosts a monthly breakfast with the city and school on alternating 2nd Tuesday's (city even number months, school odd number months). All chamber members are invited to attend these informal discussions to keep abreast of local issues and initiatives, so please plan to attend if you can. At our May meeting the committee had a lengthy discussion about economic growth and development. They noted the city is hosting a developer forum on June 15, as well as building a marketing plan (through the Economic Development Commission) to help promote Lakeville's activities in the marketplace. The committee also discussed rules they believe may be inhibiting development. One of these is the policy on securities and escrow requirements for existing business and new development projects. Because the committee felt updating the policy might help to encourage business expansion in Lakeville they requested the board to pass and forward a resolution to the city requesting a study of the current policies to ensure they are consistent with encouraging a strong business environment. The school district has put in place a search process for a new superintendent, as well as having discussion on compensation packages. |
BUSINESS & EDUCATION by: Malinda Mehrhoff, Dakota Electric
As the Business & Education Committee wraps up its annual meeting schedule this month, we can reflect on what we've accomplished the past 12 months! We were able to: - Sponsor 5 students from each high school to attend the Business Venture Camp in the summer.
- Welcome the new teachers to the district last August with a gift bag full of items donated from chamber businesses.
- Organize a career jamboree under the leadership of Brian Knapp, representing about 70 careers that allowed the juniors from both high schools to gather information about careers they are interested in.
- Under the leadership of Steve Lorenz, organize the Financial Aid Night which is an informational meeting for parents regarding college financial planning.
- Also results from Steve Lorenz efforts, he volunteers and finds volunteers to mentor and speak with students in their Economics classes while participating in the Stock Market Game.
- Committee and chamber members assisted with senior interviews at Lakeville South throughout the school year.
- Our committee brought in breakfast and expressed our appreciation for the teachers and staff at nine elementary schools, both high schools as well as the community education building, family learning center and the alternative learning center.
- Our final event for the year was in May when we and other volunteers from the chamber bring ice cream treats to both high schools for PROMise week and Challenge to Change week reminding students to make good choices and to be safe during prom weekend.
The Business & Education Committee is built upon a desire to partner businesses and education to make our community stronger. As budgets get tighter for everyone, the needs increase and the resources decrease making it more challenging for our committee for the upcoming year. Thanks to the creative business people on our committee who will rise to the challenge!

MINNESOTA CHAMBER NEWS
By David C. Olson, President Minnesota Chamber
A CALL FOR COMPREHENSIVE FEDERAL IMMIGRATION REFORM
The federal government is failing Minnesota by not adopting comprehensive federal immigration reform. The resounding message was delivered at a series of forums conducted earlier this year by the Business Immigration Council, of which the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce is a leading member.
Immigrants contribute broadly to Minnesota from their role in the social fabric of our communities to being a source of new business starts. Especially important, immigrants are a vital ingredient in the workforce today and in the future. Yet their potential is not being fully realized due primarily to the lack of comprehensive federal immigration reform.
Frustrated by federal inaction, many state and local governments have become involved. The result, unfortunately, is a patchwork of proposals, making a national system almost impossible. Employers increasingly report that they spend inordinate time and resources recruiting and determining if immigrants are authorized to work in this country.
Seven forums were conducted and made possible, in part, by the Minnesota Funders Collaborative, which is comprised of the Minneapolis Foundation and other organizations. The audiences were a blend of local business owners, teachers, religious leaders, labor leaders, farmers and government representatives.
Though they represented diverse backgrounds, participants were aligned that comprehensive reform must include four things:
· A means of resolving the status of anyone who is in the country, but not authorized.
· A more accurate and efficient means of checking the immigration status of potential employees.
· A plan for adjusting the flow of immigrants to our rate of economic growth.
· Provisions to make sure our borders are secure.
The Business Immigration Council pledges to bring these concerns to the attention of federal policy-makers. Among our goals, we seek to ensure that: Unauthorized immigrants can become documented; immigrants waiting to work can be brought in; verification of workers is affordable and accessible; plans for future immigration can expand and contract with the needs of the business and immigrant communities.
Minnesotans are clearly frustrated with what they view as a broken immigration system. The problems are well documented, and now we must convince our federal lawmakers to take action on comprehensive reform. I've personally delivered the message to Minnesota's congressional delegation. Local chamber of commerce representatives reinforced the concerns during their annual trip this month to Washington, D.C.
Immigrant workers can help fill our worker shortage if we have a federal immigration system that works. Reform, to be successful, must modify existing policies without creating more obstacles for workers to connect with employers.
