PRESIDENTS CORNER By Bruce Rydeen, Cerron Commercial Properties

During 2011 the board is continuing to develop a strategic plan for this year and beyond. I am a firm believer that a solid plan is the foundation of any organization.
Our ambitious plan focuses on 5 areas: membership, economic development, advocacy, tourism, and how to be a model chamber. Goals include: 87% retention of our membership, recruit 65 new members and grow our economic development initiatives.
Another priority is sharpening the focus on our planning processes. We need to do fewer things, but do them better, more efficiently, less costly, and utilize our members/staff talents wisely. This is hard to do...by nature we are great at adding projects, but not very good at eliminating ones that have served their usefulness, lost money, or do not fit our mission. With tougher economic times comes more scrutiny - it is human nature and good business sense.
The Chamber plays an important role by being the voice of business for its members. There will be significant challenges in the future; therefore we put together an economic development initiative. The thrust of this initiative will be to build a stronger economic environment, promote and facilitate business success, and attract businesses to our great community.
Your talents are needed. I challenge you to embrace our vision and support your chamber by becoming involved. Please help our valued and dedicated staff and Board of Directors continue to make this chamber a stronger organization - the model chamber!

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS By Bob Vogel, New Market Bank

The Public Policy Committee has arranged our agenda to address the committee's 2011 four "Priority Issues" (EDC, City/School Budget, Residential Development, Communication - Public Voice). At the March meeting the committee adopted two resolutions relative to the Priority Issues, and forwarded them to the board for approval.
The first is to encourage the city council to organize a "community budget advisory committee", which would be similar in nature to what the school now has in place. The committee felt that providing input to the decision makers from a balanced cross section of the community would be a good way to gather valuable information to help in addressing the opportunities and challenges we all face.
It also discussed and advanced an idea that was successful in the past. During the 1990's the city twice embarked on a community wide visioning exercise (Strategic Growth Task Force) that helped paint the picture of what Lakeville is today. The effort was recognized regionally as a broad based, community wide way of involving the residential and business community to describe what it optimally might look like for decades to come. To support that effort the committee adopted a resolution suggesting a like approach to again look into the future and help "paint the picture".
The committee meets monthly at the Chamber office. Please remember the committee is only as good as the members make it, so if you have an interest in participating please call the chamber office and get information on how to become involved.

AMBASSADORS By Kathi Koehler, New Market Bank
The Ambassadors are ready for another busy month of Chamber events. We have a great group of dedicated people who enjoy meeting Chamber members and helping them get the most out of their membership.
Kathi Lindau has been keeping us on track by letting us know when and where we need to be with the help of "Meeting Wizard". Murray Wilson and Sue McFarlane oversee the monthly calls to new and existing members. Brian Peterson and I work on making sure we all have fun in the process.
