EXCITING NEW YEAR PREDICTION

Like the Farmers Almanac prediction for more snow this winter  than we've had in years, 'Todd Almanac' predicts more FUN in 2011 than the Chamber has had in a long time.  Our board met on November 16 for a strategic planning session that resulted in setting new values and goals for our progressive organization including incorporating more fun!

Our mission statement was revised and can be viewed in the box above this article.   A vision statement, values, and goals were developed and I'd like to share this information with you.

VISION:  The Lakeville Area Chamber of Commerce will be considered THE resource for the needs of the business community.

VALUES
:  Fun ● Leadership ● Integrity ● Collaborative ● Member Focus ● Volunteerism

GOALS:
Membership ● Economic Development ● Advocacy ● Model Chamber ● Tourism

MEMBERSHIP:  Strong membership base with outstanding programs and marketing opportunities for members.  This will be accomplished with a coordinated and trackable membership retention program, an aggressive membership recruitment strategy, diverse networking events, a plethora of marketing opportunities, a wide range of educational events, numerous forms of member communications, and a increased emphasis on volunteerism and recognition.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: Assist in maintaining a strong economic environment and expand local business opportunities by participating in the Grow Minnesota program, improved website communications, stronger partnership with the EDC, and coordinated efforts with the Public Policy committee.

ADVOCACY:  Influence and shape public policy to reflect business priorities while enhancing the climate for our member's growth, by monitoring and educating members and the community on business related issues, utilizing the resources of the Minnesota and US Chamber, and facilitating candidate forums.

MODEL CHAMBER:  Strive to be recognized as the premier business resource center.  This will be accomplished through achievement of financial goals, strategic planning, development of a quality staff, use of past Chamber leadership, strategic use of the Foundation, and expanded administrative and procedure controls.

TOURISM:  Maximize the viability of the Lakeville area as a travel destination by supporting the efforts of the Lakeville Convention & Visitors Bureau while ensuring its financial and operational strength.

AMBASSADORS By Kathy Koehler, New Market Bank

Kathy Koehler
The Ambassadors would like to congratulate our Ambassador of the Year, Sharon Buechner with Minnesota Sun Newspapers.  Sharon has been a great source of leads for the Chamber and does a great job of promoting everything the Chamber has to offer.

We would also like to extend a huge thank-you to Bob Curtis for his excellent leadership as the Ambassador chair over the past two years.  Bob has been "promoted" to the Chamber board and acts as our board liaison so we still get to enjoy his company at our monthly meetings.  Great job, Bob!

The Ambassadors will be working hard this year to assist the Chamber in meeting its 2011 goals.   We want to help members get the most out of their Chamber  investment so   we will provide the Chamber with lots of feedback by making calls to new and existing members.  And we like to make new members feel welcome in the friendly atmosphere that you will find at all of our Chamber events.  Look for us at up-coming events - we are the ones with the gold name tags!

BUSINESS & EDUCATION by:  Malinda Mehrhoff, Dakota Electric

Mahlinda M
Recently I was reviewing old documents from the beginning days of the Business & Education Committee and it appears this committee has been a part of the Lakeville Chamber since about 1993.

An interesting excerpt from one document is worth sharing with you: "Businesses have always had a vested interest in education.  Our interests have included expanding our own horizons, to providing quality workers, to shaping our children.  Lately, however, the educational system has been under increasing burdens.  These include, among others, reduced funding and increased drug abuse and violence.  The results are apparent in our businesses.  Finding workers with even the most basic of skills has become difficult.  ...The primary purpose of the group is to help combat problems in our educational system by providing support when needed."

In reference to the above, it seems to me that this hasn't changed much in the past 18 years.  What has changed over the years is the types and amount of involvement between the businesses and the schools.  The Business & Education Committee is an example of a true partnership where representatives from both education and business have a mutual interest and desire to prepare students for their future careers to the best of our abilities.

Anyone interested in more information about this committee or would like to get involved, please contact:
Malinda Mehrhoff, Chair at 651-463-6255 or mmehrhoff@dakotaelectric.com.

MINNESOTA CHAMBER NEWS

By David C. Olson, President Minnesota Chamber

SPOTLIGHT ON GOVERNMENT REDESIGN

Minnesotans face mutual challenges as we climb out of a recession that has taken a toll on both the private and public sectors. Conducting business as usual just doesn't cut it. Business and government alike must explore all measures and take bold action to deliver quality products and services to our customers at lower cost.

In that pursuit, the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce and its local partners are engaging business leaders and citizens to redesign government services. We're grateful to the Bush Foundation that contributed money to this effort. The findings, to date, of these five studies were reported at the annual meeting of the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce Executives (MCCE) There is reason for optimism.

Chambers of commerce at Brainerd Lakes, Staples Motley Area and Long Prairie Area are working with Crow Wing and Todd counties to study the case management for individuals who access a variety of county departments; the goal is to streamline the process and make these people less reliant on public services. The Owatonna Area Chamber is working with its city to use the LEAN process to evaluate operations; the first department being reviewed is parks and recreation.

Rochester Area Chamber is working with its city to develop a more customer-focused approach for review and approval of various development requirements. The Austin Area Chamber studied public safety dispatch with the city of Austin and Mower County. And a group of Twin Cities chambers is working with the Metropolitan Council to identify efficiencies in transit operations.

Some of these projects are still in progress, and others have issued final recommendations. Among the common themes that have emerged:
-Improving service to customers should be at the forefront of any effort to consolidate and/or streamline operations.
-Don't expect an immediate return on the bottom line; real savings are long term.
-Enacting change requires engaging ideas that focus on the outcomes. Do not pander to the vested interests of stakeholders; there can be no sacred cows.
-The private sector must demand change and be ready to jump in with its resources.

Hardly a week passes that headlines don't announce another initiative on government collaboration. Otter Tail County's director of solid waste also oversees programs in Wadena and Todd counties. Austin and Albert Lea are exploring sharing the services of a finance director. Rice County officials are charting a course to change the way the county does business. And Rep. Paul Marquart, DFL-Dilworth, said he would first consider redesign to ease the state's expected budget deficit. He suggested that some agencies, like law enforcement, don't need to be restricted by county boundaries.

Changing demographics are driving the delivery of government services. An aging population is demanding more public services, especially in health care. At the same time, a shrinking workforce is contributing fewer tax dollars to support these services. And the reality of a world economy means services must be delivered at the same or lower per-unit price.

We also recognize that many local governments - no matter how well intentioned - are hamstrung in efforts to change operations. Myriad state mandates hinder their flexibility and ability to carve new paths. That's why chambers of commerce are working with local governments and legislators to review and eliminate the costliest and most cumbersome of mandates.

The Minnesota Chamber believes the state budget can be balanced by using the revenues we know will be available for the next biennium. Budget reform and service redesign must be part of the final puzzle. We stand ready to assist policy-makers at all levels of government to identify the most pressing problems and then fund those programs that deliver the greatest value and best outcomes.
